If Lightroom Classic appears to skip export sequence numbers, first check the filename template and the order of the exported files. For a sequence that continues across separate export batches, write down the last number used and set the next batch’s start number yourself. Adobe documents the export naming controls, but has not confirmed a v15 counter defect or a guaranteed fix for skipped values.
How Lightroom Classic export sequence numbers work
Open File > Export and look in the File Naming area to choose or edit the filename template. Adobe’s Filename Template Editor help page describes tokens for building names and a Sequence And Date section for sequential numbers and capture date or time.

The export sequence token is not the same as the Import and Image numbering controls described on that help page. Adobe notes that the standard Numbering element is unavailable in the filename editor for exports; use the export-specific Sequence And Date controls instead.

First decide whether the gap is real
Check the exported files sorted by filename before changing settings. A confusing display or sort order can make a sequence look incomplete. Compare the names themselves and identify which numbers are absent. If the sequence is correct within one batch but starts over on the next export, the issue is continuity between exports, not missing numbers within a batch.

Fix continuity between separate export batches
The export sequence token can number photos in a selected export batch. Do not assume it will automatically continue a longer sequence across separate export operations. Community guidance recommends recording the last number used and explicitly entering the next start value for the next batch. This is forum guidance, not an official current v15 guarantee.
- Export the first batch and note the highest sequence number in its filenames.
- Open File > Export for the next batch and inspect the sequence start-number field.
- Enter the next intended number, then check the filename preview before exporting.
- Export to a test folder and sort the resulting filenames to confirm the sequence.
A Lightroom Queen forum discussion from July 2025 covers manually carrying numbering between export operations. An older Adobe Community Expert reply from April 10, 2020 also recommended tracking the next number manually because the application did not remember an export sequence for continuation; it is not a v15-specific statement.

Troubleshoot numbers skipped within a batch
- Inspect the template. In File > Export > File Naming, confirm that the intended sequence token is included and that the preview shows the expected format.
- Check the start number. Verify the value in the export workflow, especially if you have recently exported another batch.
- Run a controlled test. Export a small selection to a test folder and inspect the actual filenames sorted by name. This helps distinguish a template or ordering confusion from numbers genuinely absent in the output.
- Consider restarting Lightroom Classic. In an Adobe Community thread, one participant said the skipping “seems fixed after restarting,” while other problems remained. That is an anecdotal report, not a guaranteed cure.
Adobe Community users in a March–May 2026 discussion about file-renaming sequence behavior described skipped values, start-number resets, and missing leading zeros. The reports establish that users encountered these symptoms; they do not establish their cause or how often they occur.
If the problem continues
Capture enough detail to make the issue reproducible: the exact Lightroom Classic version, operating system, filename template, start number, number of selected photos, filename sort order, and whether the gap occurs within one export or only across multiple exports. The available Adobe documentation and community reports do not establish which of these factors causes skipped values.

A third-party article published September 21, 2026 proposes that v15 keeps a counter in memory and describes a v15.3 state in which the visible start value may differ from the counter. Adobe’s reviewed materials do not confirm that internal explanation, so treat it as unverified rather than as a diagnosis or a version-specific fix. The article is available at TheGeekPage.
