LangGraph vs. LangChain Agents: Which Is Better for Production Workflows?

LangChain is a practical starting point for standard tool-calling agents; LangGraph fits workflows that need explicit routing, durable state, or custom orchestration. The frameworks can be combined.

Neither is universally better for production. LangChain is the quicker starting point for a conventional model-and-tools agent loop, with prebuilt behavior, integrations, and middleware. LangGraph is the better fit when you need direct control over branching, deterministic steps, long-running state, or a custom orchestration flow. They are designed to work together: LangChain agents are built on LangGraph and can run inside a custom LangGraph workflow.

The practical decision is about the shape of the application and how much of its control flow you want to assemble yourself. A standard tool-calling loop may benefit from LangChain’s higher-level starting point; a workflow with explicit routes, fixed operations, or more demanding state requirements may benefit from LangGraph. The official materials describe intended uses and capabilities, but do not establish a universal winner on speed, cost, or reliability.

How the two frameworks differ

The key distinction is the level at which you shape the workflow. LangChain provides a higher-level agent interface; LangGraph provides lower-level orchestration primitives for building and controlling workflows. The choice is less about whether an application is “production-ready” and more about how much of its control flow should be prebuilt versus explicitly modeled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters because production workflows can contain both predictable operations and model-driven choices. In one application, the model-and-tools loop may describe nearly the whole task. In another, the agent may be only one stage in a longer process with explicit routes, human review, or state that must survive interruptions. The closer the workflow is to a standard loop, the more useful a ready-made agent may be. The more the surrounding process determines the behavior, the more valuable direct orchestration control can become.

LangChain supplies a ready-made agent loop

LangChain’s create_agent provides a core loop in which a model can call tools and use their results to produce a response. It also offers model and tool abstractions, integrations, and middleware. Middleware is the documented extension point for adding guardrails, dynamic context, human review, and business logic around the loop. For a workflow that follows this familiar pattern, this higher-level starting point can reduce assembly work. LangChain’s OSS overview describes the framework layers and middleware.

The benefit is not simply fewer lines of code; it is a starting architecture that already matches a common agent pattern. The team can focus on the tools the agent should use, the context it needs, and the application rules around its work, rather than first expressing every step as custom orchestration. Middleware offers a place to adapt that loop when the core pattern remains appropriate but needs application-specific behavior.

This makes LangChain a practical default to evaluate for a conventional request-to-tool-to-response workflow. It does not mean that every application should remain at that abstraction level. If the loop becomes hard to describe because different requests need materially different paths, that is a sign to assess whether broader workflow control is needed.

LangGraph exposes workflow orchestration

LangGraph is a lower-level orchestration framework for long-running, stateful agents. Its graph model is useful when the application must branch or route explicitly, combine deterministic operations with model-driven decisions, or preserve state through a workflow that can pause and resume. LangChain’s reference recommends LangGraph for advanced needs involving a combination of deterministic and agentic workflows, heavy customization, and carefully controlled latency. That is guidance about fit—not evidence that LangGraph is inherently faster. The LangGraph reference describes its intended scope.

“Lower-level” is a trade-off, not a synonym for better or worse. Direct control lets a team represent custom workflow logic explicitly. It also means the team has more orchestration design to consider and maintain. If the application needs that control, the extra design is purposeful; if it does not, it may add complexity without solving a real problem.

For example, a workflow that always performs a fixed operation before asking a model to select among tools combines deterministic and agentic behavior. If the route through the application itself must be explicit, that is a stronger reason to evaluate a graph than merely wanting to call a model. The choice should reflect the workflow requirements, not an assumption that the lower-level framework is automatically more suitable for every production system.

Choose based on the shape of the workflow

Start by sketching the actual production path: what triggers the workflow, which actions are fixed, where the model chooses what to do, where a person may need to intervene, and what information must survive a pause or a new conversation. Then use the closest match below.

Managed hosting and API deployment Evaluate LangSmith Deployment separately Managed deployment is a service decision distinct from choosing the agent framework.

