Start with Lightroom’s free Matte preset
Adobe’s built-in Matte preset is the quickest no-cost starting point. Adobe describes the look as subdued in saturation and high in contrast, giving photos a cinematic feel. In Lightroom, find it under Basics › Color › Matte. Adobe also lists built-in vintage options including Vintage Instant, Aged Photo, B&W Sepia, and Selenium Tone. See Adobe’s vintage preset guide.

A preset is a starting adjustment, not a guaranteed finish. Preview it and assess how it affects the subject, skin tones, contrast, and overall color. Lightroom’s Amount slider lets you reduce or increase a preset’s effect from 0 to 200, according to Adobe’s help documentation last updated April 16, 2026. Some presets may be only partially compatible with an image; check the rendered result rather than assuming every adjustment will transfer as intended. Read Adobe’s Lightroom presets help.

Choose a preset by the photo, not the preset count
A matte treatment can behave differently from one image to another. A high-contrast version may suit a scene that can carry deeper shadows, while portraits may call for gentler contrast and careful attention to skin color. Before settling on a preset, compare:
- Color and subject: Check skin, important objects, and background colors for unwanted shifts.
- Contrast: Look for shadows or highlights that lose detail, especially with a high-contrast matte style.
- Warmth and coolness: See whether the color balance supports the scene rather than distracting from it.
- Strength: Reduce or increase the Amount setting instead of accepting the default intensity.
- Compatibility: Match the format and stated application support to your Lightroom edition and version.
Adobe documents Lightroom presets as predefined adjustments that can affect settings such as exposure, contrast, saturation, and color grading. Lightroom also supports previewing and customizing presets, so a collection’s size alone does not tell you whether it will suit your workflow. Adobe’s help page says that, from Lightroom Desktop v9.3, the Premium category includes a Style: Film-Inspired group with variants such as Warm B&W, Muted B&W, Faded Blue, and Light Sage. That availability is specific to the documented version and desktop app. Check Adobe’s current preset documentation.

How to install Lightroom presets and save your own matte look
Installation instructions depend on the application, version, and preset format. For a downloaded preset, follow the provider’s instructions for the specific .XMP or .lrtemplate file and confirm that the file is intended for your Lightroom edition. Compatibility labels spanning multiple Adobe apps do not establish that every file works in every version.

You can also create a reusable look directly from an edit. In Lightroom, tune a photo until the matte treatment looks right, then save the current edit settings as a User Preset. Adobe’s help documentation covers previewing presets, adjusting Amount, and saving settings as a user preset. See Adobe’s instructions for editing with presets. Adobe describes Lightroom as available on desktop, web, and mobile, with presets also useful for speeding up batch-editing workflows; exact controls and availability can vary by platform.
