There are documented cases of people using Omegle to groom, deceive, secretly record, and threaten victims—but the available official records do not establish that bots carried out these incidents or how often automation was involved. Omegle shut down in November 2023. The underlying risks—deception, recording, and sextortion—can still arise in other online stranger-chat settings.
What is documented about Omegle scams?
Official case records describe exploitation linked to Omegle, but they do not substantiate the specific claim that “scam bots” were responsible. The distinction matters: these records show real abuse, not the prevalence of bots or a single automated scheme.

Grooming and threats
A U.S. Attorney’s Office case account describes a minor being groomed through Omegle and Snapchat and threatened. The FBI also described historical allegations against an Indiana man involving fake webcam software, secret recording, and threats on Omegle and other anonymous video-chat sites. These are case-specific records; allegations should not be generalized into a claim about all Omegle users or bots. U.S. Attorney’s Office, Southern District of Indiana; FBI case release.

The FBI says sextortion may start with deception or an ordinary-seeming interaction. An offender may capture sexual material during a video call, then demand money, images, or sexual activity while threatening exposure. The FBI cautions that images may still be distributed after payment. FBI sextortion guidance; FBI guidance on financially motivated sextortion.

Is Omegle still available?
No. Australia’s eSafety Commissioner recorded Omegle’s shutdown in November 2023. In a 10 November 2023 statement, eSafety said Omegle had reported having three video-chat moderators and one text moderator, and as many as 40,000 simultaneous users. Those figures were attributed to Omegle’s response to a legal notice; they were not an independent audit or a measure of how many people faced risk. eSafety Commissioner statement.
Closure did not erase historical cases or end investigations into past conduct. In January 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York announced a 12-year sentence in a case involving historical communications through Omegle, Skype, and Instagram. What do I do if this is happening to me?
You are not to blame for someone else’s deception, recording, or threats. Seek help from a trusted person and report the threat to local law enforcement. If you are in the United States, you can also contact the FBI; where a minor is involved, the FBI’s guidance points to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Reporting can help authorities respond, but it cannot guarantee a particular outcome. The FBI says, “Cooperating with the predator rarely stops the blackmail and harassment—but law enforcement can.” FBI sextortion guidance; FBI financial sextortion guidance.
- Do not pay or send more images. Payment may not stop distribution, and the FBI warns that paid offers to help with sextortion or remove images can be another attempt to victimize you.
- Save relevant evidence if it is safe. Keep account names, messages, payment demands, and links that may help a report. Do not put yourself at risk to collect evidence.
- Get support promptly. Tell a trusted adult or another person you trust, especially if you are a minor or feel in immediate danger.
- Use image-removal tools where relevant. The FBI points to Take It Down for images taken when the person was under 18 and StopNCII for adults. Neither service should be understood as a guarantee that every copy will be removed everywhere.
How can I help someone else who is in this situation?
Listen without blaming or pressuring them. Help them reach a trusted adult, local law enforcement, or the FBI; if a minor is involved, help them find the appropriate support through the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. Offer to help preserve relevant messages and account details if it is safe, and do not pay the person making threats or a company promising guaranteed removal.

How can people reduce exposure in video chats?
The FBI advises turning devices and webcams off when they are not in use. A physical webcam cover can help block the lens while the camera is idle, but it cannot prevent recording during an active call or stop coercion, threats, or screen capture. No camera setting can replace caution about what to share or seeking help if someone uses material to threaten you.
