The Libre Computer Alta (AML-A311D-CC) is a Cottonwood single-board computer built around a six-core Amlogic A311D processor, a manufacturer-rated 5 TOPS AI accelerator, and a four-lane MIPI CSI camera interface. It is a plausible platform to evaluate for edge-vision prototypes, but the 5 TOPS figure is a specification—not proof of performance with a particular model, camera, or software stack.
What the Alta is—and what its AI rating means
Alta refers here to Libre Computer’s AML-A311D-CC single-board computer, not the separately cataloged Alta compute module. The board has 2GB or 4GB of LPDDR4 memory. Libre Computer rates its AI accelerator at 5 TOPS and describes it as having one general-purpose core, four tensor cores, and eight neuro cores. Those are the manufacturer’s specifications; they do not establish inference speed, supported model formats, or performance on a specific computer-vision workload. Libre Computer’s Alta product page does not supply an independent vision benchmark or a comparable test against competing boards.

The A311D’s CPU comprises four ARM Cortex-A73 cores at 2.016GHz and two Cortex-A53 cores at 1.8GHz. Graphics are handled by a Mali-G52 MP4 GPU; the manufacturer lists OpenGL ES 1.1, 2.0 and 3.2, Vulkan 1.1, and OpenCL 2.0 support. CPU, GPU, and AI acceleration are distinct resources, so the accelerator’s TOPS rating alone is not a complete measure of application performance.
Camera and peripheral connections
For camera projects, the key board-level feature is a four-lane MIPI CSI interface paired with a dual camera ISP. This confirms camera-oriented hardware connectivity, but not that every sensor, cable, driver, or vision framework will work. The product page does not identify a tested camera module or cable. Check the exact sensor and software path before choosing parts.

These interface listings do not guarantee compatibility with a particular peripheral, carrier, or accessory. Verify connector, pinout, driver, and power requirements for the components in your build.
Software support: check the accelerator path, not just the OS name
Libre Computer lists upstream Linux and U-Boot support, UEFI, and images or distributions including Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Raspbian, Lakka, CoreELEC, LibreELEC, Android (AOSP), and Armbian. The manufacturer directs users to board-specific discussion when selecting builds. Availability of an operating-system image does not mean that every image exposes the AI accelerator or provides identical camera and peripheral support.

Libre Computer states that the board has 20 years of software support. The product page does not define the term’s start and end dates or service terms, so treat it as a manufacturer lifecycle statement rather than a precisely dated support commitment.
Power, size, and storage considerations
Libre Computer publishes power figures of 10W at full load, 7.5W at typical load, under 1.5W at idle, and under 0.3W in wake-ready mode. The product page does not state test conditions; these are manufacturer-published figures, not independent measurements or a guarantee of consumption in a particular enclosure or workload. Confirm that the supply and thermal setup suit your intended use.

The manufacturer also catalogs the Solitude AML-S905D3-CC, a lower-priced Cottonwood board listed with a 1.2 TOPS NPU and MIPI CSI/DSI. The ratings are manufacturer specifications, not results from a common benchmark, so the numbers do not establish a proportional performance difference. Compare the actual CPU and GPU needs, memory configuration, interfaces, software path, power requirements, and current price for your project rather than choosing on TOPS alone. Quick Recap
- Alta is worth evaluating if your design needs its listed camera interface, accelerator, memory option, or I/O and you can confirm the camera and software stack you need.
- Pause before buying if the project depends on a specific camera sensor, AI framework, model, or measured frame rate that you have not verified on this board.
- Choose the memory variant deliberately: the listed options are 2GB and 4GB LPDDR4; the product page does not claim a workload-specific memory recommendation.
