The paper calls the primary chain level 1. This is a model-specific mathematical definition, not a universal meaning of “level 2 chain.”
What does “level-2 chain” mean in the paper?
The definition appears in Definition 4 of De Carufel and Flocchini’s 2020 paper, Fault-induced dynamics of oblivious robots on a line. The authors state: “We say that a secondary chain is a level-2 chain.” The preceding conditions are essential: the secondary chain is mutual, its two anchors belong to the primary chain, and at least one of those anchors is non-faulty. What are the primary chain and its anchors?
Primary chain, or level 1
The paper designates the unique primary mutual chain in its robot configuration as level 1. It is the chain to which a level-2 chain’s anchors must belong.
Anchors and the non-faulty condition
The anchors are the two robots at the ends of a secondary chain that meet the paper’s relationship to the primary chain. At least one of these two robots—not merely some robot elsewhere in the configuration—must be non-faulty. The term “mutual chain” also has a specific structural meaning in the paper’s robot model; it should not be read as ordinary blockchain terminology.

Can a level-2 chain have different lengths?
Yes. Figure 7 in the paper shows two level-2 chains: one contains a single robot anchored at adjacent robots in the primary chain; the other contains three robots and is anchored at two more distant primary-chain robots. The examples illustrate that the definition does not impose one fixed length.
How does the paper use higher-level chains?
The authors extend the hierarchy recursively: a higher-level chain is a mutual chain whose two anchors belong to chains at adjacent levels. They prove convergence toward an equidistant configuration for each level-j chain under the model’s assumptions, and use this hierarchy in their argument for global convergence. This is a mathematical result within the stated model, not a report of physical robot trials.

Does “level 2 chain” mean the same thing in blockchain?
No single cross-field definition is established by these sources. Blockchain materials use similar language for different architectures. TOP AI Network, for example, describes level-2 sub-chains branching from level-1 chains in its infrastructure. A patent application about cooperating blockchain systems also warns that calling nested chains “layer 2” can be ambiguous, since readers may confuse nesting with off-chain scaling approaches such as payment channels or rollups. Those uses do not share the robotics paper’s anchor condition or its robot-convergence context. TOP AI Network Infrastructure · US20240297800A1.
If the phrase appears in a blockchain discussion, identify the protocol or architecture before assigning it a definition. The phrase by itself does not establish whether it refers to nested chains, an off-chain scaling system, or the robotics model described above.
