For clippings, mulch when conditions allow, follow the manual’s bagging instructions, and mow often enough to remove no more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
What size mower deck do you need?
Deck width is the width of the mower’s cutting swath in one pass—not a promise about how quickly it will finish your lawn. Wider decks can cover open ground efficiently, but access, obstacles, storage space, and terrain may matter more on a complicated property.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 mower guide describes many riding mowers as cutting a 42- to 48-inch swath, with wide-deck versions cutting 54 inches or more in one pass. The guide describes robotic mower decks as typically narrow, around 9 inches. These are broad category descriptions, not universal recommendations or specifications for every model. Consumer Reports’ mower guide
- Measure narrow gates and paths between the storage area and lawn.
- Consider how often you will need to maneuver around trees, beds, and other obstacles.
- Match the mower to slopes and uneven ground, using the model’s manual for its specific operating limits.
- Check the exact model’s cutting width and storage dimensions before buying.
How long will a lawn mower run?
There is no dependable runtime figure that applies to gas, corded electric, battery, or robotic mowers as a whole. Actual operating time depends on the model, its fuel or battery capacity, workload, and conditions. A battery capacity or advertised maximum on its own does not establish how long that mower will run on your lawn.

For a useful estimate, look for a figure tied to the exact model and conditions, and distinguish runtime from the time needed to mow a particular area. If a manufacturer does not state a relevant runtime, treat it as model-specific rather than assuming a general number. Consumer Reports’ mower guide
How loud is a lawn mower?
A decibel figure is meaningful only alongside its measurement location and method. A reading at the operator’s ear is not directly comparable to a reading taken at a distance.

A 1973 U.S. EPA technical report gives historical sample ranges of approximately 65.5–72 dB(A) at 50 feet for the gasoline walk-behind mowers measured and 62–68 dB(A) at 50 feet for the electric walk-behind mowers measured. These are not current product ratings; the same report gives substantially different figures at the operator’s ear. Use current, model-specific information when comparing present-day mowers, and check how and where a reported level was measured. U.S. EPA’s historical mower noise report
Manually propelled or reel mowers are described as quiet in the extension guide and may suit a small lawn, but the available sources do not establish current model-by-model noise comparisons. E.A.S.Y. Lawn Mowing, Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and U.S. EPA Region VIII

Should you mulch, bag, or discharge grass clippings?
Mulching mowers finely chop clippings and leave them on the lawn to break down. Clippings left on the lawn return nutrients and do not themselves cause thatch, according to the Colorado State University Cooperative Extension and U.S. EPA Region VIII guide. Bagging collects clippings; discharge depends on the mower’s configuration. Do not remove a bag unless the manual says the mower can be operated safely without it—some models require the bag. E.A.S.Y. Lawn Mowing
If the grass has grown too long to cut without leaving a heavy layer, the guide says bagging or raking may be needed to prevent surface matting. Local grass species, climate, and lawn conditions affect the best height and mowing schedule. Follow current product labels and local guidance for clippings from herbicide-treated lawns; the guide specifically warns against composting clippings from lawns treated with dicamba.

Why are grass clippings clumping under the mower?
Wet grass is a common cause: it can form clumps that clog the mower and smother grass beneath them. If conditions allow, wait until the lawn is dry before mowing. If clippings have accumulated under the deck, follow the mower manual’s cleaning instructions. Consumer Reports’ March 2026 deck-care article suggests a hard plastic ice or paint scraper or a bristled scrub brush for clippings that have clumped on. Never work near a blade that could move or start unexpectedly. Consumer Reports’ mower-deck cleaning advice

How often should you mow?
Mow often enough that you remove no more than one-third of the grass height at a time. The U.S. EPA’s homeowner guidance recommends mowing more frequently when grass is actively growing so each cut stays within that limit. If the lawn has become excessively long, bagging or raking may be necessary to avoid leaving a mat of clippings. U.S. EPA homeowner guidance on grasscycling

What maintenance and safety checks matter?
Keep the blade sharp and adjusted
A sharp, properly adjusted blade supports a cleaner cut; a dull blade can leave grass with a frayed appearance. The extension guide gives sharpening intervals that vary by grass type, but use the mower maker’s current maintenance schedule rather than treating those historical intervals as universal. E.A.S.Y. Lawn Mowing
Clean the deck safely
Moist clippings and yard debris can deteriorate a metal deck if they are not removed regularly. Use the cleaning method allowed by the manual, and keep hands and tools away from any blade that could move or start unexpectedly. Consumer Reports’ mower-deck cleaning advice
Assess the mowing route and terrain
Before mowing, consider slopes, uneven or damp surfaces, and nearby obstructions. The U.S. Department of Energy’s 2021 safety bulletin also recommends using available safety equipment, such as seat belts and rollover protective structures where fitted or required. Follow the specific mower manual for slope limits and operating precautions. U.S. Department of Energy safety bulletin
