LFS258 kubeadm ImagePull Error for kube-apiserver:v1.29.1: What to Check

The LFS258 report’s kube-apiserver pull failed during an HTTPS manifest request with a connection reset. Here’s how to distinguish network access, image configuration, and the separate pause-image warning.

If kubeadm init fails to pull registry.k8s.io/kube-apiserver:v1.29.1 with connection reset by peer, the reported failure is a network connection reset during an HTTPS manifest request—not proof that the image tag is missing. The July 2024 LFS258 forum post does not identify the cause or confirm a successful workaround. Use the checks below to distinguish registry connectivity from image naming, mirror configuration, and a separate pause-image warning.

What happened in the LFS258 report?

On 18 July 2024, an LFS258 learner reported following the course PDF instructions for Lab 3.1 while setting up a Kubernetes control-plane node. Their command was kubeadm init --config=kubeadm-config.yaml --upload-certs | tee kubeadm-init.out. The VM ran Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS in an office lab, and kubeadm reported Kubernetes v1.29.1.

During preflight image pulling, the container runtime failed to resolve registry.k8s.io/kube-apiserver:v1.29.1. The logged HTTP HEAD request for the manifest ended with read: connection reset by peer; the error also showed an asia-south1-docker.pkg.dev backing endpoint. Similar reset messages appeared for kube-controller-manager. This establishes that the manifest request failed during a network exchange. It does not establish whether a firewall, proxy, route, TLS inspection, DNS issue, or another condition caused the reset, nor does it show that the image tag was absent.

The post lists these requested images: registry.k8s.io/kube-apiserver:v1.29.1, kube-controller-manager:v1.29.1, kube-scheduler:v1.29.1, kube-proxy:v1.29.1, coredns/coredns:v1.11.1, pause:3.9, and etcd:3.5.12-0.

How to diagnose the image-pull failure

1. Generate the image list from the same kubeadm configuration

First confirm what the intended configuration asks kubeadm to use. Kubernetes documents kubeadm config images list and kubeadm config images pull for listing and pulling the required images. Run these with the same configuration file intended for initialization, so the selected Kubernetes version and image repository are consistent:

kubeadm config images list --config=kubeadm-config.yaml
kubeadm config images pull --config=kubeadm-config.yaml

Compare the output with the failed image reference. A connection reset points to a different class of problem than an unknown image or tag. Kubernetes also notes that image tags identify versions, while digests can identify immutable image content; do not substitute a different tag or path merely because a pull failed. See Kubernetes Documentation: kubeadm init and Kubernetes Documentation: Images.

2. Preserve and inspect the full runtime error

Record the complete failing URL or endpoint, exact HTTP or TLS error, timestamp, and runtime message. “ImagePull” alone does not identify the failure mode. Check the container runtime’s logs around the failed request; the registry.k8s.io debugging guide describes investigating pull failures through runtime logs. The precise message helps separate a connection reset from DNS lookup failure, certificate validation, authentication, or a not-found response.

3. Check registry egress from the VM

Because the LFS258 message reports a reset while retrieving a manifest over HTTPS, ask the network administrator to check the VM’s outbound path. Relevant checks include outbound TCP port 443, required proxy settings, firewall policy, DNS resolution, and TLS inspection. The office-lab environment makes these reasonable diagnostic questions, but the forum post does not confirm any of them as the cause.

Run the checks from the affected VM and share the exact timestamp and endpoint with the network team. A pull that succeeds from another network does not by itself prove the image or tag is the issue; it points toward a difference in network path or policy that still needs to be identified.

4. Use an approved mirror only with matching kubeadm configuration

kubeadm defaults to registry.k8s.io, and its configuration supports an alternate imageRepository. If the network requires a mirror, configure that repository deliberately, then use the same kubeadm configuration to list and pull the images. Kubernetes warns that image paths at a custom repository can differ from the defaults, so a mirror must provide the paths kubeadm expects. Avoid ad hoc tag or path substitutions; stage images under the expected names and paths before running kubeadm init if your environment requires preloading them.

For installations without internet access, Kubernetes Documentation states: “For running kubeadm without an Internet connection you have to pre-pull the required control plane images.” The official kubeadm init documentation provides the image-listing and pre-pull commands.

What about the pause-image warning?

The post separately says the runtime sandbox image was registry.k8s.io/pause:3.8, while kubeadm recommended registry.k8s.io/pause:3.9. Treat this as a runtime configuration compatibility warning, not as an explanation for the TCP reset during the kube-apiserver manifest request. Align the runtime’s sandbox image with the pause image expected by the kubeadm version where appropriate, using the runtime’s configuration and restart procedure for that environment. The forum report does not show that changing it repaired the manifest pull.

Does the report establish a workaround?

No. The post records a failed pull and asks whether a workaround exists, but it does not document a confirmed fix. It is also a historical report from July 2024, not evidence of a current registry outage or a defect in Kubernetes v1.29.1 images. Diagnose the specific connection and configuration in the affected environment before changing image tags or treating the registry as unavailable.
