Installing a launcher on a Fire TV and making it open when you press Home are separate jobs. Amazon documents how to sideload an app, but not a universal way to replace the Home screen. For Home-button redirection, projects such as Home on Fire and FTVLaunchX add their own setup and compatibility requirements. The right choice depends on your Fire OS version, device, preferred level of customization, and willingness to grant permissions—not on a verified cross-device speed ranking.
What a Fire TV launcher can—and cannot—replace
A third-party launcher can provide a different app screen, such as a simpler grid or a more customizable layout. That does not automatically make it the screen that opens when you press the remote’s Home button. Installing the APK, launching it manually, and redirecting Home are distinct steps; the last one depends on the launcher or a helper app.

There is also a trade-off beyond appearance. Amazon’s stock interface can show catalog-integrated content and subscription status, as described in its Fire TV catalog integration documentation. If those integrations matter to you, consider whether a third-party home screen is worth losing that native presentation.

| Option | Best fit | Home-button approach | Compatibility and setup notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TV Launcher | A simple, customizable Android TV-style app grid with optional features. | Home override is an optional accessibility feature; the launcher may need that feature to redirect Home. | Install the APK by sideloading, then check whether its Home override works on your exact Fire TV and Fire OS version. Its memory figures are developer estimates from a typical Android TV setup, not Fire TV comparative tests. |
| Home on Fire | Redirecting Home to a chosen launcher on a supported Fire OS device. | The project documents Home-button redirection through its accessibility service or secure-settings permissions granted through ADB. | The project reports support for Fire OS 7 and 8, says Fire OS 7 may have a delay, and lists Vega OS as unsupported. These are project-maintained claims; check the current guide for your model. |
| FTVLaunchX | Routing boot, wake, and Home actions to an installed launcher through a helper. | Select the target launcher in FTVLaunchX after completing its permission setup. | Setup involves developer settings and ADB or an applicable accessibility route. The project notes that Home does not exit an active screensaver and that the original long-press Home action is replaced by a button combination. |
| LTvLauncher | More extensive visual customization, themes, and app organization. | Includes a Home-button accessibility fix. | The project offers a universal APK and architecture-specific builds. Check your device architecture and OS. Its alternative method of disabling system packages is advanced and carries risk; it is not a routine setup step. |
How to choose for your device and habits
- For a basic app grid: TV Launcher is positioned as a simple customizable grid. Its optional features may change resource use, so keep the setup lean if simplicity is the goal.
- For a dedicated Home redirect: Home on Fire is a direct option if your device runs a supported Fire OS generation. FTVLaunchX is another helper-based route, with additional boot and wake behavior documented by its project.
- For visual control: LTvLauncher documents multiple themes and app-organization features. The more features and permissions involved, the more carefully you should verify compatibility and setup steps.
- For minimal permission changes: Check the exact Home-button mechanism before installing. A launcher may work when opened from the app list but still require accessibility or secure-settings permissions—or a helper—to respond to Home.
- If you depend on Amazon’s integrated catalog view: Stay with the stock interface unless the replacement’s benefits outweigh losing that native presentation.
There is no controlled, same-device comparison establishing a universal performance winner among these projects. Compatibility statements are maintained by their developers and can change; verify the current documentation against your Fire TV model and OS rather than treating “Fire TV compatible” as a guarantee.

Install a launcher APK on Fire TV
Amazon defines installing an app outside the Appstore as sideloading. Its Fire TV app installation guide documents an ADB workflow. In that workflow, connect your computer to the Fire TV through ADB and run:
adb install <path-to-apk-file>
- Confirm the APK matches your device. For LTvLauncher, the project provides a universal APK as well as architecture-specific builds; use the project’s current guidance to select one.
- Enable the required developer settings and connect through ADB. Follow Amazon’s current installation guide for the device-specific connection process.
- Install the APK. Run the command above from the computer connected to the Fire TV, substituting the actual APK path.
- Open it from Fire TV. Amazon says sideloaded apps appear in Recent and My Library and can also be launched from Settings under Manage Installed Applications.
- Set up Home behavior separately, if wanted. Follow the selected launcher or helper’s current instructions; a successful install alone does not make the app the Home-button destination.

Home on Fire
The project documents installing the app on the TV, including ADB installation, USB transfer on certain devices, and Downloader as another way to move the APK onto Sticks. USB transfer is documented for Fire TV Cube, some Fire TV televisions, and Sticks with a USB-OTG adapter—not every Fire TV. After installation, its setup enables the accessibility service or grants secure settings through ADB, then selects a target launcher. Consult the project’s current instructions for your exact device and OS: Home on Fire project documentation.

FTVLaunchX
The project’s documented process enables ADB debugging and unknown sources, installs the APK, grants WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS or follows the applicable accessibility route, and then selects a launcher. Instructions differ for some Fire OS generations, so use the current version of the FTVLaunchX setup guide rather than copying commands intended for another generation. Expect the documented remote-control limitations: Home does not dismiss an active screensaver, and long-press Home’s original action is replaced by a button combination.
TV Launcher and LTvLauncher
TV Launcher’s Home override is optional and uses an accessibility feature. LTvLauncher also documents an accessibility-based Home-button fix. In either case, install and test the launcher first, then follow the project’s current instructions for enabling Home behavior; do not assume the feature is configured merely because the APK opens.

What is known about memory use
The TV Launcher project gives approximate total PSS estimates on a typical Android TV setup, with different configurations. The page does not state a publication year, and these are not Fire TV-specific measurements or independent benchmarks.
| TV Launcher configuration | Approximate total PSS reported by the project |
|---|---|
| Auto-update off | 25–30 MB |
| Auto-update on | 30–40 MB |
| Home-button override enabled | 45–50 MB |
| Online wallpaper cycling enabled | 55–60 MB |
The figures are configuration-dependent estimates, not proof that one launcher is faster or lighter than another on your Fire TV. The project describes them on its TV Launcher project page.

Compatibility checks before changing Home
- Identify the operating system. Home on Fire’s project documentation names Fire OS 7 and 8 and says Vega OS is unsupported. Do not infer support for another OS from a device’s Fire TV branding.
- Check the exact model and generation. Installation methods, USB support, processor architecture, and project-specific steps can differ across Sticks, Cubes, and televisions.
- Know which permissions are involved. Accessibility and secure-settings permissions enable behavior beyond merely opening an app. Grant only what the chosen project’s current setup requires.
- Preserve a recovery route. Before changing Home behavior, make sure you can still open Settings and Manage Installed Applications to launch or remove the sideloaded app if redirection does not work as expected.
- Avoid disabling system packages as a shortcut. LTvLauncher’s guide describes this advanced approach and warns of system-package risks; casual users should not treat it as standard launcher setup.
When USB transfer is an option
If you prefer moving an APK by USB, confirm that your exact Fire TV supports the route before buying or using an OTG adapter. The Home on Fire documentation identifies Fire TV Cube, some Fire TV televisions, and Sticks with a USB-OTG adapter as supported cases, and lists Downloader as an alternative for Sticks without USB transfer. ADB installation is another documented route and avoids assuming that every model has compatible USB hardware. See the project’s installation notes for current device-specific detail.
