Lightmatter has unveiled a production-validation optical switch tray that targets up to 204.8 terabits per second (Tbps) of scale-up switching bandwidth in a single 1 rack unit (1RU). Announced at the Open Compute Project (OCP) Global Summit on October 12, 2026, the Open Rack design combines Lightmatter’s Passage co-packaged-optics (CPO) engines with liquid-cooled Guide DR laser modules. It is an AI-infrastructure platform, not a retail networking switch, and no price or general shipping date has been announced.
What Lightmatter announced
The system is an Open Rack CPO switch tray developed with Flex. Lightmatter describes it as a production-validation system designed to deliver as much as 204.8 Tbps of optical scale-up switching bandwidth in 1RU. The company says that density brings the optical bandwidth normally spread across a two-to-four-rack-unit design into one tray.

Scale-up switching links processors and accelerators inside an AI system. Those links must move data between tightly coupled compute devices with very high bandwidth and low overhead. The announcement therefore targets the internal network of an AI factory rather than general-purpose Ethernet switching for offices or data-center edge racks.
How 204.8 Tbps fits in 1RU
Eight Passage photonic engines
The tray integrates eight Passage CPO BiDi engines in a liquid-cooled chassis. Passage is Lightmatter’s three-dimensional photonic interconnect platform. Its product documentation lists Passage L200 CPO variants with 32 Tbps and 64 Tbps of aggregate bandwidth, while Passage L20 is listed at 12.8 Tbps. Those product figures describe individual Passage variants; the new tray’s 204.8 Tbps figure is Lightmatter’s system-level maximum for the complete switch design.

Guide DR laser modules
Guide DR is a liquid-cooled Laser Network Interface Card (LNIC) form factor intended to fit dozens of lasers into an OCP NIC 3.0-sized module. Lightmatter says one Guide DR module is designed to drive up to 51.2 Tbps of aggregate CPO or NPO scale-up bandwidth. Four modules at that stated capacity total 204.8 Tbps, which is the basis of the 1RU claim in the company’s Guide DR material.
The laser modules and photonic engines are integrated into a liquid-cooled chassis. Liquid cooling allows the design to handle the laser and optical power density without allocating the height of a larger air-cooled or multi-rack-unit enclosure. The announcement does not publish temperatures, flow rates, power draw, or an independent thermal test.

Detachable optical connections
For serviceability, Lightmatter says it developed a detachable optical connector with SENKO. The interface incorporates SENKO’s SEAT and Metallic Pic Coupler technologies. A detachable connection is significant for CPO deployments because optical engines are integrated close to switching silicon; being able to remove or replace an optical interface can simplify servicing compared with permanently fixed fiber assemblies. The announcement does not specify a field-replacement procedure, insertion-cycle rating, or connector loss budget.
Why rack density matters for AI factories
As accelerator clusters grow, scale-up fabrics can be limited by more than switch-chip throughput. Designers must also fit optical I/O ports, lasers, cooling hardware, fiber routes and front-panel connectors into a finite rack envelope. A design that delivers the same optical capacity in 1RU can leave more rack space for compute, reduce the number of chassis and shorten internal fiber paths.

- Bandwidth: up to 204.8 Tbps is the published maximum for the complete 1RU tray.
- Laser count and power: Guide DR concentrates the laser network interface in an OCP NIC 3.0-sized liquid-cooled module.
- Cooling: the switch tray and laser modules use liquid cooling; the sources do not state the required coolant infrastructure or facility-side capacity.
- Fiber and panel density: fewer rack units can mean less front-panel and fiber-routing space, although Lightmatter has not published a port map or fiber count.
- Serviceability: the detachable vClick optical interface is intended to make a CPO deployment more serviceable.
The surrounding rack-scale architecture
Lightmatter’s October announcement also showed a separate 2RU XPU tray containing four accelerators and 102.4 Tbps of optical scale-up bandwidth. That tray is context for the intended Open Rack system: compute trays and the high-density optical switch are designed as coordinated building blocks for accelerator-to-accelerator communication. The 102.4 Tbps figure belongs to the separate XPU tray, not to the 1RU switch.

Is the 204.8 Tbps switch available to buy?
There is no reported retail SKU, public price, customer order process or ordinary buyer availability for this exact tray. Lightmatter presented it as a production-validation system at the October 2026 OCP summit. The published material also does not provide a shipping date, independent customer deployment or third-party benchmark.

Organizations evaluating the design would need to engage Lightmatter and its integration ecosystem directly to establish qualification status, rack and liquid-cooling requirements, optical topology, service procedures, software compatibility and delivery terms.
