Yes, but not on every platform and not with a single switch. Two self-hosted conferencing stacks have documented LDAP routes: Jitsi Meet, which validates credentials through Cyrus SASL and saslauthd sitting between Prosody and your directory, and BigBlueButton’s Greenlight front end, which includes LDAP authentication settings. Both can work against Active Directory (AD), but the exact username attribute, search filter, TLS configuration and software version all change the outcome, and the Jitsi LDAP guide describes itself as unfinished. Its own wording is “This is a first draft and might not work on your system” (Jitsi Meet Handbook, LDAP Authentication page, last updated October 5, 2026).
This guide walks through each documented path, explains how to choose the AD login attribute, and gives a test sequence that proves the directory works before you touch the conferencing platform.

Which self-hosted options have a documented LDAP path
LDAP is not a feature every conferencing server offers. The table below lists the documented routes covered in this guide. Anything not listed here should be treated as unverified until its own release documentation says otherwise.

Gather these items first. Most failed integrations trace back to one of them.

- The exact platform and version you run, and the documentation that matches it. Jitsi’s Debian/Prosody path and Docker path use different variable names and different placeholders.
- A read-only bind account in AD with permission to search the users container. Do not reuse a domain administrator account.
- The LDAP search base (the distinguished name of the OU that contains your users) and the directory’s LDAPS endpoint.
- The CA certificate that issued your domain controllers’ LDAPS certificate, so the conferencing host can verify it.
- A test user account and a known-wrong password for negative testing.
- A rollback path: a snapshot of the conferencing host or a copy of its configuration files.
Jitsi Meet on Debian or Prosody: the Cyrus SASL route
Jitsi’s documented LDAP authentication does not make Prosody query the directory directly. Instead, Prosody hands user-supplied credentials to saslauthd, which validates them against LDAP. This means Prosody’s local user database is bypassed for authentication, and the directory decides whether a password is correct.
The package set in the guide includes saslauthd, the Cyrus SASL LDAP modules, the Lua Cyrus SASL bindings and Prosody modules. The guide notes that Cyrus SASL support was removed from mainline Prosody and moved to the community module repository, so you need mod_auth_cyrus from there. Install the packages from your distribution’s repositories and the community modules from the Prosody modules repository, then follow the guide’s order below.
- Install the packages. Install saslauthd, the LDAP support module for Cyrus SASL, the Lua Cyrus SASL bindings, and the Prosody modules listed in the guide. Add
mod_auth_cyrusfrom the community repository. - Configure saslauthd for LDAP. Point saslauthd’s LDAP mechanism at your LDAPS server, supply the bind identity and password, set the search base, and select bind authentication. The guide’s example uses an LDAPS URL, which is the transport you should keep.
- Set the username filter. Start with the guide’s default filter
uid=%uonly for OpenLDAP-style directories. For Samba or Microsoft AD, the guide says you may need(sAMAccountName=%U)becauseuidis often unset there. See the section on choosing the AD attribute. - Enable saslauthd at boot and start it. Confirm the service is running before testing.
- Test saslauthd on its own with
testsaslauthdusing one valid and one invalid credential (see the test sequence below). - Grant Prosody access to the saslauthd socket. Prosody’s process user must be able to reach the socket, or authentication will fail even when the LDAP test passes.
- Configure the Cyrus SASL application file for Prosody so Prosody’s SASL requests reach saslauthd.
- Switch Prosody’s
authenticationsetting tocyrusonly after the saslauthd test succeeds, then reload or restart Prosody and log in with a real AD account.
Test saslauthd before you touch Prosody
The guide’s core advice is to isolate the directory check. Run testsaslauthd against a known-good account, then against a deliberately wrong password. A successful test returns an OK result; a rejected password returns a failure. Use single quotes around the password so the shell does not interpret special characters.

The allow_unencrypted_plain_auth temptation
When login fails in a troubleshooting session, the guide mentions that enabling allow_unencrypted_plain_auth may sometimes be needed. It also says this is not recommended because it weakens security. Do not use it as a quick fix. If authentication only works after enabling it, the underlying problem is almost always the transport: a missing CA, an unencrypted connection, or a certificate mismatch. Fix the TLS chain instead.
Jitsi Meet in Docker
The Docker deployment uses environment variables rather than saslauthd configuration files. Enable authentication with ENABLE_AUTH and set AUTH_TYPE=ldap. Then set LDAP_URL to your directory endpoint and LDAP_BASE to the search base.
The documentation also exposes variables for the optional bind DN and password, the search filter (the example uses (sAMAccountName=%u)), the authentication method, the LDAP protocol version, the TLS switches, peer-certificate verification, the CA certificate file or directory, and the StartTLS option. Read the variable reference for your image version rather than copying names from older posts, because names and defaults can change between releases.

