A laptop cooling pad is worth considering when your computer runs hot during sustained gaming or other demanding work, especially if its bottom intake vents line up with the pad’s fans. It is not a guaranteed fix: results depend on the laptop, its airflow design, the pad and the machine’s condition, and the added fans can be noisy. First clear the vents and use a hard, flat surface; if heat or performance problems persist, a well-fitted pad may help.
What a laptop cooler can—and cannot—do
A cooling pad places the laptop on a raised platform, usually with powered fans that move air toward the laptop’s underside. That extra airflow can help some machines shed heat under sustained load. A stand without fans may also raise the laptop and leave more room around its intakes.

Neither accessory repairs dust buildup, a failing internal fan or another internal cooling fault. A pad is best treated as supplemental airflow, not as a repair or a guaranteed performance upgrade. Laptop airflow designs vary, so a pad that helps one model may have little effect on another.

Published tests do not establish a universal temperature drop. The results below come from different laptops, workloads and test methods, so they should not be compared as if they were one standardized trial.
#1 Best Overall
- Ultra-Portable: Slim, portable, and light weight allowing you to protect your investment wherever you go
- Ergonomic Comfort: Doubles as an ergonomic stand with two adjustable height settings
- Optimized for Laptop Carrying: The metal mesh provides your laptop with a stable laptop carrying surface
- Ultra-Quiet Fans: Three ultra-quiet fans create a noise-free environment for you
- Extra Usb Ports: Extra USB port and power switch design allows for connecting more USB devices. Warm Tips: The packaged cable is USB to USB connection. Type C connection devices need to prepare an Type C to USB adapter
| Test | Temperature result | Performance or noise result |
|---|---|---|
| Laptop Mag: 12 pads tested across three laptops; publication year not verified | 13°F average internal-temperature reduction across its test group; some individual pad results were closer to 1–2°F | Average benchmark performance improved by less than 2%; the GPU-intensive gaming test did not gain a full additional frame per second. Noise measured 48–55 dB at maximum fan speed in its test environment. |
| Notebookcheck: one 15.6-inch MSI GP65 running The Witcher 3, tested with and without a Havit pad in 2020 | Average CPU temperature changed from 92°C to 80°C; average GPU temperature changed from 76°C to 70°C | Measured noise changed from 53.9 to 59.2 dB(A). |
The Notebookcheck result is evidence that a pad can make a meaningful difference in a particular setup, not a forecast for every gaming laptop. That test also notes that results vary, particularly on laptops with smaller bottom intake grilles. Laptop Mag’s much smaller changes on some combinations make the same point from another direction: the laptop-pad pairing matters.
Both reports make noise part of the trade-off. If you work or play in a quiet room, consider whether the pad’s fans will be distracting, not just whether they can move air.

- Dual USB Hub: With a built-in dual USB hub, the laptop fan enables you to connect additional USB devices to your laptop, providing extra connectivity options for your peripherals. Warm tips: The packaged cable is a USB-to-USB connection. Type C connection devices require a Type C to USB adapter. Please plug the cooling pad's USB cable into a 5V 1A adapter for best performance; otherwise, the fans may fail to spin or run at very low speed.
- Whisper-Quiet Operation: Enjoy a noise-free and interference-free environment with super quiet fans, allowing you to focus on your work or entertainment without distractions.
- Enhanced Cooling Performance: The laptop cooling pad features 5 built-in fans (big fan: 4.72-inch, small fans: 2.76-inch), all with blue LEDs. 2 On/Off switches enable simultaneous control of all 5 fans and LEDs. Simply press the switch to select 1 fan working, 4 fans working, or all 5 working together.
- Ergonomic Design: The laptop cooling stand also serves as an ergonomic stand, offering 6 adjustable height settings that enable you to customize the angle for optimal comfort during gaming, movie watching, or working for extended periods. Ideal gift for both the back-to-school season and Father's Day.
- Secure and Universal Compatibility: Designed with 2 stoppers on the front surface, this laptop cooler prevents laptops from slipping and keeps 12-17 inch laptops—including Apple Macbook Pro Air, HP, Alienware, Dell, ASUS, and more—cool and secure during use.
When a cooling pad is most likely to be worthwhile
- You use the laptop under sustained load. Long gaming sessions and other demanding workloads are the clearest reasons to consider added airflow.
- The laptop takes air in through the bottom. A pad can only direct useful airflow if its fans correspond reasonably well to the laptop’s intake layout.
- Heat is accompanied by a practical problem. Persistent heat-related performance issues make the case stronger than warmth alone, particularly if the laptop otherwise sits on a clear, hard surface.
- The pad can fit without blocking exhaust. Extra airflow is not useful if the platform or its placement obstructs the laptop’s own exhaust vents.
If temperatures and performance are stable during your usual workload, the evidence gives little reason to expect a cooling pad to produce a noticeable upgrade. You might still value an adjustable stand for its height or tilt, but that is a separate ergonomic benefit.
Check fit before choosing a pad
- Locate the vents. Check the laptop’s underside and sides to identify its air intakes and exhausts. Do not assume all vents are intakes.
- Compare the pad’s fan placement. Look for fans that direct air toward the laptop’s intake area. Confirm that the pad will not cover exhaust vents.
- Check physical compatibility. Confirm the laptop fits securely, the pad supports its size and weight, and any tilt or height adjustment suits your desk.
- Account for fan noise. Active cooling adds another noise source. Adjustable speed may be useful if you want to trade airflow for quieter operation.
- Compare with a simple stand. If your main goal is elevation rather than active airflow, a stand may meet that need without powered fans.
These checks matter more than buying a pad simply because it is marketed for gaming. The appropriate option depends on your specific laptop’s vent layout and the problem you are trying to solve.

Try this before buying
- Place the laptop on a hard, flat surface and make sure its intake and exhaust vents are clear.
- If it still runs hot during your normal sustained workload, record CPU and GPU temperatures and note any performance symptoms.
- Compare readings with and without a pad under the same workload and conditions. HP recommends keeping the comparison consistent; a change in workload or room conditions can make the results misleading.
- If a pad improves the result enough to matter, weigh that benefit against its noise and desk footprint.
- If you suspect dust buildup or an internal cooling fault, follow model-specific maintenance guidance or seek appropriate service instead of relying on an external accessory.
Temperature readings are most useful as a comparison of the same laptop under the same conditions. A single number, without context about workload and performance, does not show whether a pad has solved a real problem.

A laptop cooler can be worthwhile for a hot-running laptop under sustained heavy use when the pad’s fans align with its bottom intakes and leave exhaust unobstructed. Because results vary and extra fan noise is possible, first improve basic airflow and check for maintenance issues. If those steps do not address a genuine heat or performance problem, choose a pad for fit—not the assumption that every laptop will run dramatically cooler.
