Compare the built-in screen with an external display and note whether the lines appear before the operating system loads. Those clues help narrow the next step, but persistent lines or visible damage need a model-specific repair assessment.
What horizontal lines can indicate
There is no single cause for every pattern. Lines and distorted colors can indicate a screen problem or another hardware issue. In particular, HP describes multiple jagged horizontal or vertical lines, or large white or black areas, as patterns associated with a cracked LCD. That damage may be visible during startup before Windows loads; HP says a screen with this cracked-LCD pattern must be replaced and recommends authorized repair. Intermittent lines can also be software-related in a narrow set of cases. LG’s guide, dated October 12, 2023, addresses lines that appear and disappear at the bottom of the LCD on certain LG laptops. It identifies Intel Panel Self Refresh, a power-saving technology, and a video-driver error as possible causes. That guidance is limited to the models it lists, not a universal fix. LG Support

How to narrow down the cause
Inspect the pattern without pressing the display
Note whether the lines stay in one place or come and go, whether they cover a narrow band or a large area, and whether there is visible cracking or impact damage. Do not press, twist, or squeeze the screen to test it. Multiple jagged lines or large white or black regions warrant prompt repair assessment.

Compare the laptop screen with an external display
If available, connect a known-good monitor or TV with a compatible cable and port. A clear image on the external display while the built-in screen still has lines points attention toward the laptop’s internal display path. It does not, by itself, tell you whether the LCD panel or an internal connection is at fault. If both displays show artifacts, graphics or software causes remain possible. An external display can also serve as a temporary screen, but it does not repair the laptop’s built-in display.

Check whether lines appear before the operating system starts
Look for the lines during startup or in the computer’s firmware or diagnostics screen, if available. Lines visible there are less likely to be caused solely by a Windows application or driver. This is a clue, not a diagnosis: some hardware and display-path faults require model-specific inspection.

If the symptom began after a software or driver update, use the laptop maker’s support instructions for your exact model and operating system. Avoid unknown third-party driver downloads. Dell’s general Windows guidance suggests checking the recommended display resolution, resetting the graphics driver, considering a rollback if the issue began after a driver update, and using Safe Mode to check whether software or services running normally are involved. LG’s Panel Self Refresh steps apply only to listed models
LG names the 17Z90P, 16ZD90P, 14T90P, and 16T90P model families for the intermittent bottom-of-screen symptom in its guide. On those models, LG recommends turning off Panel Self Refresh and Display Power Savings in Intel Graphics Command Center; if the lines persist, it suggests reinstalling or updating the graphics driver. Menu labels may differ by driver version. Do not assume these settings apply to another laptop or to lines with a different pattern. LG Support

Arrange model-specific repair help if the display is visibly cracked, the lines persist across startup and normal use, or troubleshooting does not resolve them. Check warranty status and the manufacturer’s repair process before opening the laptop or buying a replacement panel. A clear external display may help focus the diagnosis on the internal display path, but it cannot identify a particular part without inspection. HP recommends authorized repair for a damaged screen.
