There is no universal TV-to-speaker distance. Place the front left and right speakers symmetrically around the screen, then position them so each sits about 22°–30° to either side of the center line from your primary listening seat. The right spacing depends on how far that seat is from the speakers.
Measure from the listening seat, not the TV edges
The useful reference point is the primary listening position—often the center seat—not the television’s width. Dolby’s home theater guidance places the front left and right speakers about 22°–30° from the forward center line at that seat. The speakers should form a balanced pair and be equally distant from the main seat. Dolby’s home theater setup guide notes that actual distance can vary with room size and speaker power.

Find the spacing for your room
- Mark the primary listening position and the midpoint of the TV.
- Imagine or mark a straight center line from the seat to the TV midpoint.
- Choose an angle between 22° and 30° on each side of that line. Use the same angle for both speakers.
- Place the speakers at the front of the viewing area, then measure from each speaker to the seat and adjust until those distances match.
For a quick estimate, let D be the horizontal distance from the listening seat to the line where the speakers will sit. Each speaker’s sideways offset from the center line is D × tan(angle); the total spacing between speakers is twice that offset. This is a geometric conversion of Dolby’s angle guidance, not a separate Dolby rule.

When the ideal layout does not fit
If furniture, walls, or a narrow room prevent the full recommended angle, preserve left/right symmetry and equal distance to the main seat first. Then move the pair as close to the 22°–30° range as the room allows. This is a practical compromise based on the cited geometry, not a separate published standard.

In Dolby’s professional setup guidance for a flat-panel monitor, left and right speakers sit beside the monitor, with the center speaker below or directly above it while keeping recommended vertical angles as close as possible.
