LineageOS 24 is based on Android 17, according to the project’s Google Apps documentation. That does not mean every phone can install it—or that every app will work. Check support for your exact device and test the apps you rely on before replacing your current system.
What the Android 17 upgrade means
LineageOS’s version mapping identifies LineageOS 24 as Android 17. This establishes the project’s platform version; it is not a promise that every Android phone has a LineageOS 24 build. Installation availability and requirements vary by device.

Google says Android 17 began rolling out to Pixel devices and was expected to reach other eligible Android devices during 2026. That rollout is separate from LineageOS: a phone’s eligibility for an official Android update does not establish that it supports LineageOS 24, or vice versa. Android 17’s platform requirements likewise do not guarantee that third-party apps and services will accept a custom-ROM installation.
Will your apps still work?
LineageOS is Android, and its installation guidance says apps are supported in the usual Android manner. But individual app providers can choose to exclude LineageOS users. Compatibility depends on the specific app, device, and system state; the Android version number alone cannot settle it.

Before migrating, check the device guide’s quirks and test the exact apps that matter to you, especially banking, payments, work, streaming, and authentication. Do not assume that Play Integrity checks, DRM-protected content, Google services, or every app will work just because the phone runs Android 17.
Check device support and the migration before you start
- Find your exact model and variant in the official device listings. A guide for a similar model is not a substitute for the exact one.
- Read that device’s installation guide and quirks. It specifies the required starting firmware, recovery, partitions, and installation steps. For a concrete example of how device-specific instructions can be, see the river installation guide; it applies to that device only.
- Back up your data and assess the wipe risk. Upgrading across LineageOS versions uses a manual process similar to a first installation, not a routine updater flow. The exact device procedure may wipe data; follow its guide rather than assuming an in-place upgrade is available.
- Decide whether you want Google Apps. They are optional and not bundled with LineageOS. If you want them, check the supported package and architecture before beginning.
- Prepare for the documented workflow. Some device guides use ADB with a computer. If yours does, confirm that your cable fits the phone and supports data transfer; a charging-only cable will not serve that purpose.
Google Apps are optional, but the installation order matters
For LineageOS 24, the official package list points to MindTheGapps for ARM and ARM64 devices. Use the architecture specified for your device. Google Apps packages are developed independently of LineageOS; the project states, “The Google Apps packages are not supported in any way by LineageOS.”

If you choose to install Google Apps, flash the package in recovery immediately after installing LineageOS and before booting the new system. According to the official instructions, booting LineageOS first means you must factory-reset before installing Google Apps. A factory reset erases data, so decide on the package and sequence before you begin.

- Device: Is your exact model and variant listed, and can you meet its firmware and installation requirements?
- Essential apps: Have you verified the apps you depend on with this device and LineageOS installation state?
- Google services: Do you want Google Apps and the Play Store, or are you prepared to use the system without them?
- Migration: Are you comfortable following a manual computer-and-recovery procedure, backing up first, and accepting a possible data wipe?
Android 17 includes platform changes such as app memory limits intended to prevent an individual app from using too much RAM. Google’s Android 17 feature information describes the platform change, but it does not establish how a particular LineageOS build implements it or how it behaves on a specific phone.
