South Africa’s mass shootings are more often carried out by several armed men than by one gunman, and police and authorities frequently link them to organised criminal conflict rather than to a lone attacker’s personal grievance or ideology. That pattern is common in the reporting, not universal, and in many cases the motive is still a lead under investigation rather than a settled finding.
How “mass shooting” is defined here
There is no single global definition of a mass shooting. Different countries and datasets count victims differently, and some require a minimum number of deaths while others count people shot regardless of outcome. For South Africa, the Associated Press reports that police use a threshold of three or more people shot in one attack. Any comparison with mass-shooting counts from other countries has to start by checking that threshold, because a three-victim rule captures far more incidents than a four-killed rule would.

Why the lone-gunman comparison does not fit
The lone-gunman image is shaped by a particular kind of attack: one person, often with a grievance against a workplace, school or public venue, who acts alone. The South African incidents reported in 2026 usually look different on three points.

In a September 27, 2026 report, AP said all three shootings it covered that week involved multiple gunmen, according to police. Across its selected set of seven nationally prominent shootings since December, six involved multiple gunmen. AP presents this as its own case selection, not an official national tally.
- Stated motive. Where police have described a motive, it is usually criminal: control of territory, a drug market, extortion, or illegal mining. Ideological or purely personal motives are not the usual frame in these reports.
- Victims. Targets are often people tied to a rival group or a specific business, but bystanders are also killed, as discussed below.
These are patterns in the reporting, not a rule that South African attackers never act alone or that attacks elsewhere are always solo events.

What is behind the attacks
Authorities have connected many incidents to criminal groups competing for turf or trying to establish control. The explanations below are the ones police and reporters describe, and each carries a different level of evidence.
Illegal mining gangs around Johannesburg
AP describes illegal-mining gangs operating in and around Johannesburg’s gold-mining areas as a significant source of armed conflict. Groups fight over access to mining sites and the profits from them. This is one of the clearest criminal economies linked to shootings in the reporting, but the reporting does not put a precise share of incidents on it.
Turf and control disputes on the Cape Flats
A Parliamentary Research Unit report from 2025 describes rival-gang conflict on the Cape Flats, the low-income area around Cape Town. Shootings there happen in residential streets, inside homes and in open spaces, and many are labelled “gang related” by police. The same report warns that people with no gang affiliation, including adults and children, are among those killed. A label of “gang related” therefore describes the suspected context of an incident, not the identity of everyone shot.

Drug markets and extortion
In other places, including parts of Cape Town, AP describes shootings tied to drug-selling operations and extortion rackets. Businesses and sellers who refuse to pay or who compete with an established group can be targeted. As with turf conflicts, these explanations come from police and reporting on specific cases rather than a systematic count of motives.
Suspected revenge: the Wedela case
In a September 2026 shooting in Wedela, police were investigating revenge as a possible lead because one of the victims was connected to an earlier shooting. That is an investigative line, not a proven motive. Revenge cycles are plausible in gang conflicts, but a connection between two shootings does not by itself establish who ordered either attack.
Who is hit, and where
AP’s account places recent attacks in low-income townships near Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The settings it describes include bars, shops near entertainment venues, houses and streets. Residents in affected areas have raised concerns about gangs and illegal guns. The reporting also points to distance from police stations and poor street lighting as factors that can increase vulnerability.

AP’s reporting describes poorer communities as carrying a disproportionate share of the harm. That is a description of where attacks concentrate and who bears them. It does not establish that poverty causes the violence, and the reporting does not make that claim.
The numbers, and what each one can show
Several official and press figures are often cited together. They measure different things, cover different places and periods, and should not be added or compared directly.

The Western Cape figures describe one quarter and a broad category of murder, not mass shootings. Gang-related murders make up about a fifth of the Western Cape murders in that quarter (208 of 1,068), and firearm murders are more than half (590 of 1,068). The firearm-recovery total shows weapons seized, not weapons used in mass shootings.

No complete, comparable official national series of mass shootings is established in the sources available. The AP figures describe selected high-profile attacks, so they cannot be read as a national annual rate.

The South African Police Service annual report describes the Firearms Control Act framework as intended to prevent the spread of illegally possessed firearms, remove them from society, improve control over legal firearms and promote responsible ownership. The same report records firearm recoveries and operations against gang-related crime, illicit mining, drug trafficking, taxi-related violence, political assassinations and faction disputes.

The reporting presents the deployment as a response. The available sources do not show whether it has reduced mass shootings, and that question will need data from later periods.

How to read a report on a South African shooting
- Check how many people were shot or killed, and whether the report uses the three-or-more-shot threshold or a different rule.
- Check whether the number of gunmen is stated by police, by witnesses, or by the reporter’s own count.
- Separate the motive as stated by police from a motive described as a “lead” or “possible” explanation.
- Note whether a victim’s gang affiliation is confirmed or simply suspected.
- Match any statistic to its geography, period and measure before comparing it with another figure.
Limits of the current picture
Investigations change. Suspect counts, motives and the links between incidents may be revised as police complete their work, so each claim should be read with its source and date. The strongest evidence available today describes patterns in selected attacks and in provincial crime categories. It does not yet provide a full national account of why each mass shooting happens.
The Bottom Line
South African mass shootings are often different from the lone-gunman model: several assailants, criminal motives such as turf control, illegal mining, drug markets and extortion, and victims who include people with no gang link. Those patterns are well documented in recent reporting, but they are not universal, and some motives, including the revenge lead in the Wedela case, remain unconfirmed.
