IDrive is a stronger candidate when you need storage tiers, more flexible computer and user counts, server backup options, or a physical bulk-transfer service. The first catch: the older CrashPlan for Small Business plan is no longer available to new purchasers; compare current CrashPlan Endpoint with IDrive’s current plans instead.
Neither service is a universal winner. Choose based on the devices and workloads you must protect, the capacity and billing structure that suit your team, and how you would restore data after a serious loss.

Which plans are actually available to buy?
CrashPlan’s help center, updated July 27, 2026, lists CrashPlan for Small Business and Essential as legacy subscriptions that are unavailable to new purchasers. It lists CrashPlan Endpoint as an active subscription. That distinction matters: an existing customer may still have a legacy plan, but a new buyer should verify that the product and offer being quoted are for Endpoint. CrashPlan’s plan comparison sets out the current and legacy offerings.

How do storage and prices compare?
The billing models are different enough that a headline monthly price alone can mislead. CrashPlan Endpoint is sold per user with unlimited storage and one device per user. IDrive’s Team plan caps both the number of computers/users and storage by tier, while Business uses storage tiers and allows unlimited users. The following figures are displayed by the providers and were checked on October 11, 2026; offers, terms, and prices can change.
| Plan or tier | Capacity and coverage | Displayed price and billing basis |
|---|---|---|
| CrashPlan Endpoint | Unlimited storage; one device per user | $7.33 per user per month, billed annually at $88; or $6.58 per user per month on a two-year term, billed every two years at $158. The SMB pricing page states USD pricing for up to 249 users; organizations with 250 or more users should contact sales. |
| IDrive Team | Tiered by computers/users and storage; the displayed standard monthly options include five computers/five users with 5 TB, with larger tiers listed up to 500 computers/users and 500 TB. | The displayed standard monthly rate for the 5 TB tier is $11.99. Other tiers and term or promotional prices vary; check the current listing. |
| IDrive Business | Storage-based tiers; unlimited users and multiple computers/servers are listed. | The displayed standard monthly rate starts at 1.25 TB for $59.99. Promotional prices and term prices may differ. |
CrashPlan’s figures come from its SMB pricing page; IDrive’s figures come from its pricing page. Both pages may display promotions alongside standard pricing. IDrive says limited-time discounts are available and that over-limit usage can incur charges. Compare the renewal price, the full amount billed for the term, storage limits, and any overage rules—not a discounted first term against another provider’s standard rate.
Which service fits your devices and workloads?
CrashPlan for endpoint-focused teams
CrashPlan’s endpoint offering lists Windows, Mac, and Linux support. Its small-business page says new and changed files are backed up every fifteen minutes. It also describes self-service restores, administrator-pushed restores, device migration, and immutable backup. These are vendor descriptions, not independent performance or recovery test results. See CrashPlan’s endpoint backup information.

Before choosing it, check whether one device per user matches your staff’s actual setup and whether all required workloads are supported by the plan you can purchase. Do not assume that the legacy Small Business plan’s terms are the same as Endpoint’s.
IDrive for teams needing tier choices or broader backup options
IDrive’s small-business information highlights server backup, including database and virtualization workloads, as well as bare-metal disaster recovery with cloud replication. It also describes centralized web-based administration, subaccounts, and single sign-on (SSO). The exact workload and feature availability should be confirmed for the tier you plan to buy. IDrive’s small-business page describes these capabilities.
IDrive also offers IDrive Express, a physical shipment service for bulk backup or retrieval. That may be relevant when a large initial backup or recovery would be impractical over your internet connection, but check service limits, availability, and plan eligibility before relying on it.

How do retention and recovery differ?
CrashPlan Endpoint lists unlimited file-version retention and up to 90 days of deleted-file retention. These are separate limits: the first concerns retained versions of files, while the second concerns how long deleted files remain recoverable. CrashPlan describes both self-service and administrator-initiated restore paths; consider which one fits your recovery procedures.
IDrive’s small-business page describes bare-metal recovery and the physical IDrive Express retrieval option. Those are recovery capabilities, not evidence that its file-version or deleted-file retention behaves like CrashPlan’s. Verify the snapshot, retention, restore, and bare-metal terms for the specific IDrive plan and workload you need.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you check about security and administration?
CrashPlan describes TLS 1.2 in transit, AES-256 at rest, per-user encryption, two-factor authentication, and eligibility for a Business Associate Agreement. IDrive describes AES-256 encryption in transfer and storage, the option to select a private encryption key, centralized administration, and SSO. These are vendor statements; verify the configuration, eligibility, and administrative controls against your own security requirements rather than treating a feature list as an independent security assessment.

- Confirm whether private-key encryption affects account recovery or administrator access in the way your business expects.
- Check which users can initiate restores, approve them, or move protected devices.
- Ask whether the plan covers any regulated or contractual requirements your business has; a stated BAA eligibility is not by itself a compliance guarantee.
How should you choose between CrashPlan and IDrive?
| Your priority | More natural fit to investigate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Endpoint backup for a modest team, with uncapped storage and per-user billing | CrashPlan Endpoint | Its current plan listing specifies unlimited storage and one device per user. |
| Choosing among storage allowances and user/computer counts | IDrive Team or Business | Team tiers specify user/computer and storage limits; Business tiers are storage-based and list unlimited users. |
| Server, database, or virtualization workloads | IDrive, subject to plan verification | IDrive’s small-business page describes these server backup options. |
| Large initial transfer or bulk retrieval by shipped media | IDrive, subject to service and plan verification | IDrive describes its Express shipment service for bulk backup and retrieval. |
This is a fit-based comparison of the providers’ published plan structures, not a hands-on test. No matched independent comparison establishes which service backs up or restores faster, is more reliable, or provides better support. If speed or ease of recovery will decide the purchase, trial the service and restore representative files before committing.
IDrive publishes its own CrashPlan alternative comparison. Its claims about advantages for multiple-computer backup, snapshots, and mobile support are vendor-authored comparisons, not neutral independent findings. Use the plan documentation for the exact products you are considering to resolve those details.
