NASA’s SunRISE (Sun Radio Interferometer Space Experiment) is a planned mission of six small satellites that will work together as one radio telescope. Flying above Earth’s atmosphere, the spacecraft will map low-frequency radio bursts linked to energetic particles from the Sun, helping scientists investigate where those particles are accelerated and how they move through the Sun’s magnetic environment. NASA’s October 6, 2026 update targets launch no earlier than mid-2027 aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy.

What SunRISE is designed to find

SunRISE will observe low-frequency radio emissions associated with energetic solar particle events. These bursts are signals that scientists can use to investigate the particles’ origins and movement; the spacecraft are not described as directly sampling the particles themselves.

Energetic particles released by the Sun can pose radiation hazards to spacecraft and astronauts. By tracing radio emissions from the Sun’s outer atmosphere toward interplanetary space, scientists hope to better understand particle acceleration and the magnetic fields that influence particle travel. That knowledge may contribute to improved space-weather forecasting and assessments of radiation risk. It is a scientific mission, not a guaranteed warning service or a promise to predict every solar storm.

The distinction between the emissions and the particles matters. SunRISE measures radio signals associated with energetic-particle events, then researchers use the signals’ locations and changes over time to investigate the physical processes behind those events. It is therefore a remote-sensing mission for this particular science question, rather than an experiment that flies through the particles to take direct samples.

How six small spacecraft become one radio telescope

Each SunRISE spacecraft is a small CubeSat. Rather than relying on one large dish, the six satellites will fly in formation and combine their measurements using radio interferometry. NASA describes the spacecraft as operating within roughly 10 kilometers (6 miles) of one another. Their coordinated observations, along with information about each spacecraft’s position and timing, can be combined to create images and maps of radio emissions.

Interferometry lets separate antennas act together as a larger observing instrument. The satellites’ spacing gives the array a much larger effective aperture than any one of the small spacecraft could provide alone. As JPL Deputy Project Scientist Andrew Romero-Wolf put it: “Some missions put multiple scientific instruments on a single spacecraft, whereas we use multiple small satellites to act as a single instrument.”

That arrangement makes the formation itself part of the telescope. Each satellite records measurements from its own position; analysts can combine those observations using the spacecraft’s relative positions and timing information. The result is not simply six independent views placed side by side, but data from a coordinated array that can be processed into maps of low-frequency solar radio emissions. The wider effective aperture comes from the satellites working together, not from any one CubeSat carrying a giant dish.

The roughly 10-kilometer formation scale is a mission-design figure, not a claim that the spacecraft are rigidly attached or that they form a single physical structure. They remain separate satellites, and their locations must be known well enough for scientists to interpret the combined measurements. This distributed approach is how SunRISE turns multiple small spacecraft into one observing instrument.

Antennas that unfold in space

Each spacecraft is designed with four deployable antenna booms. JPL’s engineering description says each boom is about 2.5 meters (roughly 10 feet) long; together, they deploy in an X shape. These antennas are part of the mission’s observing design, not evidence that SunRISE has launched or begun collecting science data.

The booms are a notable contrast with the small size of the spacecraft: SunRISE relies on antennas that unfold after launch rather than a large, fixed radio dish. The four-boom X arrangement is a hardware specification from the mission’s engineering description. It should not be confused with the approximately 10-kilometer spacing between different satellites, which describes the formation as a whole.

Why SunRISE will observe from above Earth

Earth’s atmosphere blocks the low-frequency radio signals SunRISE is intended to study. The mission therefore needs to operate above the atmosphere, where its antennas can observe those emissions without that obstruction. NASA gives an approximate operating altitude of 35,000 kilometers (22,000 miles) above Earth.

The high-altitude formation is not simply a way to get a better view of the Sun: it is part of how the instrument works. The spacecraft need to observe the relevant radio signals and coordinate their measurements across the array. Their formation and position information help scientists interpret the combined data as maps of solar radio emissions.

This is why SunRISE’s orbit is closely tied to its central science goal. A ground-based observer looking through Earth’s atmosphere cannot access the low-frequency signals in the same way the mission is designed to observe them. Putting the constellation above the atmosphere allows the instruments to work with those emissions, while the distributed formation supplies the interferometric measurements. The altitude and spacing describe different parts of the design: the altitude gets the spacecraft above the blocking atmosphere, while the spacing lets them operate as a multi-spacecraft array.

