Its printed frame guides the strip into position; the trade-off is careful fitting, a narrow choice of strip, and some unused pixels. The creator recommends the build for people comfortable with 3D printing, wiring, and programming—not beginners.
How the Lazy 7 Mini works
Instead of assembling individual LEDs into four digits, the design routes one addressable strip through a 3D-printed frame. Tabs hold the strip in place, and openings direct its light through diffuser pieces. The route starts at the upper-left data-in point and runs to the lower-right. Jeremy Cook’s Hackster project overview describes the frame-and-diffuser arrangement and the strip’s turns between rows.

“Minimal soldering” does not mean solder-free: the documented build connects the strip’s three conductors at its data-in end to the controller, and connects a USB cable for power. The approach avoids soldering individual LEDs into a digit pattern, but still involves fitting the strip, wiring electronics, printing parts, and loading or adapting the clock sketch.

Parallyze’s Lazy 7 / Mini build guide specifies a WS2812B strip with 30 LEDs per meter. The guide’s route calls for 37 pixels, while the finished clock uses 30: 28 for the four digits and two for the colon. Four pixels are left unused to avoid soldering across rows, and three more near the separator are unused in the documented layout. The guide says a 30-pixel arrangement is possible if the sketch’s arrays are changed.

- Width and profile: Use a regular, uncoated strip about 10 mm wide and roughly 1 mm thick.
- Coating: Waterproofed or coated strips are not expected to fit the frame; thick adhesive-backed strips may also cause fit problems.
- Bends: Avoid tight bends, especially near solder pads, where bending can damage LEDs.
- Routing: Follow the frame’s path from upper-left data-in to lower-right, checking the row transitions as you seat the strip.
Parts, controller options, and printing
Electronics
The guide recommends an Arduino Nano with an ATmega328P and a DS3231 real-time clock module. Hackster’s coverage shows a different example build using an Arduino Pro Mini and DS3231. The sources do not establish that either controller is better: choose a board you can wire and support in the firmware, and check how its size and connections suit your enclosure.
The guide also lists two 6 × 6 mm pushbuttons with 1.5–4 mm shaft length, a USB cable, and a 5 V USB supply. It notes that the enclosure can accommodate different microcontroller and RTC combinations. The pictured controller and RTC are illustrative; use the separate clock-sketch instructions for wiring and feature details.

Printed parts and build volume
The print set includes the outer case, case clips, LED frame, left and right clips, electronics case and lid or cable cover, and diffuser components. The creator used black and natural PLA, recommending clear or natural material for the diffusers. Material use is estimated at about 100 g for black parts and 30–50 g for diffusers, depending on print settings.
The outer case’s largest piece measures 151.8 × 63.5 × 48 mm. Oriented diagonally, the guide gives a required printer build volume of 148.72 × 148.72 × 48 mm; Hackster rounds this to just under 150 × 150 × 50 mm. Confirm the usable build area of your printer and the orientation before starting.

Assembly points that matter
- Print the case, frame, clips, electronics housing, and diffuser parts. Use natural or clear material for the diffuser pieces if following the creator’s material recommendation.
- Lay the specified strip into the frame from the upper-left data-in end. Press it beneath the tabs and follow the route carefully, avoiding sharp bends near pads.
- Fit the side clips and verify that no section of the strip sits higher than the clips; a raised section can interfere with closing or fitting the case.
- Connect the strip’s three conductors at the data-in end to the microcontroller. Connect the USB power cable, then secure the cable in the case before closing the enclosure.
- Use the separate clock-sketch guide for the controller wiring and software configuration; the build guide’s pictured electronics are not a complete wiring specification.
Power and brightness
The creator’s guide estimates 80–180 mA at low brightness, gives the default sketch limit as 500 mA, and calculates a theoretical maximum of about 2.2 A or 11 W for all 37 specified pixels. These are design figures in the guide, not independent measurements, and actual draw depends on brightness, the sketch, and the electronics. The author warns that the theoretical maximum may be too much for the small PLA enclosure, and cautions against running a sketch that addresses all pixels without power limiting. Keep the sketch’s current limit in mind rather than assuming the supply or enclosure is suitable for full-brightness operation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Who should build it?
The project is open DIY: it depends on printed parts, strip routing, electronics wiring, and programming rather than a ready-to-use commercial clock. The creator explicitly writes, “I do not recommend this to beginners.” It is a more suitable project for someone who can troubleshoot a microcontroller build and has access to a printer with the required build area. Availability of a complete commercial kit or finished clock is not established by the cited project materials.
