Usually, no: connecting a cable line directly to an LG TV does not unlock encrypted subscription channels. The TV’s tuner may receive channels the cable provider sends unencrypted, but encrypted channels need a compatible, provider-authorized CableCARD or CI/CAM setup—or the provider’s set-top box. Which option works depends on your LG model, country, and cable provider.
Why direct coax does not unlock encrypted channels
A coaxial cable carries the provider’s signal to the TV; it does not authorize a subscription or decrypt protected channels. A channel scan can find channels the TV is able to receive, but it cannot replace the provider’s conditional-access equipment. LG documents cable-tuning controls on some older webOS TVs, but that guidance does not say those controls decode encrypted channels: LG’s channel-scan instructions.

So, connecting coax directly may be enough for channels transmitted in a format the TV supports and without encryption. It is not a reliable way to watch the full paid cable lineup without an authorized decoder.

Can a CableCARD replace the box?
On certain legacy LG TVs, yes. LG’s manual says that when the provider registers the CableCARD ID and Host ID, the set can display subscribed scrambled channels. The manual states: “If your cable TV service provider registers the CableCARD™ ID and Host ID, you can watch premium or high value channel.” LG’s legacy TV manual.

This is not proof that a particular TV or provider supports CableCARD today. Check the exact model and ask the provider whether it still provisions a compatible card for your service before buying one.
Could a CI or CAM module work?
Some LG models support a Common Interface (CI) slot and a compatible CAM (conditional-access module). LG describes this as a way to watch some encrypted pay services, but says CI is available only on certain models and depends on the country’s broadcasting arrangements. The module must meet the applicable DVB-CI or CI+ requirements, and the provider must confirm that its system and any required smart card are compatible. See LG’s CI information guide.

Do not assume that a CAM advertised for another country or TV will work with a U.S. cable subscription. Ask the provider to confirm compatibility for your specific set and channels.

How to connect a provider’s box
- Connect the provider-authorized set-top box to the cable service as directed by the provider.
- Connect the box’s HDMI output to an HDMI input on the LG TV.
- Turn on both devices, then select the TV’s external input that matches the HDMI port. LG’s guidance is to connect the set-top box by HDMI and select it as the active external input: LG’s external-device connection instructions.
What to check before buying anything
- Find the full LG TV model number, usually on the rear label or in the TV’s settings, and note your country.
- Ask the cable provider which authorized equipment supports that exact model and the channels you want.
- If considering CableCARD or CI/CAM, ask whether the provider currently provisions it for your service and what module or standard is required.
- If the provider does not confirm a compatible card or module, use its approved set-top box rather than buying a generic adapter.
Can LG Channels provide cable channels without a box?
LG Channels is a separate, internet-based live-TV service for supported LG smart TVs and monitors. LG’s support page lists availability in the United States and requires an internet connection: LG Channels: what to know. It does not decrypt a cable provider’s encrypted channels or substitute for your cable subscription.