They are two different integration layers. The Docker route has its own placeholder convention: its example filter uses %u, while the package guide writes the AD placeholder as %U. Use the placeholder that your version’s documentation specifies, and confirm the result with a login test.

Set the public URL correctly
Docker deployments need a real PUBLIC_URL. The Docker self-hosting documentation says that accessing the service over plain HTTP rather than HTTPS can produce browser WebRTC microphone and camera errors. Those errors look like camera problems, but they are a deployment issue and will appear even when LDAP is configured correctly.
BigBlueButton Greenlight
Greenlight’s configuration includes LDAP settings for the server, port, method, UID field, base, authentication method, bind DN and password, role field and filter. Its documentation says you must determine the correct user ID parameter for AD. Two values are named as common choices: sAMAccountName and UserPrincipalName.
Login precedence
Greenlight’s LDAP authentication takes precedence over other configured providers. If you already have local accounts or another login provider, enabling LDAP changes how those users sign in. Decide which accounts should authenticate through the directory, and plan how existing local administrators will still be able to sign in before you enable it.
Apply the change
Greenlight’s documentation states that a running container must be recreated for environment changes to take effect. Restarting a container that keeps its old environment will leave the previous LDAP settings in place. Recreate the container after each change, then test logins again.

Prosody’s mod_auth_ldap is a different route
Prosody’s standalone mod_auth_ldap module is a separate option from the Cyrus SASL route used by Jitsi’s guide. Do not mix their settings. The module accepts a server, base, bind identity, search filter, scope, TLS option and a password-validation mode.
- Bind mode checks credentials by binding to the directory as the user. The directory password does not need to be readable in plaintext, but this mode supports only the PLAIN authentication mechanism.
- getpasswd mode retrieves the plaintext password from LDAP and feeds it into Prosody’s own authentication system. It requires plaintext password access in the directory, which Active Directory generally does not provide.
For an AD-backed Prosody deployment, bind mode is the mode to evaluate first. Confirm the authentication mechanism your clients negotiate before you commit to it.
Choosing the AD username attribute
This is the decision most likely to produce silent failures, so make it deliberately.

sAMAccountNameis the pre-Windows-2000 logon name that most AD users type. The Jitsi guide and Docker example both use it in their filter, and it is the value the guide recommends whenuidis unset. It is usually the right first choice for Jitsi.UserPrincipalNameis the email-style name (for example, a user@example domain form). Greenlight names it as a common alternative. Use it when your users log in with their UPN and your directory is configured to accept it.
The Jitsi guide also warns about usernames that contain an @. It describes %U as the user portion of a username, so a UPN typed with its domain suffix may not match what the filter expects. Test the exact string users type, not the name you expect them to type. If UPN logins fail while sAMAccountName logins succeed, the issue is almost always the suffix handling rather than the password.

The attribute must exist and be populated for the accounts you expect to log in. Check it on a test account with a directory query before configuring anything.

Check the authentication logs for the conferencing host and saslauthd whenever a test fails. Errors there usually name the failing stage more precisely than the login page does.
Verify the whole path, not just the password
After the directory test passes and the conferencing platform is configured, test three things separately. First, log in with an authorized AD account. Second, log in with a rejected password for the same account. Third, check whether the platform’s room-creation and guest policies behave as you intend. An LDAP credential check does not, by itself, establish which users may create rooms or join as guests. Those rules are set by the conferencing platform’s own configuration and should be tested as a distinct step.
What the available documentation does not establish
The documented paths describe how to configure each platform. They do not establish a controlled comparison of features, support commitments, or reliability between Jitsi and Greenlight, and they do not provide an inventory of every self-hosted conferencing product. The Jitsi guide reports testing in two environments: Debian 11 with Prosody 0.11 and OpenLDAP, and Ubuntu 24.04 with Prosody 0.12 and Active Directory. Those results do not guarantee behavior with your AD schema, your domain functional level, or a different release. Confirm the documentation for your exact version, and verify every search base, attribute and filter against your own directory before using a sample value in production.
