The change is an early compatibility step, not confirmation of a finished, stable SteamOS port. Owners should wait for device-specific installation instructions and a stable-channel release before replacing either handheld’s factory operating system.
Which AYANEO handhelds are named?
The update identifies exactly two devices. Notebookcheck’s coverage of SteamOS 3.8.28 names the Pocket S2 and KONKR Fit, while PC Gamer’s August 10, 2026 report on SteamOS 3.8.25 beta independently lists the same pair.

What “initial gamepad support” actually means
SteamOS recognizing a handheld’s controls is a necessary foundation for a usable console-style experience, but it covers only an early part of device integration. The wording does not promise that every button, analog stick, trigger, motion feature, hotkey, display mode, audio device, suspend/resume cycle or power-management behavior works correctly.

Why the two devices may need different work
Pocket S2: Android and Snapdragon
The Pocket S2 ships with Android and a Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 processor. That gives it a different software and processor starting point from the x86 handhelds traditionally associated with desktop Linux gaming. Initial controller support is therefore best read as an early hardware-enablement milestone, not evidence that a complete replacement image is ready.
KONKR Fit: Windows and AMD
The KONKR Fit ships with Windows and uses AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 or HX 470 configurations. Its AMD platform is a different compatibility case from the Snapdragon-based Pocket S2, even though both devices appear in the same SteamOS support change. The report supplies no performance comparison between the models.

SteamOS 3.8.25 beta and 3.8.28: how the reports fit together
PC Gamer’s August 10, 2026 reporting on SteamOS 3.8.25 beta already named both handhelds. Notebookcheck later described SteamOS 3.8.28 as adding their initial gamepad support. Together, those reports show continuing work across beta and subsequent update reporting, but they do not provide a stable-release date or confirm that all hardware functions are complete.
Can you install SteamOS now?
There is no device-specific installation procedure or stable image confirmed in the cited reports. Treat the update as compatibility development rather than a ready-to-follow installation invitation.

- Keep the factory operating system. The Pocket S2’s Android installation and the KONKR Fit’s Windows installation remain the documented starting points.
- Do not replace the system on the strength of the changelog alone. A failed or incomplete installation can leave you without a working recovery path, and the reports do not describe recovery media or supported flashing steps.
- Wait for an official device guide. Look for instructions that identify the exact model, image, boot process, controller mapping, storage requirements and rollback method.
- Confirm stable-channel availability. Beta or development support can change between releases; stable confirmation should come before treating SteamOS as a dependable replacement.
- Back up personal data and recovery resources first. This is especially important when moving from Android or Windows to another operating system.
What owners should check before experimenting
- The announcement explicitly covers the Pocket S2 and KONKR Fit, not every AYANEO handheld.
- “Initial gamepad support” is narrower than full device support.
- No stable build, release date, benchmark, price comparison or battery-life result is established by the reports.
- The two handhelds start from different operating systems and processor architectures, so instructions for one should not be assumed to apply to the other.
- Sleep, wake, graphics performance, audio, wireless networking, buttons and firmware behavior still need device-specific confirmation.
What this means for prospective buyers
The update is encouraging if you want broader SteamOS hardware support, but it should not be used as proof that either AYANEO model currently delivers a polished SteamOS experience. The evidence supports a simple distinction: both handhelds have entered early controller-compatibility work, while neither has a confirmed stable SteamOS release in the cited coverage.