Use the table as a way to choose what to evaluate first, not as a claim that an application can use only one layer. If you recognize both a standard agent loop and a need for broader custom workflow logic, the composition path is relevant: the agent can remain the higher-level unit inside a LangGraph workflow. Conversely, if a standard agent loop and middleware already express the requirements clearly, there is no evidence-based reason to rebuild it in a graph solely for a production label.

When LangChain is the more practical choice

Choose LangChain first when the core job is a recognizable agent loop: receive a request, let a model select among tools, return tool results to the model, and produce an answer or action. A higher-level agent lets the team concentrate on tool behavior and application requirements instead of defining every transition in the orchestration layer.

Middleware is relevant when the loop is basically right but needs application-specific controls. For example, a team may want to add a policy check, supply context based on the current request, or route a decision to a person for review. These are documented middleware use cases, rather than reasons to assume every such application needs a hand-built graph. The OSS overview covers middleware and the agent stack.

  • Prefer this path when the main workflow matches the built-in model-and-tools pattern.
  • Use middleware for supported changes around that loop, such as guardrails, dynamic context, review, and business logic.
  • Move to graph-level orchestration when the workflow’s branching, state, or deterministic steps demand more explicit control.

A useful test is whether the proposed requirement changes the behavior around the agent loop or changes the overall path the application must follow. A guardrail, dynamic context, or review step around an otherwise standard loop is within the documented middleware extension surface. If a requirement calls for explicit routing among workflow paths or for coordinating deterministic operations and model decisions, graph-level orchestration is worth evaluating.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting with LangChain does not close off the latter option. The frameworks are designed to compose, so a team can begin with the higher-level agent and use it inside a custom LangGraph workflow if the application later needs more orchestration control. That route can avoid taking on lower-level design before the workflow warrants it.

When LangGraph is the better starting point

Use LangGraph when the workflow itself—not just the model call—needs to be designed explicitly. Examples include routing between different paths, executing fixed operations before or after a model decision, or managing a task that must preserve its place and state across interruption. LangGraph’s lower-level model provides more direct control, but that control also means the team owns more of the workflow design.

Its recommendation for advanced needs that combine deterministic and agentic workflows, heavy customization, and carefully controlled latency should be read narrowly. It indicates where LangGraph is intended to be useful; it does not establish a blanket performance advantage. If latency is a key requirement, test the implementation and deployment pattern that the team plans to run instead of inferring an outcome from framework choice alone.

Before choosing this route, be specific about which behavior must be explicit. Is there a branch the application must take based on its own logic? Does the process combine fixed operations and model decisions? Must a long-running task retain state across a pause? Answers such as these describe a concrete orchestration need. “We want maximum control” on its own is less useful than identifying the particular paths, state, or customization that the team must control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LangGraph is the lower-level orchestration option and supports stateful, long-running agent workflows; official materials do not provide a quantified estimate of implementation or maintenance effort. Teams should therefore evaluate that work against the control they actually need, rather than assume it will be free or that it will necessarily be costly in every case.

How LangChain and LangGraph fit together

This is not necessarily an either-or decision. LangChain agents are built on LangGraph, and LangChain’s 1.0 announcement says teams can use LangChain agents inside custom LangGraph workflows. A team can begin with the standard agent loop and add a graph around it where explicit routing, deterministic operations, or broader workflow state are needed. The October 22, 2025 announcement describes the frameworks’ relationship and their 1.0 positioning.

That composition is a useful migration path, not a promise that every application should use both. If the agent loop already expresses the workflow clearly, a custom graph may add unnecessary design and maintenance. If a graph is needed for the overall process, placing a LangChain agent within it can preserve the higher-level agent behavior for the part that actually benefits from it.

This boundary is important when comparing the options. Choosing LangChain does not mean giving up the LangGraph runtime: the agent layer is built on it. Choosing LangGraph for custom orchestration does not require discarding LangChain’s higher-level agent pattern; the official 1.0 announcement describes using LangChain agents inside custom graphs. The architectural decision can therefore be about which layer should define the overall workflow, while retaining the other where it fits.

