To rotate a monitor to portrait orientation in Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display, select the monitor, and choose a portrait option from Display orientation. Then physically turn the monitor: the Windows setting rotates the picture, not the panel or its stand.
Rotate a monitor to portrait in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Display. Microsoft’s Windows display settings explains the display controls for Windows 11 and Windows 10.
- If you have multiple displays, select the monitor you want to rotate in the display diagram. Choose Identify to show each display’s assigned number on its screen and match it to the diagram.
- Open the Display orientation drop-down and choose the portrait orientation offered for that display.
- Physically rotate the monitor into portrait position. Check that its stand or mount supports the position before turning it.
- Review the image and resolution. If the result is unexpected, confirm that you changed the intended display and select the resolution marked Recommended.
Rotate one screen without changing the others
Windows applies display settings to the display you select. When more than one monitor is connected, select the target screen in Settings > System > Display before changing its orientation. Use Identify if you are unsure which numbered display is which.

Windows logo key + P opens projection modes such as PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. These modes choose which displays Windows uses; they do not rotate a screen. Windows logo key + Shift + Left/Right arrow moves a window between monitors. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference does not document a general screen-rotation shortcut.

The wrong monitor changed
Return to Settings > System > Display, select the intended screen, and set its orientation there. Use Identify to check the display number on each physical screen.

The image did not rotate with the monitor
Select the monitor in Display settings and choose a portrait option under Display orientation. The software setting changes how Windows presents the image; it cannot move the monitor or rotate its stand.
The image looks stretched, small, or less sharp
Choose the resolution marked Recommended for the selected display. Microsoft notes that a lower, non-native resolution can make text less sharp or make the image appear small, centered, bordered, or stretched.

The resolution changed unexpectedly
Microsoft says an unexpected resolution change may mean the graphics driver needs updating. Check for available updates at Settings > Windows Update > Check for updates. The cited Windows guidance does not provide instructions specific to individual graphics-card manufacturers.
Check whether your monitor can be positioned vertically
Windows’ display setting does not establish whether a particular monitor, stand, or mount supports portrait positioning. Check the monitor and accessory specifications before rotating or buying a mount; relevant details include monitor compatibility, weight capacity, mounting pattern, and supported rotation range.
