1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChanging a SIM card does not move or erase an RCS chat archive, and changing phones does not automatically transfer it. Chat history and RCS service registration are separate: a backup or device-to-device transfer may move Google Messages data to a new Android phone, while RCS must separately connect and, if needed, verify your number. Check the old phone’s backup before switching, restore during setup, and keep the old device available until you have checked the result.
What changes—and what does not
RCS (Rich Communication Services) is a messaging service, not a location where all your conversations are necessarily stored. In Google Messages, RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data for features such as typing indicators and read receipts. Google says phone numbers, device identifiers and SIM card numbers can be used for delivery and continuity. That role in connecting a device to the service is different from preserving the message history stored on a phone or included in a backup. Google’s RCS FAQ describes the service and its delivery information; Android backup guidance describes how messages may be restored.

So the outcome depends on what you change. A new SIM in the same phone usually leaves the existing on-device conversation history in place, though RCS may need to reconnect or verify the number. A new phone requires a supported restore or transfer to bring over history; getting RCS working on that phone does not itself restore old conversations. These details apply to Google Messages on Android and should not be assumed to describe every carrier’s RCS service, messaging app, or cross-platform migration.

Before you switch phones
Do not erase, trade in or reset the old phone until you have checked the backup or completed the transfer and confirmed that the expected messages appear on the new device. Google lists SMS and MMS in Android backup and includes RCS messages when you use Google Messages. This is a backup capability, not a promise that every device transfer will be complete. Google says restoration varies by phone and Android version. Review Google’s Android backup and restore guidance for the current description of what is included.

- Check the old phone’s backup. Open Android Settings > Google > Backup; wording can vary by phone. Review the backup details and confirm that backup is enabled and current. Make sure you use Google Messages if you expect its RCS messages to be included.
- Choose a transfer route. During new-phone setup, use the restore option offered for your Google backup or the device-to-device transfer option available on your phones. The precise screens and available choices vary by device.
- Keep the old phone available. Leave it intact until the setup restore or transfer has finished and you have checked the new phone’s message history. A transfer may take time; Google says the restore process can take up to 24 hours, though that is an upper bound in its guidance, not a guaranteed duration for every phone.
If you already switched without checking, do not assume that seeing the same phone number or a connected RCS status means the archive is present. Check the new phone’s conversations and determine whether the old device or a backup is still available before resetting anything else. Google’s community guide, published April 25, 2025, says that if backup was not on before the reset or switch and the old phone is unavailable, messages are likely unretrievable. It also says the full backup is restored rather than allowing a text-message-only selection. Treat that guide as supporting detail; the Android backup help page is Google’s primary operational reference. Read the Google Messages restoration guide.
Restoring messages to a new Android phone
Restoration is associated with the new phone’s setup or device-transfer flow, not with inserting a SIM. If you are still setting up the phone, use the available restore or transfer option. If setup is already complete, the documentation cited here does not establish one universal RCS-only import process that works across Android manufacturers and versions. Available options can depend on the phone and Android version, so check the device’s setup and backup guidance rather than assuming that reinstalling Google Messages will download the archive.

Version compatibility and incomplete transfers
Google says a newer Android device may restore from a device running the same or an older Android version. Restoring to a phone running an older Android version can result in an incomplete transfer. In other words, a successful setup flow is not proof that every message moved. Review the conversations you need on the new phone before wiping the source device, especially if the new phone is running an older version than the old one. The precise restore behavior varies by phone and Android version, so Google does not establish a single guaranteed outcome for every model.

When the old phone or backup is missing
If neither the old device nor a usable backup is available, do not expect RCS registration to reconstruct old chats. Google’s community guide says messages are likely unretrievable in that situation. The official guidance cited here does not document a universal RCS-only export/import path, and it does not establish that third-party SMS backup apps preserve RCS conversations. Avoid relying on an unverified tool as a substitute for a backup or transfer made before the switch.

