A CFL may still suit an existing compatible fixture, but it contains mercury, so its disposal needs extra care. The right choice also depends on the bulb’s light output, color, base, dimmer, and fixture.
LED vs. CFL: the main differences
| Factor | LED | CFL |
|---|---|---|
| Energy use | Generally lower for the same light output. Compare watts only after matching lumens. | Generally uses more electricity than an LED for the same light output. |
| Typical useful life | DOE says good-quality white LED products are expected to last 30,000 to 50,000 operating hours or longer. | A comparable CFL typically lasts 8,000 to 10,000 operating hours, according to DOE. |
| Mercury | Does not contain mercury. | Contains mercury; follow local collection or recycling guidance when disposing of it. |
| Compatibility | Check base, shape, dimmer compatibility, and any enclosed-fixture restrictions on the specific product. | Check base and fixture compatibility. CFLs may be integrated, with the ballast built in, or non-integrated, with a separate ballast. |
These are general product comparisons, not guarantees for a particular bulb. DOE notes that LED efficiency, color quality, dimmability, and useful life vary by product. DOE’s LED overview explains its expected-life measure and comparison with CFLs.

Which bulb lasts longer?
LEDs generally last longer. DOE gives an expected useful life of 30,000 to 50,000 hours or more for good-quality white LED lighting products, compared with a typical 8,000 to 10,000 hours for a comparable CFL. These are operating-hour estimates, not guarantees or calendar-year promises: how long a bulb lasts in your home depends on how often it is used and on the product itself.

An electronic component failure or an unacceptable shift in color can also make a bulb unsuitable before that point.

Which bulb saves more on electricity?
For the same brightness, an LED generally uses less electricity than a CFL. Match light output first, then compare watts: watts measure electrical input, while lumens measure the light produced. A lower wattage at the same lumen output means lower power use.
Use a like-for-like cost comparison
To estimate your household’s costs, use each bulb’s purchase price, wattage, expected operating hours, your electricity rate, and rated life. Include replacement frequency as well as electricity; a bulb that costs more upfront may need fewer replacements, but the result depends on the products and your usage.

For context, the U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) lists an 800-lumen comparison with a best-available model at 5.5 W and $2.12 in annual energy cost, an ENERGY STAR example at 11 W and $4.25, and a less-efficient example at 18 W and $6.95. These are model values in a federal-facility scenario, not a guaranteed LED-versus-CFL saving for a home. The annual figures assume electricity at $0.099/kWh, 10.7 hours of use per day, and a rated life of 25,000 hours; product-performance columns draw on a June 2023 list. How to choose brightness and color
Match brightness by lumens
Look at lumens rather than trying to match a new bulb’s wattage to an old incandescent’s. DOE’s lighting guide uses 1,100 lumens as an efficient replacement brightness for a traditional 75-watt bulb. That is a brightness guide, not a claim that every replacement at that output has the same power use. DOE’s guide to energy-efficient lighting explains lumens and watts.

- LONG LASTING PERFORMANCE: These LED bulbs offer a 10,000 hour lifespan, providing lasting illumination for over 9 years (based on 3 hours of use each day), helping minimize replacements
- GREAT ATMOSPHERE: Enjoy daylight white light bulbs that create a bright, crisp atmosphere for any room
- STANDARD FIT: The E26 standard base provides compatibility with most fixtures, making it easy to install these LED bulbs in lamps and overhead lighting
Choose the color appearance you want
Color temperature is measured in kelvins (K): lower values look warmer or yellower, while higher values look cooler or bluer. Color rendering is a different measure of how faithfully a light shows colors. DOE recommends a color rendering index (CRI) of at least 80 for interior lighting and describes CRI 90 or higher as excellent color fidelity, while noting that CRI is an imperfect measure. Check the package for both color temperature and CRI rather than assuming all LEDs look alike. More information is available in DOE’s LED selection guidance.
Check the bulb and fixture before buying
- Choose the needed brightness. Match the fixture’s intended light level using lumens.
- Select the light color. Use the bulb’s Kelvin rating to choose a warmer or cooler appearance; check CRI if color fidelity matters.
- Match the physical fit. Confirm the bulb’s base and shape fit the socket and shade.
- Verify controls and fixture limits. If you use a dimmer, confirm that the specific bulb is compatible. Check packaging for restrictions on enclosed fixtures and intended use.
- Compare operating costs and terms. Compare wattage at the same lumen output, your local electricity rate, expected use, rated life, purchase price, and warranty.
For CFLs, fixture compatibility can vary by design. DOE distinguishes integrated CFLs, with a built-in ballast, from non-integrated versions with a separate, replaceable ballast. Integrated household CFLs commonly use a medium base and often have a spiral shape. Consult DOE’s CFL overview and the bulb packaging for the relevant fit details.

How to dispose of CFLs
CFLs contain mercury; LEDs do not. Do not assume a CFL belongs in ordinary household waste or that every community has the same recycling option. Check your local waste authority’s instructions or ask a retailer about collection. Disposal arrangements vary by location, so follow the guidance that applies where you live. DOE’s CFL information covers the mercury distinction.
Will U.S. efficiency rules make existing CFLs unusable?
No. In the United States, DOE says manufacturers of covered general service lamps must comply with the relevant standard beginning July 25, 2028. The rule concerns newly produced or imported covered lamps; it does not stop consumers from continuing to use or buying bulbs that were already manufactured. DOE says the final efficiency level can be met by widely available LEDs but not by CFLs. The date is a manufacturer compliance date, not a deadline for replacing bulbs already in a home. Details appear in DOE’s 2023 announcement.
