Put your Left 4 Dead 2 configuration in left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg and load it when the dedicated server starts with +exec server.cfg. A reliable baseline sets the server name, protects RCON, chooses public or private access, permits direct connections when desired, defines map rotation, keeps cheats disabled, and enables useful logs.

The settings below are for a current dedicated-server setup. They distinguish internet servers from LAN servers, explain how to force a mode such as co-op or versus, and show why a correct file can appear not to work when the wrong installation or launch command is being used.

server.cfg is a text file of console-variable assignments that the dedicated server executes during startup. It controls persistent policy—identity, passwords, access rules, map rotation, voice, file consistency, cheats, and logging. It does not replace the launch command: the command chooses the server instance and can select the first map and game mode.
Use plain text, one command per line. Lines beginning with // are comments and are ignored by the engine. Keep secrets out of screenshots, public repositories, and copied configuration examples.

Correct location and startup command
File path
Create or edit this file inside the dedicated server’s game directory:
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgOn Windows, this is the left4dead2cfgserver.cfg folder beneath the server installation. On GNU/Linux, use the corresponding left4dead2/cfg/server.cfg path beneath the directory where SteamCMD installed the server. The important part is that the file belongs to the same installation that your launch script starts.

Add +exec server.cfg to the dedicated-server command line. To start on a specific map and mode, add a map command as well:
+exec server.cfg +map c1m1_hotel coopThe map command is useful when you need the first match to be unambiguously co-op, versus, realism, survival, scavenge, or holdout. If the server starts a different map or mode than expected, verify the launch script, working directory, and executable before changing cvars.
Baseline server.cfg template
This is a practical starting point for a vanilla public server. Replace the hostname and RCON secret, then choose the privacy, consistency, and voice policies that fit your community.

Identity and access settings

RCON security
RCON is administrative access, not a player password. Generate a separate secret, do not reuse an account password, and limit who receives it. If you publish a configuration for others to copy, replace the real value with a clearly marked placeholder before sharing.
Public versus private play
For a public server, leave sv_password empty. For a private event, set a value and communicate it through a trusted channel. Changing the password in the file takes effect when the file is executed; restart or execute the configuration again after edits.
Internet, LAN, lobby-only, and direct joining
Internet visibility
Use sv_lan 0 for the normal internet-dedicated-server configuration. LAN mode changes how the server is advertised and how connections are authenticated, so it is not a cosmetic switch. If people outside your local network cannot see or join the server, check this value first, then verify the network and port configuration used by the host.
Allowing direct connections
sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 allows players to connect directly instead of requiring a matchmaking lobby. This is the setting to check when a server appears to accept lobby players but rejects a direct connection. Setting it to 1 restricts joining to lobby-originated connections.

Pausing policy
sv_pausable 0 prevents ordinary players from pausing the server. If your group needs deliberate tactical pauses, choose a policy and tell players who may use it rather than enabling it accidentally on a public instance.
Map rotation and game modes
Map cycle file
mapcyclefile "mapcycle.txt" tells the server which multiplayer rotation file to use. Keep the named file in the location expected by the game and make sure every map entry matches the installed content. A rotation file governs subsequent maps; it does not by itself guarantee the mode of the first map.
Forcing the starting mode
Specify both a map and a mode in the launch command when the mode matters:

Use the mode value supported by the map and content installed on the server. If a rotation changes mode unexpectedly, inspect the map-cycle entries and any add-on or management script that executes commands after server.cfg.

Cheats, file consistency, and mods
Cheats
Keep sv_cheats 0 on a normal public server. Enabling cheats changes gameplay and can undermine a public community’s expectations. Reserve nonzero values for controlled testing or private sessions, and return the value to zero before reopening the server.

Consistency checks
sv_consistency and sv_pure determine how strictly the server checks client files. A stricter policy can block players whose files do not match the server’s expectations; a looser policy may be necessary for a modded community but can permit a wider range of altered content.
The baseline uses sv_consistency 1 and leaves sv_pure 2 commented as an optional stricter policy. Do not copy either value blindly into a heavily modded server. Decide which add-ons are required, test a clean client and an approved modded client, and publish the rule so players know why a join is refused.
Logging and voice communication
Operational logs
sv_logfile 1enables server information logging, which helps diagnose startup, map, and connection problems.sv_logbans 1records bans, giving administrators an audit trail for enforcement actions.
Logs are useful only if you know where the running instance writes them. When several installations exist, compare timestamps and paths so you are not reading an old server’s log.
Voice rules
sv_voiceenable 1 enables in-game voice communication. With sv_alltalk 0, voice remains restricted by team context. Set sv_alltalk 1 only when you intentionally want players on opposing teams to hear one another. Cross-team voice is often appropriate for a private event or administration, but it changes the information available in versus play.
Networking and the tickrate caveat
Do not advertise a guaranteed 100-tick L4D2 server simply by adding -tickrate 100. Valve Developer Community guidance says the -tickrate command-line parameter is unavailable in newer builds of Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 and was disabled because changing tickrate can cause timing problems in some games. In other words, a launch flag is not a reliable tuning switch for current L4D2 servers.
The same guidance describes sv_minrate and sv_maxrate as controls for limiting client-requested data rates. Treat rate values as deployment-specific: choose them only after considering your host’s bandwidth, the player base, and the rest of the server’s networking configuration. The available documentation does not establish a universal value or a latency guarantee.
Installing the dedicated server and avoiding the wrong-instance problem
The cited setup procedure uses SteamCMD application ID 222860. Installation instructions cover both Windows and GNU/Linux. Regardless of operating system, keep the installation directory, configuration file, launch script, and logs associated with the same instance.
- Install or update the dedicated server with SteamCMD app ID
222860. - Open that installation’s
left4dead2/cfgdirectory. - Create
server.cfgas plain text and paste the settings you have selected. - Set a unique RCON secret and decide whether
sv_passwordshould be empty. - Launch the same installation with
+exec server.cfg, adding+mapand a mode when required. - Join from a client, check the displayed hostname, test the intended access path, and inspect the newest log for confirmation.
Port selection and update scripts are deployment concerns rather than server.cfg cvars. A server can have a perfect configuration file and still be unreachable if the launch script points to another directory, the selected port is unavailable, or the host’s network rules do not permit the connection.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The hostname or password did not change
- Confirm the file is exactly
left4dead2/cfg/server.cfgfor the running instance. - Confirm the launch command contains
+exec server.cfg. - Check for a second startup script or management layer that executes another configuration afterward.
- Restart or execute the edited file after saving it; an already running server will not automatically reread every change.
Players can join only through a lobby
Set sv_allow_lobby_connect_only 0 and verify that the server is not being started with a later command that reverses it. Test a direct connection separately from a lobby invitation.
Internet players cannot find the server
Verify sv_lan 0, confirm the launch script uses the intended port, and check the host’s firewall and port-forwarding rules. A LAN-only value or a port mismatch can make a healthy process invisible from outside the local network.

Put the desired mode on the same +map command, for example +map c1m1_hotel coop. Then inspect mapcycle.txt and add-ons for commands that run after startup and change the mode.
Modded clients are rejected
Review sv_consistency and sv_pure as a deliberate pair. Compare the server’s approved files with the client’s add-ons, test with a clean client, and document which files are required. Do not weaken checks merely to hide an unknown mismatch.