Understand persistence before choosing a stateful design

LangGraph’s persistence documentation distinguishes two concepts that solve different scope problems:

  • Checkpointers save snapshots of graph state, commonly associated with a thread. The documentation identifies conversation continuity, human-in-the-loop workflows, time travel, and fault tolerance as use cases.
  • Stores hold application-defined data that can persist across threads. They are for longer-lived information beyond the state of one thread.

Do not treat a checkpointer and a store as interchangeable. A thread’s saved execution state and application data shared across threads are different persistence needs. Configure the backend appropriate to the environment. LangGraph’s documentation says Agent Server handles persistence automatically; that statement applies to the Agent Server environment and should not be generalized to every deployment. See the persistence documentation for the concepts and use cases.

Make the scope of the information explicit when designing persistence. If the requirement is continuity for a particular thread or a task that may be interrupted, the checkpointer concept is relevant. If information is application-defined and needs to remain available across threads, the store concept addresses a different scope. A workflow may need to consider both; one does not replace the other simply because both involve persistence.

Persistence is also not the same decision as managed hosting. The documentation’s automatic-persistence statement is specific to Agent Server. For other environments, the team must choose and configure the appropriate backend rather than assume that the same behavior is supplied everywhere. This is a reason to assess the runtime environment alongside state requirements, while keeping that deployment assessment separate from the framework comparison.

Framework choice is separate from deployment choice

If the requirement is managed hosting or API deployment, evaluate the deployment service independently from the framework layer. LangChain’s May 14, 2025 announcement said LangGraph Platform had reached general availability and described deployment and scaling capabilities. A note on that announcement says that, as of October 2025, LangGraph Platform was renamed LangSmith Deployment. Because the name and packaging may change, check the current service documentation and terms before making a deployment decision. The announcement documents the earlier name and rename note.

The announcement does not establish current pricing, plan limits, or partner-program terms. Those details should be verified directly rather than inferred from the framework comparison.

In other words, choosing an orchestration framework does not by itself answer how the system will be hosted or exposed as an API. A team that needs managed deployment should evaluate the service as a separate product decision, including its current name, packaging, pricing, and limits. LangSmith Deployment is the current name recorded in the October 2025 note, but the note does not establish today’s detailed commercial terms.

The 2025 general-availability announcement describes deployment and scaling features and persistence for memory, conversational history, and human-in-the-loop or multi-agent workflows. Treat that as context about the announced service capabilities, not as a substitute for checking the current product documentation. The announcement’s old name is useful historical context, but presenting LangGraph Platform as the current service name without the rename note would be outdated.

What production evidence does—and does not—show

LangChain’s official materials describe production capabilities and intended use cases for both the LangChain agent layer and LangGraph runtime. They do not provide a controlled, matched-workload benchmark establishing which framework has better throughput, latency, runtime cost, or reliability. There is therefore no evidence-based numerical performance winner here, and “production-ready” is not a useful blanket distinction between them.

For a consequential choice, test the workflow your team will actually run. Keep the model and provider, tool behavior and latency, persistence backend, and deployment pattern representative of production. Measure the outcomes that matter to your service—such as completion behavior, time, and operating cost—and account for the additional implementation and maintenance work required by a lower-level design. The 1.0 announcement identifies LangChain 1.0 and LangGraph 1.0 as stable major releases as of October 22, 2025; APIs and package details can still evolve, so check current documentation before copying code into a project.

In particular, do not turn the reference’s mention of carefully controlled latency into a claim that LangGraph is faster. Nor does the fact that LangChain offers a higher-level loop prove that it is cheaper to run. Official materials contain no controlled comparison of throughput, latency, runtime cost, or reliability. They also supply no adoption statistic that would settle the choice. Any numerical claim on those points would need separate evidence.

A useful evaluation keeps the comparison matched: use a representative workflow and keep the model/provider, tools, persistence backend, and deployment pattern relevant to the production use case. Then measure the dimensions the service cares about and include the work needed to assemble and maintain each design. This will not create a universal ranking, but it can show which option meets a particular team’s requirements under its own conditions.

