What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use locate for a fast, approximate filename lookup when its database is current enough. Use find when you need a live search of a particular directory tree, filters such as size, or an operation on the matching paths. The choice is indexed lookup versus real-time traversal, not simply “fast command versus slow command.”
Both commands answer “where is this file?” but they inspect different sources. GNU describes find as searching a directory hierarchy and locate as scanning one or more filename databases for matching patterns. That distinction determines whether a result is current, what you can filter, and whether the command can safely feed a file operation. The official GNU Findutils project documentation is at https://www.gnu.org/software/findutils/.

The short decision
| Situation | Use | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| You remember part of a filename and need likely paths quickly | locate |
It searches a prebuilt filename index instead of walking directories at query time. |
| You need results from a specific directory or mounted tree | find |
You provide the exact starting path and search that hierarchy live. |
| You need conditions such as filename plus size | find |
Its expression can combine name and other attributes. |
| You need to print, inspect, or act on selected paths | find |
Actions can be attached to the matching expression. |
| A file may have been created, moved, or deleted since the last index update | find |
Its traversal reflects the selected hierarchy when you run it, subject to access and traversal limits. |
| You are unsure whether the local locate database covers the directory | find |
Database scope and refresh policy are system-specific. |
How the two commands search
find: a live traversal of a hierarchy
A find command starts with one or more paths, walks the directory hierarchy below those paths, evaluates an expression for each encountered entry, and reports entries that satisfy it. If you start at /home/alex, the search is limited to that subtree; if you start at /, the potential tree is much larger. The command therefore gives you control over both coverage and selection.
Because the traversal happens when the command runs, a file that exists in the selected tree can be considered immediately. That does not override ordinary filesystem realities: inaccessible directories, permission restrictions, mounts that are not part of the chosen path, and changes made while the traversal is in progress can affect what is reported.

locate: a query against filename databases
locate scans one or more databases containing stored pathnames and displays matching entries. It does not normally inspect every directory at query time. That is why a lookup can feel immediate even on a large filesystem, but also why the answer is limited to what the database knows.
The database is built by updatedb. An administrator or distribution configuration decides which directories are included and how often the database is refreshed. There is no universal Linux guarantee that every machine updates it nightly, indexes every mounted filesystem, or uses the same database path. Check the local implementation and system configuration when coverage matters.
When locate is the better first command
Quick discovery by name
If your task is “I know or partly remember the filename; show me possible locations,” an indexed lookup is usually the most convenient starting point. For example:
locate 'report.pdf'
The command returns pathnames whose stored text matches the query according to the installed locate implementation. It is useful for finding documentation, old project files, or a configuration file whose directory you have forgotten, provided the relevant database exists and is sufficiently fresh.
Large trees where precision is not yet necessary
Searching a broad area with find can require a traversal of many directories. A locate query can narrow the candidates before you decide whether a live check is needed. This is a discovery workflow, not proof that every displayed path still exists.

Situations where an approximate answer is acceptable
Locate is appropriate when a stale result is harmless—for example, when you are trying to remember an old path or identify a likely project directory. Treat each result as a candidate if the file could have changed since indexing.
When find is the right tool
You need current state
Use find when a newly created file must be visible, when a removed path must no longer be selected, or when files may have moved after the last database update. Choose the narrowest reliable starting path:
find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print
This searches the /home/alex hierarchy at run time and prints matching PDF names. The quotes are significant: they prevent the interactive shell from expanding *.pdf before find receives the pattern.
You need attributes beyond the name
A filename database stores pathnames, not a complete live inventory of every file attribute. find expressions can combine a name test with conditions such as size. GNU’s documented example is:
find /usr/src -name '*.c' -size +100k -print
Here the command limits the search to /usr/src, requires a pathname matching the quoted C-source pattern, applies a size condition, and prints the matches. Add conditions only when they express a real requirement; each extra test makes the selection more specific.

