RAM determines how much work your laptop can keep active at once; storage holds Windows, apps, games, and files between sessions. For gaming, 16 GB of RAM is a practical starting point in guidance from Intel and Lenovo, while heavier multitasking or content creation may call for 32 GB. There is no single storage capacity that fits everyone: estimate what you keep locally and leave room for updates and new files.
RAM and storage do different jobs
RAM is the laptop’s short-term working memory. It holds the information your operating system and open apps are using. More RAM can help when you keep many demanding apps or browser tabs open at once, but it does not replace a faster processor or graphics hardware.

Storage is the longer-term space for Windows, applications, games, downloads, photos, and project files. It remains there when the laptop is off. Storage capacity affects how much you can keep on the laptop; it is not the same as RAM and does not directly determine how many tasks can stay active smoothly.

Microsoft lists 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage as Windows 11 minimum requirements. Those numbers indicate a baseline for the operating system, not a recommendation for comfortable work, study, or gaming. Microsoft also notes that updates and some features may require additional storage, so a laptop with only the minimum available space can quickly become constrained.

Application requirements can be substantially higher. For Photoshop 27.x and later, Adobe lists 8 GB RAM minimum and 16 GB or more recommended. Adobe also lists 10 GB of available disk space minimum and 100 GB recommended, and calls for a fast internal SSD for installation. These figures apply to Photoshop, not every work or study laptop. Adobe’s page says, “Use recommended system specifications for optimum performance.”
How much RAM do you need?
Start with the programs you use and how many you run at the same time. A browser with many tabs, video meetings, office apps, creative software, and games can all compete for working memory. The figures below are guidance from the named sources, not a guarantee of performance.

- Actual memory speed may vary depending on the system, CPU, motherboard, BIOS settings, and supported memory configuration. DDR4 3200MHz modules may operate at lower speeds such as 2933MHz or 2666MHz when supported by the host system. Please check your device specifications and compatibility before purchase.

| Use | RAM guidance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 baseline | 4 GB minimum (Microsoft) | This is the operating system minimum, not a comfortable workload recommendation. |
| Photoshop 27.x and later | 8 GB minimum; 16 GB or more recommended (Adobe) | These requirements are for Photoshop; other creative apps may differ. |
| Many modern games | Around 16 GB as a practical starting point (Lenovo) | Check each game’s requirements and consider the rest of the laptop configuration. |
| Newer games with background apps or streaming software | 16 GB can support this use (Intel) | Game, graphics, processor, and cooling requirements still matter. |
| Heavier multitasking or content creation | 32 GB is suited to these workloads (Intel) | Whether you need it depends on your apps and how much you run at once. |
For work and study
There is no universal RAM figure for every student or office workload. A laptop used mainly for documents and a few browser tabs has different demands from one running video calls, many tabs, large spreadsheets, design software, or development tools simultaneously. Check the requirements for your most demanding applications and choose with the way you actually multitask in mind. Photoshop’s 16 GB-or-more recommendation is one demanding creative-app example, not a general rule for all work.
For gaming
Intel’s gaming-laptop guidance says 16 GB can support newer, more resource-intensive games alongside background apps and streaming software. It identifies 32 GB as suited to heavier multitasking and content creation. Lenovo describes around 16 GB as a practical starting point for many modern games. Check the requirements of the games you play: RAM alone does not determine frame rates or whether a laptop can run a game well. Graphics hardware, processor, and cooling matter too.

How much storage do you need?
Base storage on the size and number of apps, games, and files you want available locally. The operating system, installed applications, and updates also use space, so do not plan to fill the drive to capacity.
- Mostly documents and everyday apps: estimate the files and applications you expect to keep on the laptop, then leave room for Windows updates and future additions. The available figures do not establish one ideal capacity for every work or study user.
- Creative applications: Adobe lists 100 GB of available disk space recommended for Photoshop 27.x and later, compared with 10 GB minimum, and specifies a fast internal SSD for installation. This is Photoshop-specific guidance, not a universal storage requirement.
- Large game or project libraries: Lenovo gives about 1 TB of SSD storage as one option for large game files. It is an example, not a minimum; estimate the sizes of the games and projects you keep installed or stored locally.
An external SSD can provide portable storage, but it does not increase the laptop’s internal capacity. For apps that call for an internal SSD, check the application’s installation requirements rather than assuming an external drive is an equivalent substitute.

Check upgradeability before buying or upgrading
Do not assume a laptop’s RAM or internal storage can be replaced or expanded. Some models use soldered memory, and some have no spare internal drive slot. Compatibility depends on the exact model and configuration, not just the laptop brand or a broad product family.

Use the laptop manufacturer’s specifications or a model-specific compatibility lookup. Crucial’s compatibility tool searches by manufacturer and model, and its guidance notes that results depend on the laptop’s capabilities and the component selected: Crucial Advisor. A product listing for a 16 GB DDR4-3200 SODIMM, for example, names a compatible Acer configuration; that does not mean the module fits other Acer laptops or other models.
Quick Recap
A practical way to choose
- List your actual apps and games. Check the requirements for the most demanding ones rather than treating Windows’ minimum as a target.
- Account for simultaneous use. Consider whether you keep many tabs open, attend calls while using other apps, stream while gaming, or work with large projects.
- Estimate local storage. Add the space needed for Windows, installed apps, games, and files you want available offline; leave headroom for updates and new content.
- Check the exact laptop configuration. Confirm RAM and drive specifications and determine whether either component can be upgraded before you pay for an upgrade or choose a lower-capacity model.
