Short answer: choose a desktop PC when the computer will stay in one place and you care most about comfort, performance per dollar, large or multiple displays, and future upgrades. Choose a laptop when you regularly move between home, work, classes, rooms, or trips and want the screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, and battery included.
Rising laptop prices do not automatically make a desktop cheaper. The fair comparison is the price of a complete, usable setup for the same workload. A desktop normally needs a monitor, keyboard, and mouse; a laptop already includes those essentials, although a desk-based laptop may eventually need a monitor, dock, or other accessories.

Why laptop prices are under pressure in 2026
Memory and storage costs are affecting computer prices, but the available evidence describes scenarios and market averages rather than a universal price increase for every laptop.

TrendForce’s conditional notebook scenario
In an analysis published March 10, 2026, TrendForce modeled a mainstream notebook with a US$900 manufacturer suggested retail price in the first quarter of 2025. Under normal conditions, DRAM and SSDs represented about 15% of the notebook’s bill of materials. TrendForce projected that share could exceed 30% in the first quarter of 2026.
#1 Best Overall
- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
If supply-chain margins were maintained, the model indicated that memory costs alone could require a retail increase of more than 30% for that example notebook. Adding CPU price increases could bring the modeled total increase close to 40%. This is not a forecast that every laptop will become 40% more expensive. It is a conditional calculation whose outcome depends on configuration, inventory, retailer pricing, region, and whether manufacturers absorb some of the cost.
TrendForce also cited Intel increases of more than 15% on certain entry-level and older-generation notebook processors, with additional increases planned for other platforms in the second quarter of 2026. Those figures apply to the specified processor groups, not to every laptop processor.
What the US PC average shows
Omdia reported that average US PC sell-in prices exceeded $1,000 in the second quarter of 2026, up 12.0% year over year. It attributed the pressure mainly to DRAM and NAND constraints and said consumer PC average selling prices rose 9.7% in that quarter.
These are aggregate US industry measures at the manufacturer-to-channel level, not retail quotes and not a laptop-versus-desktop comparison. TrendForce’s modeled notebook scenario and Omdia’s US sell-in statistics cover different periods, scopes, and measurements. Use them to understand cost pressure, then check current local prices for the exact configurations you are considering.
Compare a complete setup, not a bare computer
A laptop price usually includes a screen, keyboard, pointing device, webcam, speakers, wireless networking, and battery. A desktop price usually covers the computer tower alone. Comparing a $900 laptop with a $900 desktop therefore gives the desktop an artificial advantage until you add its missing equipment.
| Cost or capability | Desktop setup | Laptop setup |
|---|---|---|
| Computer chassis | Desktop tower or small-form-factor computer | Laptop with built-in battery |
| Display | Monitor purchased separately | Built-in display; external monitor optional |
| Keyboard and pointing device | Keyboard and mouse usually separate | Built-in keyboard and trackpad |
| Camera, speakers, wireless | May require separate or upgraded accessories | Normally integrated |
| Desk-based comfort | Easy to choose a large display and full-size peripherals | Often improved with an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, or dock |
| Portability | Designed to remain installed | Designed to move, subject to weight, battery life, and charger requirements |
| Internal upgrades | Component access varies, but CPU or motherboard, graphics card, memory, and storage may be replaceable | Usually more limited; some models permit memory or storage changes, while others do not |
For a fair calculation, write down the accessories you would actually buy in the first year. Include the monitor and input devices for a desktop. If you intend to use a laptop as a fixed workstation, include the external display, dock, keyboard, and mouse that make that arrangement comfortable. Microsoft notes that those accessories can turn a laptop into a workstation, but they are additional spending.
The decision factors that settle the form-factor choice
Where the computer will live
If the machine will remain on one desk, a desktop has the natural advantage: it can use a larger display, full-size peripherals, wired networking, and a case designed for sustained operation. If you move the computer between rooms, an office, a campus, or trips, a laptop avoids transporting a separate screen and accessories.

