If you want to replace Windows with Linux in 2026, start with the apps and hardware you rely on—not a universal “best distro” ranking. Zorin OS is the most directly guided transition on this shortlist; Ubuntu 26.04 LTS has a clearly stated support window and system requirements; Pop!_OS emphasizes keyboard-driven workflows and gaming tools. Fedora Workstation and elementary OS are also options, but current release and support details are less firmly established here.
This is a fit-based editorial shortlist, not a hands-on test or compatibility audit. Linux is not a guarantee that a Windows app, peripheral, or game will work.

How to choose a Windows replacement
Before installing anything, make a short list of what your computer must do. A familiar desktop can ease the transition, but it cannot compensate for an essential application or device that is unsupported.
Recommended Free Tools
- Check your essential apps and games. Look for a native Linux version or a supported alternative. Treat Windows-app handling tools as possibilities to investigate, not guarantees.
- Check peripherals. Confirm that your printer, scanner, audio equipment, graphics hardware, and other essential devices work with the distribution you are considering.
- Match the support and update model to your needs. A long-term-support release may suit someone who wants a stated maintenance horizon; readers who value newer software should verify the current release cadence and support policy.
- Consider the workflow. Desktop familiarity, keyboard shortcuts, tiling, gaming tools, and the age or capacity of your computer can matter more than a distro’s general reputation.
For installation, Canonical says Ubuntu ISO installation uses a USB port or DVD drive for installation media. It recommends an internet connection for updates and additional software, but says internet is not required for the initial install. Check the target distribution’s own ISO and installer instructions before preparing media.

Five Linux distributions to consider instead of Windows
The options below are selected for different needs, not ranked by measured performance. Where a current release or support detail is not established, the comparison says so rather than implying that all five have been verified equally.
| Distribution | Best fit to investigate | What is established | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zorin OS | A guided transition from Windows | Zorin OS 18.1 release date and support end date; app-detection and desktop details | Whether your specific apps and devices work |
| Ubuntu 26.04 LTS | A documented support horizon and published requirements | Release date, five-year standard security and critical bug-fix window, and comfortable desktop requirements | Whether your hardware meets the requirements and your applications are available |
| Fedora Workstation | Readers considering a desktop Linux option with newer software | The Fedora Project identifies it as its desktop Linux offering | Current release, support window, requirements, and transition features |
| Pop!_OS | Keyboard-driven, tiling, or gaming-oriented workflows | System76 lists auto-tiling, Steam access, and Ubuntu-compatible tools | Compatibility with your games, apps, and hardware; claims are vendor descriptions, not independent performance results |
| elementary OS | Readers drawn to a design-led desktop | Current release and support details are not established here | Current release, support, requirements, and features before choosing |
Zorin OS: the most guided Windows transition
Zorin OS 18.1 was released on April 15, 2026, and Zorin lists support through June 1, 2029. The release is based on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. Zorin says its database can detect more than 240 Windows apps and suggest native Linux apps or alternatives. That figure describes the size of the detection database, not a success rate or a promise that those Windows apps will run. Zorin’s release announcement and its technical details page provide the product information.

- Intel Core i5-10210U (up to 4.2GHz) - 1TB PCIe NVMe + 1TB HDD - 32GB DDR4 SDRAM
- 17.3" HD+ (1600x900) Display, Intel UHD Graphics 620
- Built in HD 720p Webcam with Microphone - Bluetooth Version4.2
- I/O Ports: 2x USB 3.1 (Data Only), 1x USB 2.0, 1x HDMI, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack
- Linux Mint Cinnamon 64-Bit - 6-Row Keyboard w/ Full Numberpad
Zorin OS 18.1 includes LibreOffice 26.2 and supports APT, Flatpak, Snap, .deb packages, and AppImage. Optional Windows App Support adds handling for .exe and .msi files; this should not be read as universal Windows-software compatibility. Core and Pro use GNOME Shell, while Lite uses XFCE and is aimed at older or lower-spec computers. The release announcement identifies XFCE 4.20 for Lite. Zorin also reported 3.3 million downloads for the Zorin OS 18 release series; that is a vendor-reported download count, not a count of active users or people who switched from Windows.

Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: the clearest support-first option
Canonical dates Ubuntu 26.04 LTS to April 23, 2026. Its release notes say the standard security-update and critical-bug-fix period runs for five years, through April 2031. Ubuntu Pro provides access to ten years of Expanded Security Maintenance; this is a separate offering, not the standard five-year period. Canonical’s Ubuntu 26.04 LTS release notes describe both the support information and system requirements.

For Ubuntu Desktop 26.04, Canonical calls a 2 GHz dual-core processor, at least 6 GB of RAM, and 25 GB of free storage comfortable requirements. These are published desktop requirements, not a guarantee of good performance on every qualifying machine. Canonical recommends an Ubuntu flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu for computers below those requirements.
Fedora Workstation: verify the current release details
The Fedora Project describes Workstation as its desktop Linux offering. It is a candidate for readers who prioritize newer software, but current release number, support window, minimum requirements, and specific Windows-transition features are not established in the available official product information. Check Fedora’s current release documentation before using those details to decide. Fedora Workstation

Which one should you try first?

If you are unsure, try a live session or test installation where the distribution supports it, and keep your existing Windows installation and backups intact until you have verified the apps, devices, and day-to-day tasks you depend on. The right choice is the one that works for your actual setup, not simply the one with the most familiar-looking desktop.
