PHP backed enums are a good fit for Laravel roles when the role set is small, stable, and changed through application code. Eloquent can cast a stored scalar attribute to an enum when a model is read and convert an enum assigned to that attribute for storage. That replaces a role lookup record in a particular data model; it does not, by itself, replace permissions, user-role relationships, or runtime administration.
What changes when a role becomes an enum?
A database-driven design commonly represents each role as a row, then associates a user with that row. With a backed-enum design, the possible role cases are declared in PHP, and a model can store the case’s scalar value in a column. The enum is the application-level type; the database column is still a separately chosen storage type.

PHP requires backed enums to use one scalar type, either int or string, and each case must have a unique explicit value. A string-backed role enum might look like this:

case Editor = 'editor';
case Member = 'member';
}
The scalar values are what can be serialized or stored and later mapped back to cases. The PHP manual explains that an enum case may need to “round-trip to a database or similar datastore,” making a built-in scalar equivalent useful. See PHP backed enumerations.

How Laravel Eloquent casts a stored value to an enum
In Laravel 13, an Eloquent model can declare an enum cast for an attribute. For example, if a users table has a role column containing values such as admin or editor, the model can map that column to Role:
protected function casts(): array
{
return [
'role' => Role::class,
];
}
With the cast in place, reading the attribute yields the corresponding enum case, and assigning an enum case to it lets Eloquent convert it for persistence. The column itself remains a stored scalar, not a PHP enum object. Check the Laravel 13 enum-casting documentation and confirm that the syntax matches the Laravel version in the project.

Backed enum and database enum are different choices
A PHP backed enum does not require the database column to use a database-native enum type. The example above can use a string-compatible column while the PHP model supplies the application-level cases. Alternatively, a migration can define a database enum column with an allowed list of values. Those are separate decisions: the PHP enum governs the type in application code; a database enum constrains values at the database layer.
Laravel’s migration documentation describes database enum columns, but the exact behavior and portability depend on the database engine and schema choices. Before adopting a native database enum, verify how the target database enforces it and how schema changes are handled in the project. See Laravel migration column types.
When a code-defined role set is a better fit
Enums make sense when role membership and meaning are controlled through code and are expected to change through a reviewed application release. The cases are declared in source code, so adding or removing a role is a code change rather than an administrator creating a row at runtime.
- Small, stable set: roles such as
admin,editor, andmemberhave clear meanings and are not customer-defined. - One role value per user: the model can represent one role directly on the user record without a separate assignment relationship.
- Deployment-controlled changes: the team is comfortable changing the role set through code review and application deployment.
- Scalar integration: downstream code can use the stored string or integer value where a readable role label is useful.
This is an architectural fit, not a universal Laravel rule. It follows from enum cases being declared in code and from the fact that database-backed role models are useful when role records and their relationships need to be managed as data.

When role records should remain in the database
Database records are generally more suitable when administrators or customers must create, rename, disable, or otherwise manage roles while the application is running. The same applies when users may hold multiple roles or roles carry editable permissions and relationships. A code enum can still represent a fixed concept in such systems, but it is not a substitute for the runtime data model those workflows require.

| Typical assignment shape | A single scalar role value on a model. | Can support role records and assignable relationships, including multiple roles. |
| Change process | Role changes follow the application release process; storage or schema changes may also be needed depending on the design. | Role data can be updated through database-backed admin workflows without adding enum cases to code. |
| Integration considerations | Provides a scalar value for application use; ensure other tools and systems interpret it as intended. | Provides records and relationships that can be joined or managed as data; confirm the needs of reporting and other consumers. |
Neither design wins on every axis. Choose based on who must control role changes, how assignments and permissions work, and what the application’s other data consumers need.

Replacing role records does not automatically remove the need for permissions, user-role assignments, or administration screens. If the application needs multiple roles per user, permissions attached to roles, or runtime authorization management, model those requirements explicitly rather than assuming one enum value covers them.
For applications using Spatie’s Laravel Permission package, replacing its role or permission models has package-specific integration requirements: the replacement models must be configured and meet the relevant contracts. Consult Spatie’s model extension documentation before replacing package models. An enum for a fixed role label can coexist with database-backed permissions or assignments, but that arrangement needs a deliberate design.
What the change does—and does not—prove
The PHP and Laravel documentation establish how backed values and Eloquent enum casts work; they do not establish that switching a particular project from role records to enums made it faster, easier to maintain, or simpler to authorize. No measured performance comparison is available here. Treat fewer queries, faster checks, or maintenance savings as hypotheses to test against the application, not guaranteed outcomes of using an enum.
