Use your laptop’s touchpad when portability, gestures and a centrally placed pointer suit your work. Add an external mouse when its shape, separate placement or feel gives you better control. Neither is the right choice for everyone: comfort depends on the device, pointer settings and how your workspace is arranged.
Touchpad or mouse: which fits your work?
For everyday laptop use, start with the built-in touchpad: it is always with the computer and needs no separate surface. Choose an external mouse if you prefer its hand feel, want to place the pointer independently of the keyboard, or find it easier for the actions you do most. You can also switch between them—for example, use the touchpad while travelling and a mouse at a desk.

There is no established universal winner for speed, precision or comfort. Try both with your usual tasks and consider the trade-offs below rather than assuming one device is inherently better.
| Consideration | Laptop touchpad | External mouse |
|---|---|---|
| Portability and setup | Built into the laptop; no extra device or surface to carry. | Must be carried separately and needs a usable surface or suitable placement. |
| Gestures | May support multi-finger actions, depending on the touchpad and software. | Provides mouse pointing; the touchpad gesture examples do not necessarily apply. |
| Fit and feel | No separate device to fit to your hand, but it may not feel comfortable for every person or task. | Can be chosen for hand size and shape; a poor fit, tight grip or unsuitable sensitivity can be uncomfortable. |
| Space and reach | Positioned centrally on the laptop, in front of the user. | Needs room; placement too far from the keyboard can create an awkward reach. |
| Control for your tasks | May suit users who prefer its surface and gestures. | May suit users who prefer a separate pointer and its hand feel. |
When a laptop touchpad makes sense
Travel and compact workspaces
The touchpad is the simpler option when you want to travel light or do not have room for a mouse. Because it is part of the laptop, it also stays in a central position rather than requiring a reach to one side.

Gesture-based interaction
Touchpads may combine pointer control with multi-touch gestures. Microsoft describes examples including two-finger tapping for right-click, two-finger panning, pinch-to-zoom and press-and-slide dragging. Which actions are available depends on the particular touchpad and software; not every laptop supports the same gestures. Windows Precision Touchpads also support system-level features such as finger tracking and palm detection. Microsoft’s touchpad interaction documentation explains these capabilities.
When an external mouse may suit you better
You prefer its shape or feel
A mouse can be selected to fit your hand, but shape alone does not guarantee comfort. Check that it supports a relaxed grip and lets you keep your wrist in a neutral, straight position. If the mouse feels too large or small, encourages a tight grip, or requires an awkward wrist angle, try a different design or return to the touchpad.

You want separate placement
A mouse lets you position the pointer away from the laptop’s built-in touchpad. That flexibility is useful only if the placement works: keep it close to the keyboard rather than reaching far to the side. The OSHA workstation guidance recommends keeping the pointer or mouse close to the keyboard and using a neutral wrist posture.

Ergonomic guidance focuses on fit, posture and reach—not on declaring one pointing device best for everyone. OSHA recognizes touchpads and other pointing devices as possible alternatives for some tasks. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) likewise recommends trying designs and choosing one that fits the hand and supports a neutral wrist position.

- Your hand can relax in comfort hour after hour with this ergonomically designed mouse. Its contoured shape with soft rubber grips, gently curved sides and broad palm area give you the support you need for effortless control all day long.
- You’ve got the control to do more, faster. Flipping through photo albums and Web pages is a breeze, especially for right-handers—with three standard buttons plus Back/Forward buttons that you can also program to switch applications, go full screen and more. And side-to-side scrolling plus zoom gives you the power to scroll horizontally and vertically through your music library, maps and Facebook feeds, and zoom in and out of photos and budget spreadsheets with a click.* * Requires Logitech SetPoint software (Windows) or Logitech Control Center software (Mac OS X)
- Two years of battery life practically eliminates the need to replace batteries. ** The On/Off switch helps conserve power, smart sleep mode extends battery life and an indicator light eliminates surprises. ** Battery life may vary based on user and computing conditions.
- The tiny Logitech Unifying receiver stays in your laptop. There’s no need to unplug it when you move around, so there’s less worry of it being lost. And you can easily add compatible wireless mice and keyboards to the same wireless receiver.
- Keep an external mouse close to the keyboard so you do not have to reach awkwardly.
- Keep your wrist straight and relaxed; avoid a tight grip and use light-touch control.
- Adjust pointer sensitivity to a comfortable level.
- Where your setup allows, consider a centrally placed mouse in front of you. A cordless design can offer more placement options.
- Use keyboard shortcuts for actions that do not need pointing, and consider alternating hands where practical.
CCOHS discusses several alternatives, including traditional, trackball, central, joystick and vertical designs. These are options to consider for fit and placement, not evidence that a particular device prevents injury. Its guidance also notes that evidence on wrist rests is inconclusive, so a wrist rest should not be treated as a proven way to prevent injury. See CCOHS guidance on mouse selection and CCOHS guidance on mouse location.

Before switching devices because the touchpad appears broken, check its software. For Windows 10 or Windows 11, Microsoft says a touchpad problem may involve a missing or outdated driver. Its documented troubleshooting steps are:

- If updating does not help, use Device Manager to uninstall the touchpad device, then restart the computer so Windows can attempt to download the driver again.
- If the problem continues, contact your computer manufacturer.
These steps are specific to Windows. Follow Microsoft’s touchpad troubleshooting instructions for the current details.