You intend to act on the matches
find is designed for expressions that can report or process matching paths. A cautious workflow is to run a print-only command first, inspect the output, and only then attach an action. This matters for commands that modify, move, or delete files: an unexpectedly broad starting path or expression can select more than intended.
A reliable locate workflow
- Define how accurate the answer must be. If the file may be newer than the local index, plan to confirm the result with
findor another live filesystem check. - Query a distinctive name. Quote the argument so spaces and shell metacharacters reach
locateas one query. - Read the paths as candidates. A path can be present in the database even if it has since been renamed or removed.
- Confirm before using a result operationally. For a script, backup, deployment, or deletion, verify that the path exists and is the intended one.
- Investigate missing results. Check whether the database was updated after the file was created and whether the directory is included in the index.
For a simple filename lookup, the command itself remains small:
locate 'report.pdf'
If it returns nothing, that is evidence only about the database searched. It does not establish that no such file exists anywhere on the machine.
A reliable find workflow
- Choose the search root. Start with a directory you intend to inspect, such as
/home/alexor/usr/src, rather than an unnecessarily broad root. - Write the filename pattern and quote it. Use
'*.pdf', not an unquoted wildcard, so the shell does not substitute names from the current working directory. - Add one requirement at a time. Begin with
-name, then add an attribute test such as-sizewhen needed. - Print and inspect. Use
-printduring selection design so you can see exactly which paths match. - Only then add an action. Keep the root and expression narrow when the next operation changes files.
A basic name search is:
find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print
A name-and-size search is:
find /usr/src -name '*.c' -size +100k -print
The second command demonstrates why find is the flexible choice: the live traversal and expression evaluate more than a stored pathname pattern.
Freshness, coverage, and permissions
| Question | find |
locate |
|---|---|---|
| Does it see a file created moments ago? | It can, if the file is in the selected tree and traversal can reach it. | Only if the database has already been refreshed and includes that location. |
| What happens after a rename or deletion? | The next traversal evaluates the current hierarchy it can access. | Old paths can remain until the database is refreshed. |
| Does it search the entire machine? | Only the roots you supply, such as a specific home directory or the filesystem root. | Only directories represented in the databases being queried. |
| Can permissions affect results? | Yes. The process must be able to traverse directories and inspect entries. | The database may contain a pathname regardless of whether your current process can open it; verify access before relying on it. |
| Is the refresh schedule universal? | Not applicable: the search runs when invoked. | No. It depends on how updatedb is configured on that system. |
These differences explain the common “locate did not find my new file” report. The file may simply have appeared after the last database update, or its directory may be excluded from the database. A live find search of the known parent directory is the appropriate check.

Why quoting matters in find commands
In an interactive shell, an unquoted wildcard can be expanded by the shell before find starts. That changes the arguments and can produce an error or an unintended search. Keep wildcard patterns in single or double quotes:
find /usr/src -name '*.c' -print
The quotes are removed by the shell, while the literal pattern is passed to find for its own matching. This is especially important in a directory that already contains files matching the wildcard, because the command may otherwise receive a list of filenames instead of one pattern.
Common failure modes and fixes
“locate returns nothing, but I know the file exists”
- Run
findfrom the file’s known parent directory to perform a live check. - Consider when the file was created or renamed relative to the last database update.
- Check whether the relevant filesystem or directory is included in the local locate configuration.
- Remember that different systems can install different locate implementations and database arrangements.
“locate shows a path that no longer exists”
That is a stale index entry. Confirm the path with a live check before opening it, copying it, or passing it to another command.
“find found too much”
- Use a narrower starting path instead of searching a broad hierarchy.
- Make the filename pattern more distinctive.
- Add a requirement such as the documented size condition when size is part of the task.
- Print the result set before attaching any modifying action.
“My pattern behaves strangely”
Inspect the command for an unquoted wildcard. In find /home/alex -name '*.pdf' -print, quoting ensures that find, rather than the shell, receives and evaluates the pattern.

“The search misses a directory I expected”
For find, verify that the directory lies below the starting path and that traversal is permitted. For locate, verify that the directory is covered by the database and that the database has been refreshed since the relevant file change.
Best Value
Choosing by task rather than habit
| Your actual question | Recommended first step | Follow-up |
|---|---|---|
“Where might report.pdf be?” |
locate 'report.pdf' |
Confirm the chosen path if it matters. |
| “Which PDFs are under this project directory right now?” | find /path/to/project -name '*.pdf' -print |
Review the printed list. |
“Which C files under /usr/src exceed the stated size threshold?” |
find /usr/src -name '*.c' -size +100k -print |
Use the output for the next controlled step. |
| “Can I safely run an operation on the matches?” | find with a print-only expression |
Inspect the complete selection, then add the action. |
| “Does this file exist even though locate cannot see it?” | find from the known parent directory |
Check permissions and the exact name. |
Speed without misleading promises
Locate can be “very fast” when the file was present during the most recent filename-database update because the query reads an index rather than traversing the selected hierarchy. That is a qualitative advantage, not a universal speed ratio. The time required by find depends on the size of the tree, the expression, storage performance, and what the process is allowed to traverse. Do not assume one command is always faster in every environment.
A practical two-stage approach often gives the best balance: use locate to generate likely names when an approximate answer is acceptable, then use find for a current, scoped confirmation or for attribute-based selection. If correctness is more important than convenience, skip the index and run the appropriately scoped live search first.
Safety checklist for commands that change files
- Prefer a specific
findroot over an entire filesystem when the task is local. - Keep wildcard patterns quoted.
- Start with
-printand inspect every match. - Do not treat a locate result as proof that a path still exists.
- Do not use a stale or overly broad result set as input to a destructive operation.
- When a locate hit is important, verify it with a live check before acting.
This workflow follows from the commands’ documented search models: an index can be out of date, while a live traversal can still be broader than you intended if its root and expression are not carefully chosen.
