Neither a large university nor a small college is automatically the better choice. The right campus is the one where the specific program, academic support, daily social life, setting and cost fit you. Compare those details at each school instead of treating enrollment size as a promise about what your experience will be.
What does “large” or “small” tell you?
Enrollment is a useful starting point, but there is no universal cutoff that predicts how a campus will feel. The National Center for Education Statistics reported that, in fall 2021, institutions with 20,000 or more students made up 5 percent of U.S. degree-granting institutions and enrolled 38 percent of students; the figures were published in 2023. That describes the distribution of enrollment, not a boundary between two kinds of student experience. NCES enrollment distribution

A university’s total enrollment may include several campuses, while a smaller institution can still have a spread-out layout or busy academic departments. Check undergraduate enrollment, campus locations and the distance between places you would use. What matters is the routine you would actually follow.

| Decision area | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Campus and travel | Undergraduate enrollment, number and location of campuses, and travel time between classes | Total headcount does not show whether your daily routine is concentrated or spread across locations. |
| Academic access | Typical class sizes in likely courses, access to professors and teaching assistants, advising, and registration | The actual way instruction and help work in your program matters more than assumptions based on size or reputation. |
| Programs and opportunities | Majors, minors, electives, research, internships and when undergraduates can participate | A wide menu is useful only when you can access the opportunities that fit your goals. |
| Community | Clubs, events, traditions, residence life, student organizations and gathering places | Consider which communities interest you and how students join them; size alone does not determine belonging. |
| Housing and setting | First-year and later housing, dining, surrounding town or city, transit and off-campus life | Your experience includes where you live and spend time beyond class. |
| Cost and outcomes | Net price, aid, debt, graduation information and earnings by field | Use comparable figures and consider your likely program; enrollment size does not explain outcome differences by itself. |
Use the NCES College Navigator and College Scorecard to compare colleges on factors such as enrollment, cost, location, majors, debt and earnings by field. Check the current data and each institution’s own pages for details that change, including course schedules, housing and admissions arrangements.

Find out what classes and academic support are really like
An overall student-to-faculty ratio cannot tell you the size of a first-year lecture, a seminar in your likely major, or how easy it is to get a required course. Ask about the courses you are most likely to take and how students get help.
- What are typical class sizes in first-year courses and in my likely major?
- How do students meet with professors outside class, and how is academic advising arranged?
- How are required courses assigned or registered for? Which classes fill quickly, and how often are required classes offered?
- Can undergraduates take part in research, internships or other hands-on work, and how early?
Ask for specifics about your program rather than assuming either that a smaller school guarantees personal attention or that a larger university guarantees more usable options. College Board recommends sitting in on a class when possible, meeting a relevant professor, and asking students about their classes and instructors. College Board campus visit guidance

Look beyond the classroom
Make a short list of the activities and settings you would actually use: student clubs, performances, sports or recreation, dining, residence halls, common rooms, and places to relax. Ask current students what they do on weekends and where they gather. Then consider how you would get to those places from your classes and housing.
Some useful questions include:
- What extracurricular activities are popular, and how can first-year students join?
- Do all first-year students live on campus, and what housing is available in later years?
- Where do students go to relax outside class, and what do they do on weekends?
- How do students get around campus and the surrounding community?
BigFuture’s tour questions also highlight class size, first-year housing, extracurriculars, advising and places to relax. Those are prompts for a conversation, not guarantees that every student will have the same experience. BigFuture campus tour FAQ

Visit in a way that reveals ordinary campus life
If you can, visit while classes are in session. A summer visit can still help with a tour and admissions information, but it may not show the usual campus atmosphere. When scheduling permits, include a class, a residence hall and the surrounding community—not only the admissions route. NACAC recommends seeing campuses of different sizes when possible and considering the timing of the visit. NACAC college visit guidance
- Prepare comparable questions. Bring the same questions about courses, advising, housing and student life to each campus.
- Attend an information session and tour. Use them to learn the institution’s account of its programs and facilities.
- Observe a student setting. Sit in on a class if possible, visit facilities, and notice how students move between places.
- Talk to students and a relevant professor. Ask about their actual experience, including how they find courses, advice and community.
- Explore nearby surroundings. Walk or travel through the area students use outside class and see whether the setting suits you.
- Write down impressions promptly. Record what felt comfortable, what raised questions and what you want to verify.
College Board visit guidance emphasizes preparing questions, meeting people, seeing facilities and noting what stood out. Comparing notes afterward can help separate a memorable tour from the features you would value every week. College Board campus visit guidance

Make the choice using trade-offs, not stereotypes
- Build a shortlist around programs, likely net cost, location and your initial preferences.
- Compare current institutional data through College Navigator and College Scorecard, then check school pages for program-level details.
- Ask each college the same practical questions about relevant course sizes, advising, course access, housing and the opportunities you care about.
- Visit where possible and account for the academic calendar; record impressions rather than relying on memory.
- Decide which daily-life trade-offs you accept. Choose the specific campus where the available opportunities, support, community, setting and cost fit your priorities.
The available enrollment figures and visit guidance do not establish that large universities or small colleges, as groups, produce better learning, belonging, completion or career outcomes. Treat claims about what “size” guarantees as questions to investigate at the institutions you are considering.
