If your goal is to improve your own League of Legends play, coaching is the better choice. A boost can change the rank shown on your account, but another player earns that result. Coaching keeps you in control of your games and gives you feedback you can apply yourself. Riot treats account sharing and rank manipulation as policy violations, so boosting also carries account risk.
What is the difference between boosting and coaching?
With rank boosting, a more skilled player logs into someone else’s account and plays ranked games to raise its Matchmaking Rating (MMR) or rank. Riot describes that behavior as boosting. With coaching, the account owner remains the player and receives instruction, feedback, or review of their play.

The key difference is who makes the in-game decisions. A boosted account may display a higher rank, but that result does not show that its owner can consistently play at that level. Coaching can address the owner’s decisions directly; whether that leads to better results depends on the player and the instruction, and is not guaranteed.

Coaching is the more defensible option if you want to develop skills you can carry into future games. A coach can review your own matches, explain decisions, or give feedback during play. You can then try those ideas yourself. A boost, by contrast, transfers the ranked games to someone else. It may alter the account’s rank, but it does not provide the same opportunity to practise making those decisions.

This is a practical distinction, not the result of a controlled study comparing improvement rates. Riot’s cited policy materials do not establish that coaching improves rank by a particular amount, or that any service can guarantee a climb.
How do rank boosting and coaching compare?

Why boosting can put your account at risk
Riot says account sharing violates its Terms of Service and can result in bans. It also identifies solo boosting and hitchhiking or queue boosting among forms of rank manipulation; its Community Pact says detected rank manipulation can lead to penalties. Riot’s developer policy says products may not offer MMR/ELO boosting or account exchanges.

Riot’s Account Penalties and Enforcement FAQ states that account-sharing punishments began September 9, 2025 (Patch 25.18), and penalty linking began November 19, 2025 (Patch 25.23). Those dates describe Riot’s enforcement timeline; they are not a promise that every case will be detected or handled in the same way.

Riot’s Anti-Boost article describes a system designed to detect cases where a higher-rated player logs into an account and earns a significant amount of its ranked points by performing beyond the usual player’s skill level. Riot says the system launched privately on League of Legends in September 2025. That is Riot’s description of its system, not a guarantee of universal detection.

In its FAQ, Riot says its goal is to get boosting out of League and that it has a thorough system for detecting these accounts with high accuracy. This is Riot’s stated position; it should not be read as proof that every violation will be caught.

Coaching quality and fit can vary. Before paying, compare what the coach actually does and what you will receive, rather than treating a promised rank outcome as proof of value.

- Format: Is instruction live, based on replays, or a combination—and which format suits how you learn?
- Relevant knowledge: Can you assess the coach’s experience with your game, role, or goals?
- Session details: Is the format clear, and do you know the cost and what follow-up, if any, is included?

When each option fits the goal
- Choose coaching if you want to understand your own mistakes, practise decisions, and work toward improvement while playing your account.
- Do not use boosting as a shortcut to learning. It has someone else play your ranked games, does not demonstrate your ability, and can expose your account to penalties under Riot’s policies.
