The voice-typing feature is attributed to software version 5.20.1 and coverage says it applies to the Scribe 3rd Generation, Scribe Colorsoft, and Scribe without Front Light—not earlier Scribes.
What changed in Kindle Scribe software 5.20.1?
Contemporaneous reports say version 5.20.1 adds voice typing: open the on-screen keyboard and tap its microphone icon to dictate. The reported uses include Search, book and document annotations, and notebook names. The available coverage does not establish that dictation works in every text field or list all supported languages.

There is a documentation mismatch. Amazon’s visible US Scribe release notes list fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes for eBooks and personal documents, along with general improvements, but do not mention dictation. Android Authority and The eBook Reader Blog report the microphone feature based on update notes. Amazon’s UK software catalog lists version 5.20.1 for the recent Scribe families, but its page text does not enumerate dictation.

Which Kindle Scribe models are reported to support voice typing?
Amazon’s UK catalog lists version 5.20.1 for several models, but that listing alone does not mean every model gets every feature. The model-specific voice-typing eligibility below comes from update coverage, not the visible US release notes.
| Model | 5.20.1 listed by Amazon UK? | Reported voice typing | Other reported update feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle Scribe 3rd Generation | Yes | Yes | Not stated for this model in the cited coverage |
| Kindle Scribe Colorsoft (1st Generation) | Yes | Yes | Not stated for this model in the cited coverage |
| Kindle Scribe without Front Light | Yes | Yes | Not stated for this model in the cited coverage |
| Kindle Scribe (2024) | Yes | No, according to reporting that says earlier generations do not get voice typing | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, according to reporting |
| Kindle Scribe (2022) | Yes | No, according to reporting that says earlier generations do not get voice typing | Fixed-layout handwritten sticky notes, according to reporting |
The version 5.20.1 release notes date the build to September 2026. A software listing is not a promise that an update has already reached every device; consult the device’s software update options if it has not appeared yet.

How do you dictate on a compatible Scribe?
- Open a supported text-entry area, such as Search, a book or document annotation, or a notebook-name field.
- Bring up the on-screen keyboard.
- Tap the microphone icon and dictate the text.
The reports do not provide a complete field-by-field compatibility list, so the microphone may not appear in every place where the Scribe accepts text.
How much faster or more accurate is voice typing?
No published test in the cited coverage measures dictation accuracy, response time, words per minute, or time saved compared with keyboard entry. The feature establishes a voice-entry option, not a quantified performance gain.

Amazon separately describes its redesigned 2025 Scribe as “40% faster for writing and page turns.” That manufacturer claim concerns writing and page turns, not voice-typing speed or accuracy. Amazon’s launch announcement also highlights the device’s redesigned hardware and other features; those do not independently verify the dictation claim.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does voice typing fit with other Scribe features?
Voice input is a separate convenience from the Scribe’s notebook tools. Amazon’s Scribe feature guide describes natural-language notebook search with AI summaries and follow-up questions, AI notebook summaries, handwriting refinement into a script font, and Smart Shapes. The redesigned Scribe launch page also lists Google Drive and OneDrive document import and export, OneNote export, color pens and highlighters, and notebook workspace organization. These are separate capabilities, not evidence about dictation performance.
