Yes, a VPN on a Linksys router can route a smart TV, desktop, and phone through one VPN connection—but only if the exact router model and firmware support the VPN provider’s required client. Linksys branding or a menu labeled “VPN” is not enough to establish compatibility. The clearest provider-specific Linksys option comes with a significant warning: ExpressVPN says security updates for its supported Linksys models have ended.
Can you install a VPN on a Linksys router?
Sometimes. Compatibility depends on the router’s exact model and hardware revision, its firmware, and the protocol or provider-specific software the VPN requires. A router that supports VPN passthrough, or offers an L2TP service setting, does not necessarily support acting as an OpenVPN or WireGuard client.

Before choosing a service, check whether its official setup instructions name your specific Linksys model and firmware. Proton VPN says router use requires OpenVPN or WireGuard client support; NordVPN says its configuration may require an OpenVPN client. Their general router instructions do not establish that a standard Linksys router supports those clients. Proton VPN’s router requirements and NordVPN’s router setup guidance describe provider-specific requirements, not universal Linksys compatibility.

The Linksys E9450 user guide describes its VPN menu as an L2TP service configuration. That alone does not show that the router can act as an OpenVPN or WireGuard client or connect to a particular commercial VPN. Check the E9450 user guide alongside the VPN provider’s requirements before treating the menu as proof of compatibility.

Which Linksys models does ExpressVPN list?
ExpressVPN’s Linksys router-app guide names these eight model entries: EA6200, WRT1200AC, WRT1900AC 13J1, WRT1900AC 13J2, WRT1900ACS, WRT1900ACS V2, WRT3200ACM, and WRT32X. However, its guide states that security updates for ExpressVPN on all supported Linksys router models have ended. These are therefore legacy configuration options, not automatically sensible choices for a new purchase or a claim of current security support.
ExpressVPN’s guide, updated October 5, 2026, describes downloading firmware for the exact model and installing it through the router’s admin panel. The installation replaces existing settings, including the Wi-Fi name and password. If you already use another router, ExpressVPN suggests adding the Linksys as a secondary router; this may reduce disruption to the existing setup, but it does not change the ended-update status. Read the ExpressVPN Linksys setup guide before proceeding.

How to check compatibility before setup
- Identify the exact router. Check the model and hardware revision on the device label or in its admin interface. Do not rely on “Linksys” alone.
- Confirm the required VPN client. Check whether the provider requires OpenVPN, WireGuard, or its own router firmware, then verify that the router’s firmware supports that client.
- Look for instructions for that exact model and firmware. A general router guide or a VPN menu is not equivalent to an official model-specific setup path.
- Check update status and installation effects. Confirm whether the router and any provider firmware still receive security updates, and note whether installation will replace Wi-Fi or other settings.
- Choose the connection approach. If the router cannot run the chosen VPN client, use compatible apps on individual devices, a TV-native app where available, or replacement hardware with confirmed protocol support.
What a router VPN covers—and what it does not
Devices that connect through the VPN-configured router can have their internet traffic routed through that VPN connection. This can include a smart TV, desktop computer, and mobile devices, including devices without a convenient native VPN app. Proton VPN describes its router setup as protecting devices connected to the home network, but the protection applies to traffic between the router and the internet—not the local link between a device and the router, or local Bluetooth traffic.
Use a strong Wi-Fi password and keep unknown devices off the network. A router VPN is not a substitute for securing the wireless connection itself.

Should you use the router, device apps, or a TV app?
| Approach | Useful when | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| VPN on the router | You want devices connected through that router to use one VPN connection, especially devices without a convenient VPN app. | Requires compatible router firmware and client support; weaker hardware may reduce speed. Server changes can require manual configuration, and app features or per-device controls may be limited. |
| VPN apps on desktop and mobile | You want device-level choices or provider-app features on computers and phones. | Each device needs a compatible app and its own setup. |
| VPN app on the TV | The TV’s operating system and the selected provider offer a compatible native app. | Availability depends on both the TV platform and provider; do not assume support across brands or services. |
For one provider-specific example, NordVPN lists native apps for Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV, while its guidance lists router or PC-sharing approaches for Chromecast and Roku, and Samsung TV. Those options are not a universal compatibility list; check the chosen provider’s current official device guidance. See NordVPN’s smart TV and console setup guidance.
Router configuration can also be less convenient for switching VPN servers and may not expose features such as split tunneling that are available in provider apps. Performance depends on the router’s processing capacity; no model-specific speed result follows from compatibility alone.

When your Linksys router is not compatible
If your current router lacks the VPN client protocol your provider requires, do not infer compatibility from passthrough support or a similarly named setting. Use provider apps on the devices that support them, check for a native app on the TV, or consider a VPN-client router with the required protocol. Before buying replacement hardware, confirm the exact model’s protocol support and security-update policy with the manufacturer or VPN provider; the category alone does not guarantee either.