If you changed only the SIM card
With the same phone, changing the SIM is not the same as moving the phone’s stored conversations. The existing on-device history is a separate matter from whether Google Messages can register RCS using the new SIM and current carrier setup. A changed SIM, number or carrier configuration may cause the service to reconnect or request number verification. Check the RCS status in Google Messages and follow any verification prompt; the SIM itself is not documented as a store of the chat archive. Google’s RCS setup instructions explain status and verification.
Google says certain information used for delivery—including phone number, device identifiers and SIM card number—may be stored for about a month to help keep users connected, including when temporarily offline. That statement concerns delivery information, not the retention period for message contents or chat history. It should not be read as a promise that conversations remain recoverable for a month after a SIM or phone change. See the RCS FAQ’s explanation of delivery information.

Getting RCS working again on the new setup
Once you have handled the message transfer, check service registration separately. Google says RCS may be provided by Google or by a mobile carrier, and availability varies by device, carrier and region. In Google Messages, open the profile or settings menu and choose RCS chats. The exact path can vary by app version. Status may show connected, connecting, trouble connecting or awaiting retry, or not supported. If number verification is underway, Google may send an SMS, so the phone needs to be able to receive SMS messages. If the carrier does not support or has disabled RCS, carrier support may be needed. Check Google’s current RCS status and setup guidance.
- Open Google Messages and go to profile/settings > RCS chats.
- Read the displayed status. If verification is requested, follow the in-app prompt and make sure the phone can receive the verification SMS.
- If the status remains unavailable, check whether RCS is supported by your carrier, device and region; contact the carrier if its support or provisioning may be the issue.
- After connection, send a test message to a contact who can use RCS and inspect the compose or send indicator to see whether the conversation is using RCS, SMS or MMS.
Avoid repeatedly switching RCS off and on as a troubleshooting shortcut. Google says this is not advised and warns that disabling and re-enabling RCS can remove a user from group chats. If status is stuck connecting or retrying, follow the in-app guidance and allow verification to resolve rather than cycling the setting. Google’s RCS help page includes this caution.

What SMS or MMS fallback means
If RCS is unavailable, Google Messages can send messages as SMS or MMS, depending on settings and recipient support. RCS uses Wi-Fi or mobile data; SMS and MMS are delivered through the mobile operator. A conversation may therefore continue even while RCS-specific features—such as read receipts or typing indicators—are not available. A message sent by SMS/MMS is not evidence that old RCS history was restored, just as a connected RCS status is not evidence that all history moved. Google’s RCS FAQ and security information about RCS chats describe the service distinction.
Encryption after an app or operating-system change
Eligible RCS conversations between Google Messages users are end-to-end encrypted. Google says changing messaging apps or operating systems can temporarily affect whether a conversation is eligible, and Google Messages may take time to detect that change. As a result, some messages may initially not appear or may arrive in an unreadable encrypted form. This caveat is about app or operating-system changes; it does not mean that changing a SIM card alone removes encryption. Google’s encryption help explains eligibility and its RCS security page describes how RCS chats are protected.
If an encrypted message is unreadable after an app or operating-system change, update Google Messages and Carrier Services where applicable, then ask the other participant to resend the message if it remains inaccessible. Do not treat the resend as recovery of an earlier message archive; it supplies a new copy of that message.
Quick Recap
What you can safely expect
- A SIM change is not a chat-history transfer. It can affect service registration, but it does not by itself move an archive to another phone.
- For Google Messages on Android, RCS messages can be part of Android backup. Recovery depends on having a usable backup or completing a device transfer during setup.
- A working RCS connection and restored history are two different checks. Verify both on the new phone.
- Transfer completeness is not guaranteed across all phones and Android versions; restoring to an older Android version can be incomplete.
- Google’s roughly one-month note refers to delivery identifiers, not message contents. Google’s up-to-24-hour restore note refers to the restore process, not the age of a backup or a promise of success.
