Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFirst identify what “not responding” means: a frozen laptop that is still on, a machine with no signs of power, a powered laptop with a blank screen, or one that reaches an error or recovery screen. A forced shutdown may help with a freeze, but it is not the same as resetting Windows or erasing a Mac. Start with reversible checks, then choose recovery steps that fit your device and protect your files.
Identify what the laptop is doing
Look for power and charging lights, fan noise, keyboard illumination, a startup logo, an error message, or a recovery menu. Note whether the display is completely blank or shows a blinking cursor. Think about what happened just before the problem began: an update, a newly connected accessory or display, a drop, liquid exposure, or a hardware change. These clues help distinguish power, display, startup, and software trouble, but they cannot establish a hardware diagnosis remotely.

- Frozen but powered on: The screen or controls no longer respond, but lights, fans, or other signs suggest the laptop is running.
- No signs of power: There are no apparent lights, sounds, or display activity. Check the power source and charging response before attempting software recovery.
- Powered on with a blank screen: The laptop appears to run, but nothing useful appears on its display. A blank screen alone is not a reason to erase or reset the computer.
- Startup error or recovery screen: The laptop gets far enough to show a logo, error, or recovery options. Use the available recovery environment rather than treating it as a no-power problem.
Try reversible checks first
If there are no signs of power
- Check that the outlet works and that the adapter and cable are firmly connected and undamaged. If you can, test another compatible outlet.
- Check whether the charging indicator changes when the laptop is connected. On a Mac, Apple advises trying another compatible cable or adapter if available and disconnecting accessories before retrying. Follow Apple’s instructions for a Mac that doesn’t turn on.
- If the laptop shows no response, follow the power-button procedure for its exact make and model. A button hold can force a shutdown or perform a manufacturer-specific power reset; it is not a universal procedure. Dell’s 10-second power-button instruction, for example, is for the models covered by its Inspiron and Vostro no-power guidance, not a sequence to apply to every laptop.
If it is frozen
Disconnect external accessories, then try the model-specific forced-shutdown procedure if the laptop remains unresponsive. Holding the power button interrupts the current session and can discard unsaved changes. It does not select Windows’ Reset this PC or erase a Mac’s startup disk. For device-specific procedures, consult the manufacturer’s guidance; ASUS troubleshooting guidance, for example, advises a forced shutdown for an unresponsive screen and disconnecting external devices.
If it is on but the screen is blank
On Windows, check that the laptop and any external display are powered and connected. Press Windows + Ctrl + Shift + B to try waking the graphics driver; then press Windows + P to cycle display modes. Disconnect external monitors and other peripherals and retry. Microsoft lists these checks in its blank-screen troubleshooting guide. A blinking cursor can indicate that UEFI or BIOS cannot find a boot device, which is different from a frozen display.

For a Mac, first determine whether it is actually powered on or simply failing during startup. If it is on, use the Mac recovery steps below when a startup symbol or other startup problem appears; do not erase it just because the screen is blank.
Know what each kind of reset does
People use “reset” for several different actions. A forced shutdown stops the current session and may lose unsaved work. Windows recovery options and Mac Recovery operate on the operating system or startup disk, with different consequences for files. Microsoft warns that “Some recovery options can result in data loss,” and recommends backing up important files before recovery in its Windows recovery options guide.

Recover Windows when it still starts or opens recovery
If Windows starts but is behaving badly
Choose a recovery option that addresses the likely change or failure before using Reset this PC. If the trouble began after an update, uninstalling the problematic update is an option; Microsoft says this does not affect personal files. System Restore, when available, rolls back system files and settings but not personal files. The available choices vary by Windows version and device.
If Windows will not start
Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) if it appears or is accessible. Choose Troubleshoot, then select the recovery option appropriate to the problem, such as uninstalling an update, a restore option if available, or Reset this PC. If the device is encrypted, Windows may require the BitLocker recovery key to access most WinRE recovery options. Locate the key before proceeding if possible.

Choose Reset this PC settings with care
| Choice | What it does | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Keep my files | Reinstalls Windows and preserves personal files, but removes apps and settings. | Back up important files first where possible; preserving files is not a substitute for a backup. |
| Remove everything | Removes personal files, apps, and settings while reinstalling Windows. | Use only if you understand that your files will be removed. |
| Cloud download | Downloads a fresh Windows copy. | Can help if local system files are corrupted or missing; it requires an internet connection. |
| Local reinstall | Uses Windows files already on the PC. | May be faster on a slow connection, but may not include the latest updates. |
If the reset screen stays black, do not assume the process has failed: Microsoft cautions that it can occasionally remain black for more than 15 minutes, and the device may restart itself. Manually restarting during the reset can cause it to fail. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions for the current steps and available choices.
If built-in recovery fails
A clean Windows reinstall from installation media removes everything on the selected drive. Before using it, back up what you can and make sure you understand which drive will be affected. If you need installation media, use another working PC to create it on a USB drive with at least 8 GB of capacity. Creating the media erases that USB drive, so use an empty one or copy its contents elsewhere first. Some manufacturers also provide recovery images with hardware-specific drivers and factory applications. Microsoft describes recovery and media options in its recovery guidance.

Use Mac Recovery without confusing repair and erasure
If the Mac will not turn on
Check the power cable for damage and make sure it is connected securely to the Mac and a working outlet. Try another compatible cable or adapter if available, and disconnect accessories before retrying. Apple advises holding the power button for about 10 seconds, releasing it, and then pressing it normally. If the Mac still will not turn on, Apple says it may need service. SMC reset guidance applies to older Intel-based Macs; it is not needed on Apple silicon.
Enter Recovery using the route for your Mac
- Apple silicon: Shut down the Mac, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. Choose Options, then Continue.
- Intel: Use the appropriate startup keyboard combination for the Recovery task. Apple’s instructions distinguish reinstalling the current macOS version, the latest compatible version, or the original or closest available version.
Apple explains the separate startup routes in its macOS Recovery instructions.

Repair a startup disk before considering erase
A flashing question-mark folder means “your computer’s startup disk is no longer available or doesn’t contain a working Mac operating system,” according to Apple’s explanation of the symbol. In Recovery, open Disk Utility and try to repair the startup disk. If repair succeeds but the symbol returns, reinstall macOS. If the disk does not appear or cannot be repaired, service may be needed.
Reinstall macOS or erase the disk
Reinstalling macOS from Recovery can preserve files and user settings, but Apple recommends backing up first and requires internet access. Keep a Mac laptop connected to its power adapter during an erase and reinstall. Erasing the startup disk removes information; it is a last resort for someone who has backed up or accepts losing the data. Follow Apple’s macOS reinstall instructions and instructions for erasing a Mac and reinstalling macOS for the applicable Mac and Recovery route.
Stop troubleshooting and seek service when needed
Contact the laptop manufacturer or a qualified service provider if the device still shows no power after checking a working outlet and compatible adapter, if there is physical damage or liquid exposure, or if the manufacturer’s recovery steps do not resolve the problem. For a Mac, a missing startup disk or one that Disk Utility cannot repair is also a reason to seek service. These are escalation signs, not a remote diagnosis; model-specific power, firmware, and repair procedures should come from the manufacturer.
