Laptop Wi-Fi Card Location: Find It Safely by Model

A laptop’s Wi-Fi card has no universal location. Use the service manual for your exact model to find its WLAN module, access steps, and approved replacement details.

A laptop’s Wi-Fi card—also called its WLAN or wireless module—has no universal location. If your model uses a separate, removable card, the manufacturer’s service manual shows where it sits and what must be removed to reach it. Find the manual for your exact laptop model and search for “WLAN,” “wireless card,” or “wireless module” before opening the case.

Find the Wi-Fi card in your exact laptop model

  1. Identify the full model. Check the label on the laptop, its system information, or the manufacturer’s support page. Include the model number or generation; similar-looking laptops can have different internal layouts.
  2. Get the manufacturer’s service or maintenance manual. Use the support page for that model rather than a guide for a related model.
  3. Search the manual for “WLAN card,” “wireless card,” or “WLAN module.” Open the removal or replacement procedure and examine its labeled internal diagram. The diagram and instructions are the best guide to the module’s position and access requirements.
  4. Check whether the manual identifies a separate module. A removable card is not guaranteed. If the manual does not list a separate WLAN module, do not assume another laptop’s layout applies.

When a separate card is shown, it may be a small board secured by a screw or bracket and connected to antenna leads. Treat that appearance only as a clue: location, mounting, and serviceability vary. The module may be under a cover or on the other side of the system board, and not every laptop has a user-removable card.

Why there is no single location

Manufacturer procedures show that access depends on the exact model. For example, the Dell Inspiron 15 3511 service manual requires service mode and base-cover removal before exposing its wireless card in an M.2 slot; removal involves a bracket screw and antenna leads. The Dell Vostro 5490 procedure requires removing the base cover and battery. The Latitude 5411 installation procedure shows its WLAN slot, card insertion, antenna reconnection, and bracket fastening.

HP’s model-specific maintenance guide also requires preparing the computer, removing the bottom cover, disconnecting the battery cable, and then handling the antenna covering, antenna leads, and module screw. MSI service guides likewise document WLAN locations and removal steps for particular layouts. These examples are not evidence that all laptops use an M.2 card, have two antennas, or permit card replacement. Use the applicable manual’s diagram and procedure, not a generic photo or an assumption that the card is beside the SSD.

WiFi 6E Wireless Card Intel AX210 NGW Bluetooth 5.3 Tri-Band 5400Mbps Network Adapter for Laptop Support Windows 10/11 (64bit) M.2/NGFF
  • 【Wi-Fi 6E】With Intel Wi-Fi 6E technology network adapter provides strong performance and good compatibility, while reducing power consumption and improving service life.
  • 【AX210 NGW Wireless LAN Card】Provides tri-band (6GHz, 5GHz and 2.4GHz) signal. Maximum speed up to 5374Mbps(2400Mbps @6GHz + 2400Mbps @5GHz + 574Mbps @2.4GHz).
  • 【Bluetooth 5.3】Based on Bluetooth 5.2, Bluetooth 5.3 adds LE enhanced connection/Host set Controller key length function/LE channel hierarchy function. Make Bluetooth 5.3 lower latency, stronger anti-interference, improve battery life.
  • 【Installation Requirements】For motherboards with Intel CPU and M.2 network slot, NGFF M2 2230 A/E key.Not supported CNVIo2 protocol M.2 slot and mini PCIe slot laptops.
  • 【Compatible System】Support Windows 11/10 64-bit, WiFi and Bluetooth drivers need to be installed on the running PC (search "AX210NGW" from Intel website to download and install wifi and Bluetooth drivers).

Before opening the case

  • Follow the exact manual’s safety steps and disassembly order. Even procedures from the same manufacturer can require different prerequisites.
  • Lenovo’s procedure warns: “Do not open your computer or attempt any repairs before reading the Important Product Information Guide.” Read the applicable safety documentation before beginning.
  • If the manual says the card is not user-serviceable, does not identify a separate module, or requires disassembly you are not equipped to perform, contact the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider.
  • Do not pull antenna wires to detach their connectors, and do not pry at the card without the model-specific instructions.

If you plan to replace the card

Confirm the full laptop model and the manufacturer-approved WLAN part before ordering. A similar-looking card is not proof of electrical, firmware, operating-system, or regulatory compatibility. HP’s guide says to use a module authorized for that computer by the regulator in the user’s country or region; its listed module descriptions include an Intel 9560 802.11b/g/n/a/ac (2 × 2) with Bluetooth 5 and an Intel AX211 Wi-Fi 6e with Bluetooth 5.2. Those are examples for applicable models, not universal upgrade recommendations.

Use the manual to identify the required fastener and tool. For instance, the cited HP procedure specifies a Phillips M2.0 × 2.5 screw, while Dell’s Inspiron 15 3511 guide specifies an M2x3 bracket screw. A precision Phillips screwdriver set may be useful, but the correct tip and screw requirements depend on the laptop. The service manual should determine what fits.
