A black screen right after you choose a GRUB entry usually means the bootloader did its job and something failed later: the kernel, the graphics driver, a disk-unlock prompt, or a startup service. It does not, by itself, mean the SSD has failed. Work through the steps below in order, and write down what appears on screen at each point before you change firmware settings or storage.
Identify where the screen stops
The exact point of failure decides which branch to follow. Each row below describes a different stage, so match what you see before trying a fix.

| What you see | What it most likely points to | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen before the GRUB menu appears | Firmware boot order or a bootloader that is not being found | Confirm the disk appears in the firmware boot menu, then leave storage alone |
| GRUB menu shows, then black after choosing the normal Linux entry | Kernel or graphics initialization, or a hidden prompt | Recovery mode, then the nomodeset test |
| Freeze with a last message such as “Loading initial ramdisk” | Startup stalled while the kernel was preparing the root filesystem or a disk-unlock step | Make boot messages visible, then test an older kernel |
A grub rescue> prompt |
A bootloader problem, which is a different symptom from a blank screen | See the rescue prompt section below |
An Ask Ubuntu community answer notes that an encrypted installation can sit at a LUKS password prompt that never displays, so the system looks frozen or blank when it is actually waiting for input. Type your passphrase blind and press Enter once before assuming the boot has failed. That observation comes from an older community answer, so treat it as one possibility to rule out, not a general diagnosis.
Try recovery mode while GRUB still responds
If the GRUB menu appears at all, recovery mode is the safest first test because it starts a basic repair environment with a root shell.

- ✅Supported UEFI and Legacy, Compatibility any PC/Laptop, Any boot issue only needs to disable "Secure Boot"
- Restart the machine and show the GRUB menu. Ubuntu’s wiki describes holding Shift on BIOS systems and Escape on UEFI systems. Timing varies, and firmware fast-boot settings can make the menu hard to catch, so press the key repeatedly right after power-on.
- Select Advanced options for Ubuntu.
- Select the entry marked (recovery mode) for the kernel you normally boot.
- In the recovery menu, choose root (Drop to root shell prompt) to get a shell.
- Read the logs before changing anything. The root filesystem is mounted read-only at first. Ubuntu’s wiki documents
mount -o remount,rw /for cases where a repair needs write access; run it only when you know which change you are making.
Recovery mode can also tell you whether the system boots at all with a minimal configuration. If it does, the fault is most likely in graphics setup or a specific service rather than the disk. Ubuntu’s recovery documentation is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Recovery_mode.
Test the nomodeset workaround
The nomodeset parameter tells the kernel not to switch the graphics hardware into a driver-controlled video mode early in boot. It is a temporary diagnostic. It usually runs with reduced graphics capability, so it is a way to see whether the normal graphics path is the problem, not a permanent setup.
- In the GRUB menu, highlight the normal Linux entry for your Ubuntu release.
- Press e to edit it.
- Find the line that begins with
linux. Move to the end of that line and add a space followed bynomodeset. - Press Ctrl+X to boot the edited entry.
If the desktop appears, the graphics driver or its configuration is the likely cause. Do not stay in this mode long-term. Look up the correct driver for your exact GPU and Ubuntu release. The Ask Ubuntu answer that describes this method was last edited in 2017, so its driver advice is dated and should be checked against current Ubuntu documentation for your hardware. Make startup messages visible and test an older kernel
If nomodeset changes nothing, you need to see where startup actually stops.
- Remove the quiet options temporarily. In the same GRUB edit screen, delete
quiet splashfrom thelinuxline, or replacesplashwithnosplash, then press Ctrl+X. The last message on screen is your best clue. Write it down. - Try an older kernel if the problem started after an update. Choose Advanced options for Ubuntu in GRUB and select a previous kernel entry, if one is installed. If that kernel boots, the fault is most likely in the newer kernel or its driver stack. That narrows the cause but does not by itself give you the permanent fix.
- Note what changed. A kernel update, a graphics driver install, a firmware setting change, or a partition change each points to a different next step.
Check Secure Boot only when a driver is involved
Secure Boot checks each boot component before running it. Ubuntu’s security documentation describes firmware that uses NVRAM boot variables and validates Ubuntu’s shim, which then validates GRUB and the kernel. Secure Boot also requires kernel modules to be validated, which matters when a third-party driver is installed. Ubuntu documents signed third-party module workflows and Machine Owner Key (MOK) enrollment, reachable at https://documentation.ubuntu.com/security/security-features/platform-protections/secure-boot/.
- If the failure began right after installing a proprietary graphics driver, look for a blue MOK management screen or a signing prompt during the next boot. Enrolling the key is the documented route.
- If no driver change happened, do not disable Secure Boot as a first step. Identify your distribution, release, and driver first.
- Changing firmware security settings can make some installed drivers stop loading. Record your current setting before you change it.
Use live media when installed recovery cannot start
If the GRUB menu never appears, or recovery mode is unreachable, a bootable Linux live USB gives you a separate environment to inspect the installed system. Use a Linux live image from the same Ubuntu release or a close one. From the live session, you can read logs and confirm that the disk and partitions are visible. A live session does not identify the fault by itself; it only gives you a working environment in which to look. A spare USB flash drive is enough for this purpose, and you should back up any data you care about before making repairs.

When the SSD itself becomes the suspect
A blank display is not evidence of drive failure. Consider storage only after these signs appear together:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Live media cannot see the disk or its partitions at all.
- Firmware does not list the drive in its boot or storage menu.
- Filesystem errors or I/O errors appear in logs from the live session.
Only then should you back up what you can and consider drive diagnostics or replacement. Without a drive model and interface, there is no basis for choosing a replacement part.
The GRUB rescue prompt is a different problem
A grub rescue> prompt means GRUB started but could not find the files it needs to continue. It is a bootloader symptom, not the same as a blank screen after a menu entry. The GNU GRUB manual has a page on the rescue shell at https://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/grub/html_node/GRUB-only-offers-a-rescue-shell.html. Treat it as a reference for what the prompt means, not a step-by-step repair guide. Bootloader repairs that change partitions or install GRUB again need the exact disk layout and firmware mode, so gather those details before running any commands.

What to record before you change anything
- The exact point where the screen goes blank, and the last visible message.
- Whether the system uses UEFI or legacy BIOS, and whether Secure Boot is on.
- Your Ubuntu release, the kernel version in the GRUB entry, and your GPU.
- Any update, driver install, or firmware change made before the failure.
With these details, you can match your symptom to the right branch above and avoid repeating steps that do not apply.
The Bottom Line
Start with recovery mode if the GRUB menu responds, then use the nomodeset test and visible boot messages to locate the failing stage. Treat Secure Boot and storage as later checks, and leave the SSD alone unless live media cannot see the disk.
