Linux Dual Boot vs. a Virtual Machine: Which Should You Choose?

Use a VM to try Linux or run it beside Windows; choose dual boot when you need native hardware access or a VM’s limits affect your work.

Choose a virtual machine (VM) if you want to learn Linux, test software, or use Linux beside Windows without restarting. Choose dual boot if you expect to use Linux regularly and need direct access to the computer’s hardware, especially for graphics- or device-intensive work. The right choice depends on your workload, available memory and storage, and—if you install alongside Windows—your firmware, disk layout, and encryption.

How the two setups work

Dual boot

Linux and Windows are installed on the same physical computer. At startup, you select which operating system to run; switching between them means restarting. Ubuntu’s installation documentation includes an option to install alongside Windows, but the steps vary by computer and Ubuntu release. See Ubuntu’s desktop installation guide for the release-specific procedure.

Virtual machine

A VM runs Linux as a guest inside a host operating system, such as Windows. You can keep the host open while using the guest, but both systems share the computer’s resources and the host manages access to the hardware. Ubuntu’s Hyper-V instructions, for example, describe attaching an ISO image to the VM’s virtual DVD drive and booting from it: Ubuntu on Hyper-V.

Compare the trade-offs

Consideration Dual boot Virtual machine
Switching between systems Restart and choose the operating system at startup. Run Linux alongside the host and switch between them without rebooting.
Hardware access Linux runs directly on the physical computer after startup. The host manages hardware resources; access to particular devices depends on the virtualization software and its passthrough support.
Performance-sensitive work Often the better fit when a workload needs direct hardware access or high-performance graphics. Performance depends on workload and platform. Canonical notes that VirtualBox may have limited disk I/O or CPU-bound performance and does not provide high-performance GPU capability in the configuration it describes; this is not a claim that every VM is slow. Canonical’s virtualization comparison
Experimentation Changes are made to a full installed operating system and its partitions. A convenient guest environment for trying software. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki lists experimentation without risking damaging changes to the host as a typical VM use. Ubuntu Community Help Wiki: VirtualBox
What setup involves Plan for disk space, boot configuration, and careful handling of partitions and encryption. Install virtualization software and allocate enough host resources to run both systems; the guest can be installed from an ISO.

Processor virtualization features can improve VM performance, but do not remove every workload or device limitation. Canonical’s virtualization comparison discusses the role of these features alongside VM trade-offs.

Choose based on what you plan to do

Pick a VM for learning, testing, or occasional Linux use

  • You are new to Linux and want to explore it before changing the computer’s disk setup.
  • You need a Linux desktop or development environment while keeping Windows open.
  • You want to test software in a separate guest environment. A VM is useful for this, but it should not be treated as a perfect security boundary.

Pick dual boot for sustained use or demanding hardware needs

  • You expect to use Linux as a regular working environment and can accept restarting to switch systems.
  • Your work depends on direct graphics or device access, or you have encountered a VM limitation that blocks the workload.

Still undecided?

Trying Linux in a VM first is a practical way to explore it without repartitioning the computer. If a graphics or device limitation later becomes a problem, you can assess dual boot then. Before changing partitions, check your backups, firmware mode, disk layout, encryption status, and the installation instructions for the exact Linux release you plan to use. This is a decision path based on the documented trade-offs, not a guarantee that a VM will meet every need.

Check Windows encryption and disk layout before dual booting

Installation guidance is release- and procedure-specific. Ubuntu’s Desktop 24.04 guide says to disable BitLocker for the alongside-Windows process it describes. Ubuntu’s 26.04 LTS release summary reports improved handling for some BitLocker-protected Windows layouts when enough unallocated space exists, or when a sufficiently large partition can be resized. That improvement is not a universal promise for every encrypted PC or installation. Follow the guide for the Ubuntu release you are installing, and make sure you can access your Windows recovery information before changing partitions.

What the evidence does—and does not—say about speed

There is no supported performance percentage or universal speed ranking for dual boot versus a VM. The available product guidance describes qualitative trade-offs, not a controlled benchmark comparing the two setups. A VM can work well for many tasks, while a workload limited by virtualization, graphics, disk I/O, or device access may be a better fit for native Linux through dual boot.