A practical decision sequence

  1. Describe the workflow. If it is one model-and-tools loop, start by evaluating LangChain’s create_agent. If it contains explicit routes, fixed stages, or several distinct control paths, model those requirements directly.
  2. Mark where people or policies intervene. If guardrails, dynamic context, review, or business logic can be handled around the standard loop, assess LangChain middleware. If these requirements change the broader path through the workflow, assess LangGraph orchestration.
  3. Define state scope. Decide what must be checkpointed within a thread and what application data must persist across threads. Select and configure persistence for the deployment environment.
  4. Separate runtime from hosting. Make the framework decision based on workflow needs, then evaluate managed deployment and its current product terms as a separate choice.
  5. Validate with a representative workload. Compare the implementation and operational trade-offs on your own workflow; the official materials do not provide a matched performance benchmark.

These steps also help avoid two common category mistakes. First, middleware and orchestration are not interchangeable labels: middleware extends behavior around a standard loop, while LangGraph is the lower-level choice when the workflow logic itself needs to be modeled more directly. Second, persistence, hosting, and framework selection are related but distinct decisions. A requirement for managed deployment does not by itself prove that one framework is the better fit.

Version and naming context

On October 22, 2025, LangChain announced LangChain 1.0 and LangGraph 1.0 as stable major releases. It positioned LangChain 1.0 around the core agent loop, middleware, and model integrations, and LangGraph 1.0 as the lower-level graph runtime. The announcement also describes composition between the frameworks. These are version-specific descriptions, so verify current package names, APIs, and documentation when implementing.

For deployment terminology, the May 2025 general-availability announcement used “LangGraph Platform”; its note records the October 2025 rename to “LangSmith Deployment.” Refer to the current service name when discussing present-day deployment.

Because package and API details are version-sensitive, use current documentation before lifting an example into a production project. The 1.0 announcements establish the frameworks’ positioning and stable major-release status as of October 22, 2025, but they do not guarantee that every API detail or service term will remain unchanged.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is LangGraph or LangChain better for production?

Neither is categorically better. LangChain is a practical starting point for a standard model-and-tools agent loop, while LangGraph is intended for workflows that need explicit orchestration, heavy customization, or a combination of deterministic and agentic steps. Choose based on workflow shape and state needs; the official sources do not establish a universal production winner.

When should I use LangGraph instead of LangChain?

Evaluate LangGraph when the workflow needs explicit branching or routing, deterministic operations mixed with model decisions, long-running state, or more direct control over the overall process. If the task fits a standard agent loop and needs controls around that loop, LangChain with middleware may be the simpler starting point.

Can I use LangChain agents inside a LangGraph workflow?

Yes. LangChain agents are built on LangGraph, and LangChain’s 1.0 announcement describes using LangChain agents inside custom LangGraph workflows. This lets a team use a higher-level agent where useful and graph-level orchestration for the broader workflow.

How do LangGraph checkpointers and stores differ?

Checkpointers save snapshots of graph state, commonly scoped to a thread, and support use cases such as continuity, human review, time travel, and fault tolerance. Stores hold application-defined data that can persist across threads. They serve different persistence scopes and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is LangGraph faster or cheaper than LangChain?

Official materials do not include a controlled, matched-workload benchmark for throughput, latency, runtime cost, or reliability. LangGraph’s recommendation for carefully controlled latency is guidance about fit, not proof of a speed advantage. Test the intended workflow, model/provider, tools, persistence backend, and deployment pattern to assess performance and cost.

What is LangGraph Platform called now, and what does it cost?

A LangChain announcement note says LangGraph Platform was renamed LangSmith Deployment as of October 2025. The announcement does not establish current pricing, plan limits, or partner terms, so verify the current product documentation and commercial terms before choosing managed deployment.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Start with LangChain when a prebuilt model-and-tools loop plus middleware matches the job. Start with LangGraph when the workflow needs explicit routes, deterministic steps alongside model decisions, or carefully managed long-running state. You can combine them: LangChain agents are built on LangGraph and can sit inside custom graphs. Treat deployment as a separate decision, check current product and API details, and benchmark your own representative workload rather than assuming either framework is inherently faster, cheaper, or more reliable.