What scientists hope the observations will explain

Solar radio bursts are associated with energetic particle events, but observing the bursts is not the same as directly measuring the particles. By mapping where the emissions appear and how they evolve, SunRISE can help researchers investigate where particles are accelerated and how the Sun’s magnetic environment shapes their paths. The mission is intended to study this process from the outer corona—the Sun’s outer atmosphere—out into interplanetary space.

This work matters to space-weather science because energetic particles can affect people and technology beyond Earth’s protective atmosphere. Better knowledge of how such events develop may help improve forecasts and understanding of potential radiation impacts on astronauts and spacecraft. NASA presents these as potential benefits of the research, not as a specific forecast-accuracy target or an operational protection system.

In practical terms, the mission is intended to add information about the radio signatures and evolution of events linked to solar particles. Those observations may help scientists examine where acceleration occurs and how magnetic fields shape the particles’ journeys. The mission does not promise that one image or measurement will settle every question about a solar event; its value is in adding coordinated observations to the scientific picture of how the Sun releases energetic particles into space.

SunRISE is also not presented as a conventional optical solar-imaging mission. Its defining observations are low-frequency radio emissions. Other ways of studying the Sun can focus on visible or other light, or on particles measured in place, but the information NASA provides about SunRISE does not support ranking those approaches against one another. They address different kinds of observations; SunRISE’s specific contribution is a radio interferometer operating above Earth’s atmosphere.

Launch plan, duration, and organizations

NASA’s latest listed update, dated October 6, 2026, says SunRISE is planned to launch no earlier than mid-2027 on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy from Kennedy Space Center in Florida. It is expected to share the ride with a payload sponsored by the U.S. Space Force’s Space Systems Command. This plan supersedes earlier plans to launch on a ULA Vulcan Centaur.

“No earlier than mid-2027” is a launch target, not a statement that the spacecraft have already launched or that the date is guaranteed. The ride is planned as a rideshare, meaning SunRISE is to launch alongside another payload rather than on a flight dedicated solely to this mission. NASA’s October 2026 update is the most recent launch information; older references to a 2026 launch or Vulcan Centaur describe earlier planning.

NASA describes the planned prime mission as 12 months. That is an expected mission duration, not a record of completed operations, since SunRISE remains a future mission. The prime mission period is the planned core science phase; NASA’s mission information does not state that SunRISE has already begun operating or guarantee an extended mission beyond that period.

What SunRISE will—and will not—measure

SunRISE’s defining measurement is low-frequency solar radio emission. The mission will use those emissions to study the processes and magnetic environment associated with energetic particles. It is not described as a conventional optical solar-imaging mission, nor as a spacecraft that directly collects samples of the particles. Its distinctive contribution is the use of a distributed radio array above the atmosphere to map signals that ground-based observations cannot access in the same way.

The array also should not be mistaken for six separate missions with unrelated goals. The spacecraft are designed to coordinate their observations so the measurements can be combined as one interferometer. Their positions and timing matter to that process, as does the formation in which they fly. The radio images and maps are built from the combined observations, rather than from a single satellite acting alone.

That distinction also sets expectations for the results. The observations may strengthen scientific understanding and contribute to better forecasting, but NASA’s mission descriptions do not specify a guaranteed lead time, a forecast accuracy, or a promise that a particular hazard will be prevented. SunRISE will help researchers study the science behind space weather; NASA’s mission information does not describe it as an operational warning or protection system.

Why launch information may look inconsistent

Some older SunRISE descriptions refer to a Vulcan Centaur launch or a 2026 launch plan. Those details reflect earlier planning. NASA’s July 13, 2026 update announced the move from Vulcan Centaur to Falcon Heavy, and its October 6, 2026 update gives the current target as no earlier than mid-2027. For the latest launch plan, the October update is the relevant reference.

The older and newer details can coexist in search results because mission plans changed over time. For a current summary, use the October 2026 status: a Falcon Heavy rideshare from Kennedy Space Center, with a target no earlier than mid-2027. That wording preserves the uncertainty in the published launch plan rather than treating a target date as a confirmed launch date.

Frequently asked questions

How can six small satellites act as one telescope?

They will fly in formation and use radio interferometry to combine their measurements. Their relative positions and timing information help scientists process the observations into maps of low-frequency solar radio emissions. Together, the array has a much larger effective aperture than any one of its small spacecraft.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does SunRISE directly measure solar particles?
