Eye mapping can help an ophthalmologist tailor laser vision correction to the shape of a patient’s cornea or to optical aberrations across the eye. Those measurements guide a treatment profile; they do not make LASIK suitable for every person or guarantee better vision. The right approach depends on what the measurements show, the health of the eye, and the surgeon’s evaluation.
What does “eye mapping” measure?
The term can refer to different tests and treatment-planning methods. In topography-guided LASIK, a map of the cornea’s surface informs the treatment plan. In wavefront-guided treatment, measurements capture optical aberrations across the eye, including higher-order aberrations that ordinary glasses prescriptions do not describe. These methods measure different things and are not interchangeable.

Topography-guided LASIK
The FDA’s 2021 patient booklet describes a specific system in which an ALLEGRO Topolyzer measures the cornea and sends information to an ALLEGRETTO WAVE EYE-Q excimer laser. The laser removes small amounts of corneal tissue according to the treatment plan. This is the workflow documented for that system, not a universal description of every laser platform. FDA patient booklet (2021)
Wavefront-guided and wavefront-optimized treatment
Wavefront-guided ablation uses total ocular aberrometry: it measures optical aberrations across the eye rather than relying only on the corneal surface map. Wavefront-optimized treatment is different again. It adds peripheral laser pulses to address spherical aberration, but does not measure each eye’s higher-order aberrations. The FDA explains wavefront measurements and LASIK considerations in its LASIK FAQ.

How does the measurement affect the treatment choice?
A map is useful only in relation to the source of the irregularity and the patient’s full clinical picture. The American Academy of Ophthalmology’s EyeWiki guidance says topography-guided treatment is preferred when the aberration source is clearly corneal and irregular. Wavefront-guided treatment may be appropriate when aberrations are internal to the eye or associated with a prior irregular or decentered ablation. AAO EyeWiki: Preoperative Evaluation for LASIK Surgery
EyeWiki also notes that wavefront-guided LASIK has not been shown to outperform conventional or wavefront-optimized LASIK in eyes with unremarkable baseline aberrometry. A more detailed measurement is not automatically a better match: the surgeon needs to determine whether the measured feature is clinically relevant and whether treatment is appropriate.

What do the reported vision results mean?
Published figures describe particular devices, study groups, and follow-up periods—not the result an individual patient should expect. In the FDA booklet’s study of 249 eyes from 212 patients treated with the ALLEGRETTO WAVE EYE-Q system, 92.7% of treated eyes had uncorrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better at three months, and 68.9% had 20/16 or better at three months. Those device-specific study results are not a prediction or guarantee for another patient. FDA patient booklet (2021)

Can mapping make someone eligible for LASIK?
No. Corneal topography and tomography help with screening as well as planning. AAO EyeWiki identifies abnormal topography or tomography indicating keratoconus or another ectatic disease as an absolute contraindication to LASIK. A detailed map cannot override a sign of corneal disease.
Candidacy also depends on clinical measurements, eye health, stable refraction, and professional judgment. The FDA states: “Patient selection (“When is LASIK not for me?”) and the experience and competence of the surgeon are still the most important considerations.” U.S. Food and Drug Administration, LASIK FAQ

What are the limitations and risks?
LASIK permanently removes corneal tissue. It does not prevent age-related focusing changes such as presbyopia, so reading glasses may still be needed later. Possible risks listed by Alcon include dry eye syndrome, continued need for glasses or contact lenses, halos, glare, starbursts, double vision, and loss of vision. Alcon release, July 22, 2019
The FDA also reports that average higher-order aberrations still increased after wavefront-guided treatment in clinical studies, although less than after conventional LASIK. Customization should therefore be understood as using measurements to shape a plan—not as a promise that visual symptoms will be avoided or that outcomes will be superior for every eye. FDA LASIK FAQ
