If a photo is still on your device but will not open, looks corrupted, or shows missing colors or blocks, the problem may be damage to the file’s structure, its image data, or both. Stellar Repair for Photo offers a preview-first repair workflow for several photo formats, but it cannot promise a complete visual recovery: a result may be incomplete, and repaired camera RAW files are saved as JPEG.
What can go wrong inside a photo file?
An unreadable photo is a symptom, not a diagnosis. In its 2018 Windows manual, Stellar distinguishes between a JPEG’s container—the structure that identifies and organizes the file—and the image data stored inside it. If the container is damaged, software may fail to recognize the file as a JPEG and report an invalid image. If the container remains readable but the image data is damaged, a repair may open the photo while leaving missing areas or lost color. Stellar’s Windows product page lists version 8.9.0.0, with a May 2026 release date. The supported formats shown there are JPEG/JPG, TIFF, DNG, HEIC, ARW, CR2, CR3, CRW, ERF, MRW, NEF, NRW, ORF, PEF, RAF, SR2, RW2, and SRF. The same page specifies 64-bit Windows 11, 10, 8.1, and 8, plus Windows Server 2022, 2019, and 2016; it lists 4 GB minimum memory, 8 GB recommended, and 250 MB for installation files. Pay particular attention to output format if the damaged original is RAW. Stellar says repaired RAW images are listed and saved as JPEG, rather than restored in their native camera-RAW format. JPEG output may be useful for viewing or sharing, but it is not a like-for-like replacement if your workflow depends on editing the original RAW file. How the repair workflow works
- Add the damaged photos. Choose the files that are present but fail to open or display properly.
- Run Repair. Stellar’s described workflow processes the selected photos.
- Inspect the preview. Check whether the image is recognizable and whether important areas, color, and detail appear intact.
- Save only if the result meets your needs. Stellar says its evaluation download provides previews, but registration is required to save repaired images. The company also says the desktop program is read-only and does not modify original JPEG files. Stellar Repair for Photo product page
A preview is useful for judging a particular result; it is not evidence that every file will be repairable. Stellar’s manual describes incomplete repairs as possible, including missing image areas or color loss. When Advanced Repair needs a sample photo
For severely corrupted JPEGs, Stellar’s Advanced Repair instructions call for a working sample image captured by the same device and saved in the same format as the damaged photo. Stellar says the sample can provide information such as file type, resolution, ISO, and device. The support instructions describe this method for JPEGs of the same format; they do not establish it as a remedy for every supported file type. Repair is not the same as recovering a deleted photo
Stellar says its standard repair product does not recover lost or deleted JPEG files. Repair applies when a damaged file still exists; recovery is the separate problem of finding a file that has been deleted or lost from storage. Stellar points to another edition for recovery and repair, but that does not establish that a missing photo can be recovered in a particular case. Stellar Repair for Photo product page
Desktop software and the online repair service have different limits
Stellar’s browser-based repair service is separate from its desktop product. Its online page lists JPG/JPEG, HEIC, TIFF/TIF, RAW, and multiple camera formats, and says the free online plan allows one file up to 20 MB. How to decide whether to try it
- The file is present but damaged: a repair tool is relevant. If the photo was deleted or is missing, the issue is recovery instead.
- Your format and output needs match: check Stellar’s supported-format list, and decide whether JPEG output is acceptable for a RAW original.
- You can assess the actual preview: look for missing regions, color changes, or a thumbnail-sized result before deciding to save.
- You have the Advanced Repair prerequisite, if needed: severe JPEG cases may require a working same-device, same-format sample image.
- The relevant edition fits your file: the online free-plan limit is one file up to 20 MB; the Windows product has separate published specifications.
Stellar publishes a current product version and workflow, but the sources cited here do not provide an independently measured repair-success rate or a head-to-head comparison with competing applications. Treat the preview of your own file—not a general promise—as the practical basis for deciding whether a repair is usable.
