Li-Fi vs. Wi-Fi: Which Is Better for You?

IEEE has standardized light communications in the 802.11 family, but its PHY rate range is not a real-world Wi-Fi comparison. Choose based on compatible equipment and evidence for your coverage needs.

Neither Li-Fi nor Wi-Fi is established as the universal winner. IEEE has standardized light communications within the 802.11 family, but a standard’s maximum physical-layer rate does not show how a particular Li-Fi product performs against a particular Wi-Fi router. The practical choice depends on the coverage you need, which devices you can connect, and what equipment is actually available for your setup.

What is the difference between Li-Fi and Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is wireless local-area networking in the IEEE 802.11 family. Li-Fi uses light for wireless communication. IEEE 802.11bb-2023 brings light communications into that same standards family: it specifies physical-layer (PHY) operation in the 800–1000 nm band. That is the band specified for the standard, not a claim that every Li-Fi implementation uses visible room lighting.

The amendment specifies bidirectional operation and says it facilitates interoperability among solid-state light sources with different modulation bandwidths. That interoperability language concerns light sources; it does not mean that any Wi-Fi phone, laptop, or router can connect to any Li-Fi equipment.

IEEE 802.11-2024 is an active revision incorporating amendments published from 2021 through 2024, and its listing identifies 802.11bb as light communications. See the IEEE 802.11bb-2023 listing and the IEEE 802.11-2024 listing.

  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Does Li-Fi have faster speeds than Wi-Fi?

IEEE 802.11bb-2023 specifies a PHY throughput range of 10 Mb/s to 9.6 Gb/s, measured at the MAC data service access point. This is a standards-defined range, not a household speed test, guaranteed customer rate, or comparison with a particular Wi-Fi product. Real-world rates depend on the equipment and deployment, so the figure alone cannot establish which technology will be faster for you.

A fair speed comparison would require identified Li-Fi and Wi-Fi products tested under comparable conditions. The standard and product-level evidence cited here do not provide that head-to-head result. The IEEE Xplore record for IEEE 802.11bb-2023 gives the amendment’s publication date as 10 November 2023.

  • Connect more devices than ever before - Wi-Fi 6 technology simultaneously communicates more data to more devices using OFDMA and MU-MIMO while reducing lag dramatically
  • Powerful Dual-Core 900MHz Processor – Handles multiple data streams simultaneously for reliable performance across your devices. Ensures smooth streaming, online gaming, and video conferencing without buffering or lag.

Which is better for coverage and moving around?

The available standards information does not provide measured comparisons of coverage, signal performance through building materials, or roaming between access points. It therefore does not support a blanket claim that one technology covers more area, works better through walls, or handles movement better.

For a specific installation, look for coverage and mobility results for the actual access point, client devices, and building layout. If those results are unavailable, the standard’s PHY range cannot fill that gap.

Will your devices work with Li-Fi?

Do not assume existing Wi-Fi devices support Li-Fi. The 802.11bb interoperability statement is not evidence of universal compatibility, and the standards listings do not establish which consumer devices or products are currently available. Before choosing a Li-Fi setup, confirm that the access point and client transceiver are designed to work together and that the devices you plan to use are supported.

How should you choose?

  • Start with your devices: Check whether the equipment you own or plan to buy supports the intended wireless connection. Do not infer compatibility from the 802.11 family name alone.
  • Match the technology to the space: Ask vendors for product-specific coverage, mobility, and installation information for your layout; the standard does not settle those questions.
  • Compare actual equipment: Use comparable performance evidence for named products, not a standards maximum on one side and a consumer router’s advertised or measured rate on the other.
  • Verify availability: Confirm that the required Li-Fi access point and compatible client transceiver can be obtained for your use before treating Li-Fi as a practical option.
