Together, they describe different parts of recent price action—not a reliable prediction or a guaranteed buy-or-sell signal.
What a moving average tells you
A moving average (MA) calculates an average price across a chosen number of past bars. Smoothing short-term fluctuations can make the broader direction easier to interpret, but it also means the indicator responds after price has moved. TradingView describes moving averages as lagging tools for confirmation and analysis, not prediction: TradingView’s moving-average documentation.

SMA, EMA, and WMA
- Simple moving average (SMA): averages prices across the selected period.
- Exponential moving average (EMA): gives recent observations more influence through a multiplier. TradingView gives the calculation as
EMA = (current close − previous EMA) × multiplier + previous EMA, wheremultiplier = 2/(period + 1). - Weighted moving average (WMA): applies weights to observations within the selected period.
These variants differ in how they weight the price history; none removes the basic limitation that a moving average summarizes past prices.

What RSI measures
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is a momentum oscillator bounded from 0 to 100. It compares average gains with average losses over a selected number of bars. TradingView expresses its calculation as RSI = 100 − 100/(1 + RS), where RS = average gain / average loss; its example uses Wilder-style smoothed averages. See TradingView’s RSI documentation.

Read the period in the chart’s timeframe
Fourteen bars is the popular or default RSI length described by TradingView, though other lengths are used. A 14-bar RSI on a daily chart uses daily bars; on an hourly chart it uses hourly bars. TradingView says J. Welles Wilder Jr. introduced RSI in his 1978 book New Concepts in Technical Trading Systems.
Overbought and oversold are interpretations
Readings toward the upper end of the scale indicate stronger recent upward momentum; readings toward the lower end indicate stronger recent downward momentum. The familiar terms “overbought” and “oversold” do not mean a reversal must happen soon. TradingView cautions against inferring the next market direction from one RSI value or using RSI as the sole basis for a trading decision.

How moving averages and RSI differ
| Indicator | What it uses | What it displays | Useful interpretation | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Moving average | Past prices across a selected lookback | An average on the price scale | Smoothed trend context | It lags because it reflects earlier price action |
| RSI | Average gains and losses derived from price changes | An oscillator from 0 to 100 | Recent momentum | Threshold readings do not guarantee a reversal |
How to use both without treating them as a formula
- Choose the chart timeframe and lookbacks. A bar represents the chart’s interval, so make sure the MA and RSI periods are understood in that context.
- Use the moving average for broad context. It smooths prices over its chosen lookback, but its lag means it cannot confirm a future move in advance.
- Use RSI to inspect momentum. Its reading summarizes the balance of gains and losses over its own lookback; it may reflect a different window from the MA.
- Interpret disagreement as information, not an instruction. An RSI reading and a moving-average direction can differ because they measure different features or periods. A crossover, threshold, or divergence is a chart condition that needs context, not an automatic signal.
These indicators can help organize chart interpretation, but the available documentation does not establish that a combined rule is profitable. Neither indicator guarantees a market direction or a trading result.

Chart indicators and investment risk are separate questions. In a September 9, 2024 bulletin about bitcoin and ether exchange-traded products (ETPs), the SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy described bitcoin and ether as highly speculative and urged investors considering an ETP to weigh its risks and benefits carefully. That statement concerns those assets in the ETP context; it does not show that RSI or moving averages predict crypto returns. Read the SEC investor bulletin.