Count actual moves rather than hypothetical ones. A laptop bought for occasional travel may be poor value if it spends nearly every day closed on one desk. Conversely, a desktop is impractical when you need the same machine in two locations and cannot maintain a second setup.
What comfort means for your work
Long sessions of writing, spreadsheets, programming, editing, or research often benefit from a large monitor, adjustable viewing height, and a separate keyboard. A desktop lets you select those pieces independently. A laptop can provide the same arrangement when connected to a monitor and peripherals, but the accessory cost and desk complexity reduce the simplicity that initially justified the laptop.
Microsoft’s US comparison guide rates desktops higher for comfort, price-to-performance, and upgrade flexibility, while rating laptops higher for portability and lower desk-space requirements. Its guidance is editorial rather than an independently tested benchmark, but it captures the practical trade-off: portability can add cost, and a laptop’s built-in screen is smaller unless you connect another display.
How much performance you need per dollar
Desktops generally provide more processing and graphics capability for the same computer budget because less of the cost goes toward a battery, compact cooling system, hinges, keyboard, trackpad, and display. HP’s US category guide says affordable desktops can offer more processing power and functionality than affordable laptops of a similar grade. Treat that as a broad category observation, not a guarantee for every pair of machines.
The difference matters most for workloads that run for long periods or use a discrete graphics processor: compiling large projects, rendering, 3D work, local data processing, and demanding games. For web applications, office documents, video calls, and streaming, a well-configured laptop may already be fast enough, so paying for desktop-class headroom can have little practical benefit.
Whether upgrades are part of your plan
A desktop can make it easier to replace or add memory, storage, a graphics card, or other components as needs change. HP lists CPU and motherboard, graphics card, memory, and storage among desktop upgrade options. The exact possibilities depend on the case, power supply, motherboard, cooling, and operating-system support.
Upgradeability has value only if you expect to use it. A buyer who keeps a computer until replacement may gain more from a reliable, appropriately configured machine than from an empty expansion slot. An upgrade can also require new power, cooling, or compatible parts, so do not assume every future change will cost less than buying a new computer.

How much space and setup effort you can accept
A desktop needs a permanent location, a power outlet, cable management, and enough room for its display and peripherals. A laptop can be closed and stored, making it useful in a small home or shared room. That convenience has a value even when the laptop is not carried outside.
When a desktop PC makes more sense
You work primarily at one location
A fixed workstation is the clearest desktop case. You can invest in an ergonomic chair and monitor position, choose a display size that suits your eyes and applications, and leave the system connected to power and accessories. There is no need to pack a charger or reconnect a display every time you start work.
You want maximum capability for a defined budget
When two complete setups must perform the same job, a desktop often leaves more of the budget for the processor, graphics hardware, memory, and storage. This is particularly useful when the workload is limited by sustained performance rather than by mobility.
You expect to change parts
Choose a desktop with an accessible case and a suitable power supply if you know you will add storage, memory, or graphics capability. Before buying, check the motherboard’s memory slots, storage connectors, graphics-card clearance, power-supply capacity, and cooling options. A small or highly integrated desktop may not offer the same expansion as a conventional tower.
You need several large displays
Desktops make multi-monitor arrangements straightforward when the graphics hardware provides the required outputs. They also avoid sacrificing the laptop’s built-in display when an external monitor is attached. Verify the computer’s supported resolutions and refresh rates before purchasing displays.

You regularly move between locations
A laptop combines the computer and primary controls in one device. Carrying it between home, an office, classes, or trips is simpler than moving a desktop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, and cables. The practical benefit depends on weight, charger size, battery condition, and the availability of power where you work.
You want one purchase with fewer accessories
For a mobile user, the built-in screen, keyboard, trackpad, camera, speakers, wireless networking, and battery can outweigh a desktop’s performance advantage. A laptop can be ready for a video call or a document session without assembling a separate workstation.

Your space is temporary or shared
Students, renters, and people who share a table may prefer a computer that can be put away after use. A laptop also lets you change working locations when a room is occupied, provided the new location has a suitable surface and power.
You can tolerate a less flexible repair path
Compact design limits what can be replaced. Some laptops have soldered memory, proprietary batteries, or storage that is difficult to access. Check the manufacturer’s service documentation and warranty terms if repairability matters. A laptop that cannot be upgraded may need earlier replacement when its memory or storage becomes inadequate.

Match the choice to common workloads
Office work, web use, and video meetings
Start with the location requirement. A mobile employee or student benefits from the laptop’s integrated camera and battery. A home-based worker who rarely moves can use a desktop with a larger monitor and more comfortable peripherals. If video meetings are central, budget for a good camera and microphone whichever form factor you select.
Programming and technical work
Developers who carry their environment between locations should prioritize a laptop with enough memory and storage for the tools they use. Developers who compile continuously or run several virtual machines may prefer a desktop’s sustained cooling and easier memory or storage expansion. A laptop dock and external monitor can bridge the two patterns, but add to the total cost.
Photo, video, 3D, and other creator workloads
Check the application’s processor, graphics, memory, storage, and display requirements rather than relying on the word “creator.” A desktop generally offers more room for high-performance cooling, large storage, and a color-accurate monitor. A laptop is justified when the editing system must travel to a set, studio, classroom, or client site.
Gaming
A desktop usually offers more graphics performance per dollar and a clearer upgrade path. A gaming laptop trades that efficiency for the ability to play away from a desk. Compare the complete package, including the display’s resolution and refresh rate, because the laptop’s screen is part of its price while a desktop gaming display is not.

