If League of Legends says, “There was an unexpected error with the login session. Please try again,” close every League-related task in Task Manager, then reopen the client and sign in again. Riot says this specific error tends to happen when another League client instance is stuck running in the background. This is Riot’s recommended first step, not a guaranteed fix.
Fix the login-session error by closing League tasks
- Open Task Manager. Use the Windows search box to find and open Task Manager.
- End League-related tasks. In Task Manager, select each task related to League of Legends and choose End task. Riot’s guidance does not name specific processes, so use the task names shown on your PC rather than ending unrelated applications.
- Reopen League of Legends. Launch the client again and try to sign in.
Riot Games Player Support identifies a stuck client instance in the background as the likely cause of “Unexpected Error With Login Session” and recommends ending League-related tasks before reopening the client. The error-code page does not promise that this step will resolve every case or provide a more detailed error-specific procedure. Riot’s League Error Codes and Solutions was published May 19, 2025.

Check that it is the session error, not a different login error
Riot lists “Unexpected Error With Login Session” separately from “Unexpected Login Error.” The similar wording matters because Riot associates the latter with an unstable internet connection and recommends different troubleshooting. Match your message to the correct row before changing network settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Message | Cause Riot associates with it | Riot’s guidance |
|---|---|---|
| “Unexpected Error With Login Session” | Another League client instance stuck in the background | End League-related tasks, reopen the client, and try signing in again |
| “Unexpected Login Error” | Generally, an unstable internet connection | Riot recommends resetting the router and changing DNS; if it continues, contact your internet service provider |
Do not treat a router reset or DNS change as the documented fix for the session-specific wording. Riot assigns those steps to the separate “Unexpected Login Error.”

What to do if ending League tasks does not work
Riot’s error-code entry does not give another ordered fix specifically for “Unexpected Error With Login Session.” Use the general troubleshooting links on its error-code page, use the Riot Repair Tool where appropriate, or submit a ticket to Player Support. Avoid assuming that a connectivity fix or account-security change is the answer to this particular message.
When the problem may be an account issue instead
If you cannot sign in because the account is locked, or the message concerns account eligibility or ownership, treat that as an account-support issue rather than assuming it is a stuck client. Riot’s locked-out guidance directs affected users to submit a ticket and verify account details.

For general account protection, Riot recommends signing in only through authenticate.riotgames.com and enabling multifactor authentication. Those are security precautions, not the documented remedy for the login-session error. See Riot’s account-protection guidance.
If Riot Support asks for Mac logs
Riot says LeagueClient logs on Mac record events from launch through champion select, including login-screen errors. Its log guide says support generally needs only one or two requested files. Send the files support asks for instead of collecting every log listed in the guide: Network, System and Logs (Mac), published May 13, 2026.
