In Limbus Company, “damage dealer,” “tank,” and “support” are useful ways to describe what an Identity does—not official character classes. Judge an Identity by its skills, passives, and effects in your team and encounter, rather than by a single stat or a fixed role label.
What do damage dealer, tank, and support mean?
Identities are alternate possibilities for the Sinners, each with a distinct combat kit. Project Moon’s official site describes the Identity concept and the game’s combat systems, but does not define a formal three-role taxonomy. The labels below are practical shorthand for reading a kit, not developer-issued classifications. Project Moon’s official Limbus Company site introduces Identities alongside systems such as E.G.O, clashes, stagger, speed, and resonance.

- Damage dealer: An Identity whose main contribution is dealing damage or turning an opening into damage quickly.
- Tank: An Identity that can take, redirect, or endure incoming attacks, helping preserve the team’s ability to act. High HP alone does not establish that a unit is a tank; look for what its kit actually does defensively.
- Support: An Identity whose skills, passives, or team interactions help allies, weaken enemies, or provide other utility. Support can overlap with damage or durability.
The community Identity reference also describes kits in terms of different archetypes and notes their Combat and Support Passives. Treat that as a way to inspect mechanics, not as an official class list.
Why an Identity’s role depends on the fight
Roles in Limbus Company cannot be reduced to a fixed formation slot. During combat, units can target one another and Clash; the Steam listing explains that the clash winner can shut down the opposing skill. It also points players toward choosing skills, building teams with Identities and E.G.O, and learning enemy behavior and weaknesses. Limbus Company on Steam describes these combat interactions.

Project Moon’s overview likewise highlights speed, clashes, stagger, and resonance as tactical systems that can affect targeting, damage, and whether an enemy action is canceled. An Identity that contributes damage in one matchup may be more valuable for its defensive or enabling effects in another. Its contribution can also change with the rest of the team and the E.G.O available.
How to identify the role an Identity fills
- Read the skills and passives. Check what they do in combat: deal damage, withstand or redirect attacks, apply effects to enemies, or enable allies. Note any conditions required for those effects.
- Consider clashes. Since a clash winner can shut down the opposing skill, an Identity’s value is not only its damage after an attack lands. Consider how its skills perform against the attacks you expect to face.
- Look at the team and E.G.O. An Identity may add a needed effect, complement another kit, or gain value through team interactions. The Steam listing specifically encourages composing teams with Identities and E.G.O for synergies.
- Account for the enemy and encounter. Enemy behavior and weaknesses affect which skills and team are appropriate. A role description is most useful when tied to the fight you are preparing for.
- Allow for overlap. One Identity can contribute in more than one way. Describe the actual combination—such as damage plus utility—rather than forcing it into a single box.
What “good” means for an Identity
“Is this Identity good?” has no reliable universal answer without context. A useful evaluation asks what the kit contributes, whether its passives and conditions fit the team, how it handles the relevant clashes, and whether its effects answer the enemy’s weaknesses or behavior. A current, definitive Identity-by-Identity assignment or ranking cannot be established from role labels alone; balance judgments need current kit information and a dated evaluation.

For a roster overview, the Prydwen Identity index can serve as a navigation reference. Do not treat a roster index, or a role label by itself, as proof that an Identity is best for every team or encounter.
