Bitcoin attracted an estimated $4.9 billion in “new money” over the 30 days through October 5, 2026, while its realized capitalization rose $12.8 billion, according to figures Glassnode supplied as reported by Cointelegraph. The measures are not equivalent: the report says roughly three-fifths of realized-cap growth came from existing holders’ coins changing hands at higher prices, rather than new capital entering the market.
What the $4.9 billion figure measures
Cointelegraph’s October 8, 2026 report attributed the rolling 30-day estimate through October 5 to Glassnode. It described the estimate as combining three categories:

- Corporate treasury purchases
- Stablecoin growth
- Inflows to U.S. spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs)
The $4.9 billion is a rolling-window estimate, not a calendar-month total. The report does not provide values for each category or enough methodological detail to reproduce the calculation. “New money” here should therefore be understood as this reported estimate, not as a universal or standardized measure of Bitcoin capital flows. Cointelegraph’s report is the available account of the Glassnode figures; the underlying Glassnode release and calculation were not located.

Why realized capitalization rose more
Realized capitalization values each Bitcoin at the price at which it last moved on-chain, rather than valuing every coin at the current market price. When a coin moves to a new holder at a higher price, that change can increase realized cap even though it does not represent an equivalent amount of newly entering capital.

- BITCOIN EXCLUSIVE, PHONE VERIFICATION: Bitkey is designed from the ground up exclusively for bitcoin — a dedicated hardware wallet for secure bitcoin storage. Approve transactions with a tap using your phone and NFC. No device screen is required.
- SELF-CUSTODY, NO EXCHANGE OR CUSTODIAN REQUIRED: You hold two of the three keys in the Bitkey system – one on your phone and one on your Bitkey device. The third is stored on Bitkey’s server and cannot move your bitcoin on its own.
- NO SEED PHRASE: Set up and use Bitkey without creating or storing a seed phrase.
- 2-of-3 MULTISIG: Three keys are stored separately across your phone, Bitkey device, and Bitkey’s server. Any two keys are required to move your bitcoin.
- BUILT-IN RECOVERY: Encrypted backup and recovery tools can help you regain access if you lose your phone or Bitkey device. You can also designate a Recovery Contact.
For the same 30-day period, Cointelegraph reported a $12.8 billion increase in realized capitalization. Glassnode attributed about three-fifths of that rise to existing investors’ coins changing hands at higher prices. On that account, the $4.9 billion new-money estimate covered less than two-fifths of the realized-cap increase; the two figures describe different things and should not be read as matching inflow totals. The report’s account of the realized-cap comparison does not include a component-level breakdown.
What the report said about the stalled rally
At publication on October 8, Cointelegraph said Bitcoin had made four unsuccessful attempts to rise above $87,000 since September 21 and was trading around $83,000, down 1% month to date. These are snapshots from the report date, not current market prices.

The article also cited profit-taking activity: on the day Bitcoin first closed above $85,000 since January, 86% of coins sent to exchanges at a profit came from short-term holders, defined there as holders whose coins had been held for fewer than 155 days. It separately attributed a short-term-holder aggregate realized price near $78,250 as of October 7 to CryptoQuant. These figures offer context on trading and holder behavior, but the report does not establish that they caused the rally to stall.

Cointelegraph said Glassnode compared the current pattern with rallies in 2024 and 2025, describing a similar mix of new-money estimates and realized-cap growth but substantially larger inflows during those earlier rallies. The comparison chart was not independently reviewed, and the report provides no underlying values here, so it supports only that broad historical characterization.

What the figures can—and cannot—show
- They indicate a difference in scale between two measures: an estimated $4.9 billion in new money and a reported $12.8 billion rise in realized cap over the same rolling period.
- They do not show that $12.8 billion of fresh cash entered Bitcoin: realized cap can rise when existing coins move at higher prices.
- They do not provide a complete flow ledger: the report gives no category-by-category breakdown or detailed method for calculating the $4.9 billion estimate.
- They are provider figures relayed by a news report: Cointelegraph attributes the estimates and interpretation to Glassnode, while the short-term-holder cost basis is attributed to CryptoQuant. A TradingView-hosted republication repeats the report and is not independent confirmation.
