That vector is not a third everyday meaning of the word. It is one way language software represents text, while context helps a system infer which sense a sentence intends.
How can “Apple” mean a fruit or a company?
Words can have more than one sense. Language research explicitly distinguishes “apple (fruit)” from “apple (computer),” showing why the same written word can point to different things (ACL Anthology paper).

People use nearby words and the wider situation to work out which sense is intended. A computer can use language patterns in a similar way, but its answer is an inference from the text and the model—not an understanding guaranteed to be correct.
- “I ate an apple.” The verb “ate” points toward the fruit.
- “I bought an iPhone from Apple.” “iPhone” points toward the company.
These are illustrative examples, not results from a reported computer test. A system’s output depends on its model, training data, and task; the sources cited here provide no accuracy measurement for these sentences.

What does it mean to represent a word as a vector?
A vector is an ordered list of numbers. In a word embedding, text is mapped into such numerical representations so software can compare strings by their positions and relationships in a mathematical space. Apple describes NLEmbedding as “A map of strings to vectors, which locates neighboring, similar strings” (Apple Natural Language documentation).
In practical terms, strings used in similar ways can be near one another in the representation. That gives software a way to compare semantic similarity. It does not mean a vector is itself a meaning, or that one representation necessarily captures every sense of an ambiguous word.

Does a computer use one vector or the sentence around the word?
It depends on the representation. A static word embedding uses a stored representation for a word. A contextual representation takes surrounding language into account, so the representation can reflect how the word is used in a particular sentence. Apple’s Natural Language framework documents both text embeddings and contextual embeddings (Apple Natural Language documentation).
Apple Machine Learning Research’s 2018 explanation discusses word embeddings and the role of local context; it is useful background, not a current specification for Apple products (Apple Machine Learning Research). The distinction matters: a vector lookup by itself is not the same operation as resolving a word’s sense in a sentence.

What can Apple’s Natural Language framework do?
Apple’s framework offers several distinct language-analysis capabilities, including breaking text into paragraphs, sentences, and words; tagging linguistic features; identifying language and named entities; producing text or contextual embeddings; and supporting custom text classification or word tagging (Apple Natural Language documentation).
Those capabilities should not be conflated. A system that returns an embedding vector is producing a representation; tagging an entity or classifying text is a separate task. A vector request can also fail if the requested string is not present in the embedding: Apple’s vectorForString: reference says the method returns an array of doubles when a vector is available and nil otherwise (Apple API reference).

What the “Apple” example does—and does not—show
The fruit-versus-company contrast makes ambiguity easy to see, and a vector offers a mathematical way to represent text for comparison. But those facts alone do not establish that a particular computer was trained, tested on these sentences, or produced any specific output. No measured comparison or accuracy figure for this example is established by the cited sources.
The useful takeaway is narrower and more reliable: language systems can use patterns and context to estimate which sense a word has, while embeddings represent strings numerically. A vector is part of the machinery, not another meaning of “Apple,” and no system should be assumed to resolve every ambiguous word correctly.