Family or shared use
A desktop in a common area can be easier for several people to use and maintain. A laptop supports private use and can move between users, but it is more likely to be carried, dropped, or used in unsuitable locations. Consider who will manage backups, charging, accounts, and physical security.

A step-by-step way to compare current offers
- Record where the computer will be used. Write down the normal location, the number of moves per week or month, and whether you need the same files and applications in both places. Frequent movement is a requirement, not a minor preference.
- Define the workload. List the applications, number of browser tabs, expected multitasking, games or creative projects, external displays, and storage needs. Use the heaviest regular task to set the minimum specification.
- Set a complete-setup budget. For a desktop, reserve money for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers or headset, webcam if needed, and operating-system licensing when it is not included. For a laptop workstation, reserve money for an external monitor, dock, keyboard, and mouse only if you will actually use them.
- Compare like with like. Match processor class, memory capacity, storage capacity, graphics capability, display quality, warranty coverage, and included software as closely as possible. A thin laptop with integrated graphics is not a fair comparison with a desktop containing a discrete graphics card.
- Check upgrade and service details. Confirm which desktop components can be replaced and which laptop parts are soldered or proprietary. Verify the number of storage bays, memory slots, display outputs, wireless standard, ports, battery replacement policy, and warranty service in your region.
- Price local listings on the same day. Use your country’s retailers and account for taxes, delivery, promotions, and return rules. Industry averages do not tell you what a specific configuration costs in your market.
- Calculate the two-year and longer-term plan. Add likely accessories and any upgrade you genuinely expect to buy. Do not assign a dollar value to an upgrade path you are unlikely to use, and do not assume an inexpensive initial desktop remains inexpensive after adding a high-quality monitor and peripherals.
- Make the portability decision last. If the complete prices are close, choose based on how often you will move the computer and how much you value an ergonomic, expandable desk setup. Those benefits are difficult to recover after purchase.
Common mistakes when laptop prices rise
Buying urgently because of a forecast
TrendForce’s near-40% figure is a conditional scenario for a modeled notebook, not a deadline to purchase any laptop immediately. Supply, inventory, promotions, and regional pricing can produce a very different result. Buy when you have a defined need and a fair configuration, rather than treating one forecast as a universal countdown.
Comparing a tower with a fully equipped laptop
A desktop tower without a monitor and input devices is not equivalent to a laptop ready for use. Add the missing equipment before deciding that the desktop is cheaper. The reverse mistake also occurs: adding a premium monitor and dock to a laptop can make a mobile computer an expensive permanent workstation.
Overvaluing theoretical upgrades
An upgrade slot is not a saving unless you will use it and compatible parts remain available. Check the likely cost of the future component, installation, cooling, and power requirements. A desktop bought for upgrades should have the supporting hardware to make those upgrades practical.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIgnoring the cost of comfort
A small built-in screen may be acceptable for travel but tiring for eight-hour desk sessions. A desktop monitor, or an external monitor connected to a laptop, can materially change the experience. Include the display size, height adjustment, keyboard layout, pointing device, and camera position in your decision.
Assuming every machine in a category is interchangeable
“Desktop” includes compact integrated systems and large upgradeable towers; “laptop” includes thin mobile models and heavy performance machines. Compare the actual ports, thermals, battery, display, repair options, and included accessories rather than relying on the label.
What the price evidence means for your purchase
The 2026 data supports a cautious conclusion: computer costs are under pressure, but no source establishes a single laptop price increase that applies to every market or model. TrendForce’s notebook calculation shows how memory and processor costs could flow through to retail pricing under specific assumptions. Omdia’s US figures show that average PC prices were already higher, but they combine laptop and desktop products and measure sell-in prices.
Consequently, the right response is comparison rather than panic. If you need mobility, the laptop’s included equipment may make it the lower-cost usable solution even when its sticker price rises. If you work at one desk and need more performance, a desktop may deliver greater capability and comfort, provided you budget for the display and peripherals.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose a desktop when the computer stays in one place, you want a large or multi-monitor setup, sustained performance matters, and you are prepared to manage separate peripherals.
- Choose a laptop when you move locations regularly, need one self-contained computer, have limited desk space, or value an integrated camera, battery, keyboard, and display more than maximum performance per dollar.
- Choose a desktop plus a laptop only when the two roles are genuinely different and the cost of maintaining two systems is justified; the available evidence does not establish a universal value advantage for that arrangement.
- Delay the purchase briefly to compare local listings when your need is not urgent, but do not assume a market forecast guarantees a later discount or increase.
There is no universal best-value model without a country, budget, workload, and matched live prices. The strongest answer comes from pricing the complete setup you will actually use and giving portability the weight it deserves.
