If the Wi‑Fi control is missing, investigate the adapter and its driver instead. If Wi‑Fi is on but there is no internet, test another device or network before changing laptop settings: the router, VPN or security software, or internet provider may be the problem.
Identify what “Wi‑Fi turned off” means
These symptoms point to different parts of the connection, so note what you see before trying more disruptive fixes.

- Wi‑Fi toggle is off: The wireless radio may simply be disabled in the operating system, by airplane mode, or by a laptop switch or key.
- Wi‑Fi option is missing: The wireless adapter may be disabled, not detected, or affected by a driver problem.
- Wi‑Fi is on, but no networks appear: Check range, the hardware switch, adapter status, and whether the adapter supports the network’s frequency band.
- The laptop connects to Wi‑Fi but has no internet: The wireless connection is working, but the router, internet service, VPN, or security software may be preventing access.
Wi‑Fi connection and internet access are separate stages. If another device cannot use the same network either, the problem is less likely to be limited to the laptop.
Turn Wi‑Fi back on in Windows 10 or 11
Check Wi‑Fi and airplane mode
- Open the taskbar network controls or go to Settings > Network & internet.
- Make sure Airplane mode is off, then turn Wi‑Fi on. Airplane mode disables wireless communications; Microsoft describes it as “a quick way to turn off all wireless communications on your PC.” Windows may retain the previous Wi‑Fi state while airplane mode is enabled, so check Wi‑Fi separately after turning airplane mode off. Check the laptop’s wireless switch or function key
Some laptops have a physical wireless switch or a keyboard function key that can disable Wi‑Fi. If the Wi‑Fi control is absent or will not turn on, check the laptop’s manual for the correct switch or key combination. Its location and operation vary by make and model, so do not assume a particular key works for every laptop. Microsoft’s Windows network troubleshooting steps also call out checking the hardware switch.

Check whether Windows detects the wireless adapter
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for the wireless adapter.
- If it is listed but disabled, enable it. If it is missing or shows an error, look up the correct driver on the support page for your exact laptop model.
Do not install a driver simply because its name looks similar. The laptop maker’s model-specific support page is the appropriate place to identify the driver. If you suspect a driver problem, secure a backup driver first, particularly if the laptop has no other way to get online. Microsoft says Windows can attempt to reinstall an adapter after it is uninstalled and the computer restarts, but that may not help if the necessary driver is unavailable. If Wi‑Fi is on but no networks appear
Move within range of the router, verify any physical wireless switch is on, and check that the adapter is enabled. If nearby networks appear but the one you need does not, the adapter may not support the frequency band that network uses. Avoid changing drivers or resetting Windows networking until these simpler checks are complete.

Run Windows’ network troubleshooter
On Windows 11, open Get Help and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Also check whether another phone or laptop can connect to the same network; that comparison helps distinguish a laptop problem from a network problem. Microsoft’s Windows troubleshooting guidance.

Use Network reset only as a late step
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings. Because it can undo network configuration, reserve it for cases where simpler checks have failed and the symptoms point to Windows networking rather than the router or internet service. Microsoft explains the reset’s effects.

Turn Wi‑Fi back on or troubleshoot it on a Mac
Switch Wi‑Fi on and check range
Use the Wi‑Fi status menu to turn Wi‑Fi on, then make sure the Mac is within range of the network. If the Wi‑Fi service is missing from Network settings, follow Apple’s guidance for a missing Wi‑Fi service rather than treating it as an ordinary connection failure.
If the Mac connects but has no internet
Check whether other devices can use the network. If the problem appears limited to the Mac, Apple recommends checking date and time, considering a macOS update when another network is available, and checking whether VPN or other security software is interfering. Restarting the Mac or router may also help where appropriate. Apple’s internet troubleshooting page, dated March 10, 2025, describes these checks, Wi‑Fi Recommendations, and Wireless Diagnostics.

Wi‑Fi Recommendations and Wireless Diagnostics can help identify connection issues where available. Recommendations are not available for personal hotspots or some enterprise security configurations, so their absence does not itself mean Wi‑Fi is broken. If the Mac works on another network, contact the administrator or internet provider responsible for the original network.

Try another device on the same Wi‑Fi, or connect the laptop to a different network. If the laptop works elsewhere, investigate the original router, network settings, or internet service. If several devices fail on the same network, contact the network administrator or internet provider. If only this laptop has trouble across networks, focus on its wireless switch, adapter, and driver.

If the laptop has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide a temporary wired connection for testing. Microsoft notes that Ethernet can help isolate Wi‑Fi or router connectivity trouble. It is a diagnostic or temporary wired workaround, not a way to turn Wi‑Fi back on.
