How to Tell Whether a Tornado Siren Is a Test or a Real Alert

You usually cannot tell from the siren’s sound alone. Test schedules and activation rules vary by community, so if you hear a siren and cannot confirm it is a test, go indoors and check current official alerts. If a Tornado Warning applies to your location, take shelter immediately.

What to do when you hear a siren

  1. Go indoors first. Do not stay outside to investigate or wait to see whether the siren stops. Outdoor sirens are meant primarily to alert people outside, and may not be heard inside buildings. The National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities describes them as “an outdoor warning system designed only to alert those who are outside that something dangerous is approaching.” Read its outdoor siren FAQ.
  2. Check official information from shelter. Look for current NWS warnings for your location and announcements from your city or county emergency management or public safety office. Local media may also carry updates.
  3. Follow the warning, not a guess about the sound. A Tornado Watch means tornadoes are possible; be prepared. A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been sighted or indicated by radar and calls for immediate action. The NWS advises moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows. See Understand Tornado Alerts.

Can the sound tell you whether it is a test?

There is no universal sound code that reliably distinguishes a test from a real activation. Local siren policies differ, including test schedules, activation thresholds, and the hazards that can trigger a siren. The siren itself is a prompt to get indoors and seek information, not a detailed message about the hazard, affected area, or how long danger will last.

How to recognize a scheduled test

Use your local government’s announced schedule and current instructions as context—not as proof that an unexpected siren is harmless. Check the official site or public information channels of the city or county responsible for the sirens. Some communities cancel tests when threatening weather is possible, but that policy is local too.

For example, Boone County, Missouri, says it tests its sirens at noon on the first Wednesday of each month and may cancel a test if threatening weather occurs. That schedule is specific to Boone County; it does not establish a schedule or cancellation rule for other places. See Boone County’s siren information.

How tests and drills can differ

A routine local siren test and a statewide tornado drill are not necessarily the same event. West Virginia’s drill FAQ says its statewide drill does not necessarily activate every jurisdiction’s sirens: the county emergency management director decides whether to do so. It also explains that Wireless Emergency Alerts disregard that drill’s message because it is identified as a test. Those details apply to that drill and should not be assumed for other states or alert systems. See West Virginia’s drill FAQ.

Do not rely on a siren indoors—or wait for an all-clear

Outdoor sirens may not be audible in a home or other building, so they are not a dependable indoor warning channel. The NWS recommends a NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards for home and business alerts; verify that it is set up to receive local warnings. Official phone alerts, where available, can provide another way to receive alerts. These tools supplement—not replace—sheltering and current official instructions.
