A line matrix printer is an impact printer that builds text and graphics from dots, printing successive rows across a line. Springs carrying hammers sweep back and forth on a shuttle, striking an ink ribbon against the paper. Because the mechanism presses marks onto the page, it can also be used for multipart forms.
How a line matrix printer works
The printer stores characters as dot patterns and divides each printable line into horizontal rows of dots. In the Printronix P8 printer manual, the mechanism is described as printing patterns of ink dots an entire line at a time.

- Prepare a dot row: Printer logic identifies which positions in the current horizontal row need a dot to form the text or graphic.
- Sweep and strike: Hammer springs mounted on a shuttle move rapidly across the page. At the required positions, the hammers press the ink ribbon against the paper.
- Reverse and advance: At the end of a sweep, the shuttle reverses direction and the paper advances by one dot row.
- Repeat: Further shuttle passes print the next rows until the characters or graphics are complete.
The mechanism is an impact process: the hammer presses the ribbon against the paper rather than depositing ink without contact. That pressure is also what can transfer marks through multipart forms.

Line matrix versus serial dot matrix
Both technologies create output from dots, but they organize the printing differently. A serial dot matrix printer forms characters sequentially with a moving printhead. A line matrix printer instead prints successive dot rows across the line as its shuttle sweeps back and forth. The distinction is about how the printer builds the page, not whether it uses dots.

Where line matrix printers are used
Documented uses include high-speed printing of invoices, bank statements, shipping and transportation documents, and compliance labels. Line matrix printers can print text, barcodes, and graphics. Their impact mechanism is useful when an organization needs multipart copies, since pressure can transfer marks to sheets beneath the top page.
They are therefore best understood as specialized equipment for paperwork workflows that benefit from impact printing, continuous or high-volume output, or multipart forms—not as a general-purpose replacement for every office printer. Red Hat’s documentation describes impact printers as most functional in specialized environments where low-cost printing is important; that is not evidence of a universal cost advantage for line matrix printers.

What to consider before choosing one
Whether a line matrix printer fits depends on the work and the full operating trade-offs, rather than on a single speed or price claim. Assess:

- Forms: Do you need impact printing to make multipart copies, or do your forms require a particular impact mechanism?
- Workload: Does the workflow involve continuous or high-volume paperwork, such as invoices or shipping documents?
- Supplies: Confirm ribbon availability and compatibility for the exact printer model before relying on a supply-cost assumption.
- Work environment: Consider output quality and noise alongside the needs of the forms workflow.
The sources cited here do not provide a current comparative cost study, so costs and practical advantages should be assessed for the particular printer, supplies, and workload.
